Gotta say, I wasn't expecting the price that low. The math made me think it might sneak that low, I just didn't expect the price to be so close to the main model. If I had to guess, I think the idea is to make the Pro the main one to purchase from now on, but if you just can't justify the extra $100, you can still get access to the ecosystem at $300.

I was thinking of going for an old one once the price started to drop due to the new release, but the Pro at that price is a lot more attractive than I expected.

This is going to be an interesting year in gaming.

I'm not sure objectively their designs have looked particularly better or worse.

Meh. I think it looks fine.

The best you could say is it looks consistent.

It looks like a double ice cream sandwich to me... primarily because the top layer is the same material across compared to the half glossy, half matte look of the original PS4.

The slim though looks quite cheap looking. Even more so than when sony went from the original ps3 to the slim.

I prefer matte over gloss. Other than that, it looks like a black box with some angles and de-emphasized logos. I vastly prefer it to the curvy, in your face style of the PS3. It doesn't stick out, it doesn't draw attention to itself. That's perfect for me.

No. The Slim looks mostly like the original PS4 (except, of course, slimmer). The PS4 Pro basically has a whole other level to it.

I don't even own a PS4 but I have an interest in the console race - I seriously thought it was going to be a bigger price leg up.

As it is, I'm worried a lot of collectors will now feel that their console collection is a waste because of the inadequacies of a slim $100 difference. I had thought if they came out with a $600 or $800 PS4, then people would think "Oh wow...and it doesn't even look that much better unless you're on 4K? Screw it. I wouldn't have gone for it anyway." whereas anyone buying a new console, and owning a 4K TV, would have felt it's a good justification.

I see the Pro price has taught you, and many others for that matter, nothing. There is zero reason the Pro has to cost more than 399 this year, and zero reason for the Scorp to cost more next year.

Or put another way, with an entire additional year to go, why does the Scorp have to be more than 399 (stating at) to achieve it's performance goals? (sort-of-hint: stop comparing consoles to dedicated graphics solutions in PC's)

Guys its all about the 4K, its the future.. but forget about playing 4K UHD on this device. Hmm... whoever made that decision seriously cutoff the legs from this machine making it a has ran. The entire thing seems like a half baked effort on the cheap, not enough GPU power, no UHD player, etc.. If Sony was going to make a "premium" device, they have alot to learn.

IMO - the Slim is inoffensive but not really anything think is nice, or even not nice. I basically feel no way at all about it, which I find disappointing since I thought the original PS4 was a cool looking console.

However, the pro looking like a 50%-thicker version of the Slim with an extra blade... is ugly. It may still look better than the launch One, but that's not really saying much. I prefer the One S over either of new Sony consoles, in terms of hardware looks (which of course doesn't matter, but everyone pretended it mattered when Sony had the better looking console).

Sony was jealous of the attention MS was getting from not doing 1080p enough of the time, and wanted some of sweet-sweet free press. No press is bad press, right? Right? :p

The latest on the specs (via spec sheet, announcement, previous reports):

Improvements:
+ GPU to 4.2 TFlops
+ same CPU with speed bump (rumoured 1.6GHz to 2.1GHz)
+ GDDDR 5: same 8GB capacity, 1/2GB more available to devs, speed (bandwidth) bumped
+ Hard Drive for base model to 1TB
+ USB 3 (3.1 gen 1)
+ 802.11ac Wi-Fi
+ HDMI support for 4K (I assuming @ 60Hz... HDMI version not specified)

Omissions and regressions:
- no UHD Blu-ray
- no special PSVR hardware such as integrated VR processor unit
- larger size than original PS4
- power now "up to" 310W, likely explaining the increased size

Unknown:
~ SATA II or III? Doesn't matter for hard drives but SSD upgraders would benefit from SATA III

Not bad at all for the same launch price as PS4. Still a questionable upgrade for many with PS4 already with 1080p TV's... I expect devs to improve image quality and/or frame rates for 1080p on Pro but the announcement said nothing on this. People wanting a combo 4K media and gaming box for their living room will be disappointed by lack of UHD Blu-ray.

Seems like a mixed bag. I am mystified by this idea that they are touting it as a 4K box, but if you play on 1080 you actually get higher graphical fidelity in some games. So if I hook it up to a 4K TV I will actually be missing details that I would have otherwise gotten? So what is my incentive to play it on a 4K screen? it's not like it is actually rendering at 4K, it is just using some fancy scaling and anti-aliasing algorithms. Combine that with lack of a UHD optical disc drive and I don't see how Sony can really be calling this a 4K system. Sounds like it would be far better to just stick to a 1080 display, still reap the benefits of better AA, plus get some extra visual fidelity and higher frame rates.

To be honest, I don't care that much about the bump in hardware specs of the PS4. What I really want to know is:

1-The pricing of the VR headset and the related accessories.

2-How's the VR experience compare to the Vive and the Rift?

3-VR games available at launch.

4-Official release date of the PSVR devices.

That's the information I'm really looking forward to....

Ushio[/url]":39u4n4ul]All the people saying 'No UHD player' are the same guys who always say physical media is dead streaming is the future right?

I still buy DVD's and Blu-ray's but UHD just isn't going to be a success it is a shame and I will keep buying discs but physical media is on borrowed time.

Not all of us. I love physical media for movies. Everything else I have converted pretty much completely to digital downloads and streaming, but for movies there is a clear and noticeable improvement both visually and aurally with a physical disc, and I will keep buying them until they are either no longer available, or they start putting lossless audio on streaming movies.

So yes, I am shocked Sony did not include a UHD optical drive in their so called "4K" system. Looks like it will be a One S for me when I finally get a 4K TV.

The new camera supports VR. http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/201 ... /#/slide/1

Thanks for the link. But the way I read it, seems like PS VR is one of the inherited features (i.e. current model supports PS VR). Sounds like only form factor change and no functional change to me.

"The redesigned PlayStation®Camera (PS Camera)*3 inherits all the features available on the current model, including PlayStation VR (PS VR) support*5, and features a new compact cylindrical form. PS Camera includes a stand allowing users to easily adjust the angle of the PS Camera and set it up in their preferred location, such as on top of their TV or entertainment center. The new PS Camera will be available at a MSRP of 5,980 yen, $59 USD, €59 and £54*4."

I'm also appalled by the lack of UHD Blu-ray support, to me this would've been an easy purchase to justify, I have a 4K TV and a 4K Dolby Atmos compatible Denon receiver, but no UHD Blu-ray player, I was really looking forward to getting this new box to help with the PlayStation VR once my preorder ships, and also enjoy some UHD content along with Atmos decoding.

Please excuse me for asking this question, I'm not very knowledgeable in this field, but is UHD support something that can be added in the future via firmware update? Or did Sony just kill that option altogether by not supporting it out of the box?

EDIT: Spelling errors, I'm posting from my phone, thanks.

I cannot wait to see the PS4K PRO 2.0 (with 4K disc player) next fall it's going to look sweet! At least XBOX was honest about producing 3 different consoles. This is the biggest set up I have ever seen. I predict that in February they will announce their console to compete with Project Scorpio and really piss people off.
