Soldier of Fortune is 19 years old

So I just finished replaying the original Soldier of Fortune and really enjoyed it. After all these years it remains a true classic. Crisp detailed textures despite its age, some unique locations like Iraq and Serbia, weapons that are fun to use, and the stumps-guts-bleeding gore. In 2000 you could keep cutting a dead body with knife and it would slowly disintegrate.

The second game is my favorite with great graphics that look nice even today. More gore (e.g. spurting blood in time to a heartbeat), military style weapons, and interesting locations like Colombia, a Swiss airport, and a rainy freighter. Also the AI has an uncanny knack of lobbing grenades exactly where they need to go.

Payback is an interesting example of a hit & miss game (pun intended). The weapon modeling and selection is absolutely awesome and the graphics are quite nice. Also the gore is so silly that it's pure entertainment.

But the level design is average to mediocre with frequent bad difficulty spikes and unfair checkpoints. Also the AI is generally pretty dumb. It's an OK budget title overall. No screenshot for that one as I don't have it installed.

I really liked the first two, and just loved watching all the death animations and dismemberment. Nothing like opening up with a SAW and disemboweling a group of terrorists.

I did also try Paypack, and while it had the dismemberment still, the game was just terribly mediocre so I gave up within a half hour. It was a big disappointment, a lot like Contract J.A.C.K. was after the brilliant No One Lives Forever games.

I'd love to see what a team could do with a modern engine these days.

I honestly don't remember 1 from 2, but I really enjoyed these games. At the time I was really into the military shooters, and I considered more detailed hitboxes, and detailed destruction (in this case, of the human body  ) to be the future of fpses. It's pretty morbid, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who took time shooting corpses to see how they would be affect. Now I kinda look back and think it's over the top. I still think detailed hitboxes are a really good thing, and maybe animations depending on where a character is hit.

Ironically, on the environment destruction part, which I thought was a big failing in fpses (because almost no one ever did it), I never got around to playing Red Faction: Guerilla.

Red Faction: G (AKA "space asshole") is a super fun game.

Yeah, so I've heard. :D

Also, to clarify my position on Soldier of Fortune, I remember them being absolutely solid shooters. Guns were good, and the controls were excellent. I don't remember either of them being a slog either.

I have a vague recollection of liking the first one more, so I guess I'll vote that way. Never played Payback. Another older shooter, Painkiller, I never played either. Kinda wanted to.
