The Pinball Arcade is losing its classic tables; grab them while you can

Attack From Mars is maybe the only '90s title I haven't owned that I'd still like to. Something about that game is just still fun to me all this time later.

Centaur is one of the last early solid states I haven't owned that I'd like to also.

I had an Elvira and the Party Monsters, restored it from being really trashed, completely repainted the playfield and clear coated it. Ended up selling it, but I miss it sometimes. More than my Scared Stiff funny enough, I sold that too, but I was really done with it. Great game, but once you're finished with it there's not much joy in re-playing it.

That's why I picked those to recommend, but I could have named a lot more, it's a solid list of great games.

Addams Family is hands down one of the best (if not the best) pinball machine. I think I have to pick this up, I didnt even know emulation was a thing for these.

The Addams Family table on Pinball Arcade started out as a Kickstarter campaign, since they had to pay for the rights to use Raul Julia's voice (among others). It was that Kickstarter that introduced me to PA, and I've been a fan ever since.

This is really sad, and I'm glad I already own many of the affected tables. I'm willing to bet that one reason the rights holders don't want to renew is because they either a) want more money, or b) want to release their own game.

Side note: Arabian Nights is the table you get for free (or it was) when you first install the game. I wonder what they'll replace it with?

It's very popular, it sold more than any other game in the modern era. Introduced mode based gameplay to people. Still a classic, but I personally wouldn't put it in my top 10.

I remember dumping piles of quarters into the one at the comic store where I would buy MtG cards back in the day...

The multi-step rising mini-playfield and the opto gates on one of the levels are one of the most annoying things to maintain on my Dr Who table.
Yeah, the Time Expander is a pain in the butt. I've never owned a Dr Who, but I have friends who do. Everyone has had to deal with it at some point.

For those wanting some back-end details, this comes from Planetary Pinball Supply which owns the rights to the Williams, Bally, Capcom, and Atari pinball game libraries (missing any?).

This isn't entirely an issue as they have been very good about supporting the licenses and legacy machines, up to and including making all-new Medieval Madness and Attack From Mars machines (with more to come) via Chicago Gaming Company. These are arguably the best built pins out there outside of Jersey Jack too.

Also very good The Addams Family and ST:TNG. Personally I'm a big fan of Theatre of Magic in person but I don't know how it plays on a computer. I feel like not having the physicality of the big magic box in the middle might take away from the experience.

Of course the real thing is always better but if you don't have access to those classics I'd say go for it. IMO these games are 80-85% accurate in terms of ball physics and action (you can tell it's not the same). IMHO real pinball is much harder than these games but they nail the sights and sounds and like I said 'most' of the feel. If the licenses are simply being traded to another company that be a real shame. I don't think I've played a finer simulation of Pinball than what Pinball Arcade has produced. Not ever and I've played a bunch.

Their sim of Medieval Madness is one of their best. I also play Black Hole and Star Trek TNG often.

Yeah, sticky Time Expander domes and also failed detection on the dalek gates mean my multiball play doesn't contribute as much to my score as it should. I tend to lean on Sonic Booms more than I should as a result and I have no Davros waves on the high score table :-(

My table was originally German (not sure how it came to NZ) and has a somewhat varied history, apparently.

Some previous owner put a hinged metal plate on the level with the cups that sits flush with the playfield at rest and covers the little gap there. It prevents the ball sticking or deflecting as it crosses that gap, I wish the versions I'd played in arcades back in the day had had that.

Um. That's basically all tables I regularly play. These guys are ruined by this and they didn't deserve it. Will have to buy Junk Yard before I can't anymore.

Not playing as much anymore though because the new tables were a bit disappointing and I played the snot out of every table I liked already. Finished every one of them!

Centaur, firepower, Red and Ted, Whitewater, Taxi, Fish Tales, Medieval Madness, Monster Bash and Funhouse and Twilight Zone are probably my must haves on that list. I have most on my computer but I’m missing quite a few from the iOS app. The tables usually play great when you get a game going but getting the game going is hindered by a horrible UI and app that constantly forgets which tables I own.

For those owning this on Steam,
I recommend starting the game from your Library, as this should display an option to start the game in DX11. (or right click on the game in the library to select that option, in case the above doesn't work.)

Per default it will launch in DX9 mode, which doesn't look as good as the screenshots in article.

The main problem I’ve found is that, especially on a TV where the only option you’ve got is landscape, it’s very difficult to track the ball across the playfield. Multiball becomes almost entirely luck based for me. Still, I prefer playing it on console with button to the iPad port. Controller shoulder buttons feel more like flippers than tapping a screen.

The physics engine feels right and the tables generally play as I remember their physical counterparts (assuming a well maintained and clean physical table) played; even down to the timing for combo ramp shots.

Personally I’ve always thought The Addams Family table is a bit overrated. I’m more a mid 80s to mid 90s guy (which probably gives away my age quite precisely). My all time favourite is Black Knight 2000, which was the table they had in my dorm first year of university. I allocated a pinball budget as part of my extremely limited daily living expenses so getting replays was important to me.

I’m in the UK and not seen a physical pinball table in years and have had to rely on simulations going back to Pinball Hall of Fame on Wii (which shows how long FarSight have had some of these licenses). Pinball was killed here by deregulation of gambling slots which make more money and are easier to maintain. Even before that places started putting timers on the tilt sensor; nothing worse than getting a good ball going and the tilt alarm activating off after 2 minutes with no provocation.

Pinball simulation is something that could work well in VR. I know Zen have done some VR tables for Pinball FX but I’m not a fan of their designs which I’ve always felt lack the depth of the arcade tested physical machines (also, I don’t own any VR kit so can’t try the VR version). I wonder if the license is being withdrawn with the intention of selling it to a VR dev.

Edit: typo.

Wow... and to think I only discovered this game just now!

The style of those screenshots looked eerily familiar to me, so I researched it on a whim. Sure enough, the developer is FarSight - the same developer who created the older Pinball Hall of Fame titles that I QA'd back when I worked for publisher Crave Entertainment. My countless hours of testing PHOF: The Williams Collection served as my introduction to quite a few of the tables in that list.

The Williams Collection was one of my favorite games that I tested at Crave... I had no idea FarSight was still at it after all these years. Definitely gonna have to check this out before those tables are gone.

Much appreciated! I was just about to do that myself, got the iPad in front of me.

I have Seasons 1-4 and 7 (just picked up 7), and for me 1 and 4 are the best value.

PIN•BOT

Pinbot was the first pinball game I liked. I'd grown up with computer games, mostly, and up to that point had found pinball to be pretty boring. But a place where I worked had a Pinbot, and I ended up putting a ton of money into that thing. Multiball was totally new to me, and Pinbot had you loading balls up with skill shots, releasing them with a harder skill shot, and then playing them all simultaneously as long as you could. Combine that with the excellent sounds and a sense of progression, and that was a genuinely fun experience.

Multiball is no big deal anymore, but that was the first time I'd ever seen it, and I have a permanent soft spot for that table.

The Addams Family is one I've only seen via emulation, but I had a lot of fun with that one, too. Most of that list is just random words to me, but I know Pinbot and Addams Family are solid.

The bummer is that the table packs have been in Steam sales a lot, but I only ever picked up pack #1. According to their contract, they can't put the Bally/Williams tables on sale now, so now I have to decide if I want to pay full price for them. I haven't played it in a long time, but the thought of never being able to play those tables makes me want to pull the trigger on a few more table packs. Especially Addams Family. In the early 1990's the arcade at UCSD had a perfectly maintained table and I used to spend hours playing there.

Red & Ted's Road Show is really one of the most fun tables I've played from this bunch. Doesn't seem to be so high on most people's lists for reasons unknown.
The reason Road Show doesn't make it higher on lists is because it has a very linear ruleset, so it doesn't lend itself to repeated play that well, and isn't as popular with collectors as a result.

This is terrible news. I really enjoy playing Pinball Arcade on a 7" tablet. Not as much as my cab with a 46" playfield screen, proper leaf switches, a couple of relays to make it feel like you're actually flipping a flipper, all legit Williams hardware (coin doors, legs, lockdown bar, etc) and an accelerometer for reasonable simulation of bumping, but given the difference in effort involved, I'd say it makes a good substitute that still captures the overall feel of a table.

TBH, there's little discernable difference in terms of gameplay between the cab and a physical machine, at least on the tables I mostly play. However, the experience is just not the same no matter how many lights and accessories and speakers one throws at the problem. That said, if you are a high level player, the accuracy of every sim leaves something to be desired.

Looks like Bally/Williams either decided to create their own game or exclusively license their tables out to a higher bidder.

I think it's more likely Farsight is dropping the license because there's no longer enough people buying the tables to consider renewing it. These IPs are ancient so I doubt anyone is scrambling for them.
