Two great Star Trek shows revive the lost art of the gimmicky crossover episode

Regrettably, there’s a musical Strange New Worlds episode coming. I kid you not. Could we please stop with the gimmicks and rehashed plots, and just have a decent Trek series?
I cannot wait for that one. Lets try something new, if you dont enjoy the new stuff you can always go back and re-watch some of the 738 episodes of Star Trek before Discovery\Picard\Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds. :)

I've enjoyed Strange New Worlds more than I expected to, and I'm liking the way they mix and match while still staying in the "Familiar Zone".

Considering how constrained they are so that canon is followed, even if they occasionally color outside of the lines, I think they do a good job with it overall.

It's more "fun" compared to any live-action Star Trek series since TOS (even if each had moments of levity) and that's how I saw TOS back when I watched it airing for the first time in the '60's. So in this series, I'm REALLY liking what I see.

I can't say the same about some of the others.

It's actually nice to be exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new lifeforms instead of endlessly flitting around Sector 001 looking grave while encountering more and more humans... Star Trek Picard could have been titled CSI 2399 for all the investigating into human affairs they did.... (No trekking around stars for the most part so Star Trek is actually a misnomer and it takes place around 2399)

Edit to add: In retrospect, the problem with Star Trek Picard is that it focuses on the characters over everything else (and basically ignores the setting which isn't important; ie Friends etc could be set in Chicago, Boston instead of NYC and the whole show would be the same), which is fine for a full fledged drama series, but that is not classic Star Trek, which also explores the setting itself.

Just finished watching the episode and I was enjoying every minute of it. The whole concept shouldn't have worked based on how different the shows are but they blended the two expertly. They captured the quirkiness of the lower decks crew in live action.

It's a blink and you miss it moment but Boimler does his power walk and looks as absolutely ridiculous in live action as it does animated. I had to pause the episode many times I was laughing so hard.

This seems like a good place to introduce to people who don't already know about it the theory that via crossovers something like 90% of network television at one point existed entirely in the imagination of an autistic boy in the series St. Elsewhere. The link for a lot of them was Richard Belzer's Detective John Munch.

Lower Decks is a far, far better show than it has any right to be — especially if you are that Memory Alpha-reading class of fan (also hello).
If you're that Memory Alpha-reading class of fan (and also hello there...) You may find that many Lower Decks episodes absolutely must be watched at least twice -- Once to enjoy the story, and a second time to spot all the easter eggs.

In a lot of ways, it's a lover letter to classic Star Trek and fandom. Definitely worth a watch.

Looking forward to the musical episode which reminds me of the Badda-bing, Badda-bang DS9 episode which was a take on the Ocean's 11 movies. I had no idea Avery Brooks was such a good singer.
That episode was great, and harkens back to an era when shows had breather episodes. This was definitely one of those for DS9: it was in the middle of the Dominion War and right before the final arc.

One of the things I really miss in Discovery and Picard is those moments. I frankly find both of them exhausting to watch because they're always in existential crisis mode, all the time. And I blame the shorter seasons for that in that they simply lack the time to give us a breather episode.

DS9 did give us those, and they were a great chance for the audience to relax and get to know the characters when the fate of the Federation isn't at stake. I really appreciate SNW being willing to devote an episode to a light, silly tone like this. (Also I love Lower Decks so I'm pumped for this.)

Strange New Worlds is better at feeding the TOS crew nostalgia than Next Generation ever was.
I don't think that was TNG's mission. But the Scotty episode definitely was. And very memorable. And the Spock episodes were good too. TNG being the future of TOS was definitely the right thing.
DS9 did a little more with the tribble episode and bringing back the the original 3 actors to play their TOS Klingon characters.

I was surprised to see this episode had dropped almost a week early. I was getting ready for bed when I saw a notification, so plans immediately changed.
This was such a fun episode. It wove in humour and emotions and character building so well.
I'll rewatch it in the morning with my kids, who love lower decks, they'll love it.
