Gerrymandering the Senate?this sociopath personally cost Americans and the U.S. economy $24 billion in 2013 by shutting down the federal government. we shouldn't have to suffer him again. thanks Texas
Trust me when I say that not all of us in Texas voted for this piece of garbage. As long as they keep gerrymandering our districts and keep changing the voting laws to suit them, they'll continue to steal their way to power.
Cruz needs to shut the hell up about content moderation. They're private companies, so legally they can moderate whatever and however they want. That still leaves them up for criticism, as Cloudflare found out earlier this week.
And this isn't to support local journalism. Local journalism is dead.... Most city newspapers and news stations are already owned by mega corps such as Gannett, a private equity frim, and Sinclair, the mega right-wing media giant, respectively.
**EDIT** OH MY GOD IF I HEAR ONE MORE REPUBLICAN WHINE ABOUT FREE SPEECH AND PRIVATE COMPANIES IM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND. ITS NOT CENSORSHIP AGAINST THE FIRST AMENDMENT IF ITS NOT THE GOVERNMENT DOING IT.

I would expect that tech workers would understand how a proxy is used to conceal one's identity. When you have a strong relationship and can influence an organization to do your bidding because you share similar beliefs then you are in fact violating the 1st amendment by proxy. It's a loop hole for the ruling elite to basically get away with 1st amendment violations as 95% of the world now uses these platforms for communication. The fact that you have such a strong emotional reaction toward anyone who feels or thinks different than you is actually pretty disturbing. Are you really going to let Trump and Biden tear this country apart to the point of civil war? I mean 20 years ago half my friends were conservatives and the other half were liberals, i supported abortion and the 2nd amendment leaving me somewhere in the middle. I fully support the idea and intention of the 1st amendment, everyone should have their voice heard as long as it is not overtly abusive or intended physical harm. It's called being reasonable; you all need to step away from insanity.. you have let Trump and Biden's propaganda lead you towards normalizing hatred. At the end of the day 90% of liberals and conservatives are overwhelmingly wonderful people. Walk away from the hate, or lose your mind to oblivion. And remember, no one is coming to help us (Americans)... it's on us. We must turn our backs on hatred, all of us. You, me, and everyone around us. Godspeed
Man, if your content can be summarized by your link title and paragraph summary, should you actually be compensated by someone indexing it?
Either you want to be searchable (allow robots.txt) or not (deny robots.txt).
'Oh but we provide a valuable service' ... really. You can monetize on your own page. Don't force the link provider to pay you, after all, obviously, you can literally tell a link provider 'don't link my page' using standardized technological means.
If people are just reading what Google and Facebook summarize from your article, how are you going to monetize your page?
If you don't want to be linked to, just deny robots.txt.

And become invisible to the internet? Seriously, when it comes to everything else, everyone knows that "exposure" doesn't pay a damn thing, but when it comes to local journalism, we're expecting them to survive on just "exposure"?

Billy Madison Movie":3h3s5qk5 said:Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

To a degree. When voters feel disenfranchised, they tend not to vote. Gerrymandering increases a sense of "what is the point of me voting, it won't count". I might be pulling out of my nether reaches, but I think there have been some studies that show the greater the level of gerrymandering, the lower the gerrymandered party's voter turn-out in those districts.
I would imagine the effect is great enough on a state level to at least drive down total vote by a percentage point or two knowing human behavior.
To a conservative, the word "censor" means any attempt by the publisher to point out that a lie is in fact, a lie.

So if a government uses a private company as an intermediary to accomplish mass censorship, all is good?
Don't slow walk into China's social credit system.
Note: The above has not yet even remotely happened in the US outside of right-wing/hallucinogen-enthusiast fantasies.a government uses a private company as an intermediary to accomplish mass censorship,
The political game aside, consolidation seems bad. If news become like under Spotify or Apple Music. Somehow they have to find a way as “small label” not by selling thru big label.
How many times has Ted Cruz set off the fire alarms in the Capitol building for being a liar with pants on fire?
I do not like that man Ted Cruz
I do not like his far-right views
I do not like his stupid chin
I do not like his smarmy grin
I do not like him with a beard
I do not like him freshly sheared
I do not like Ted Cruz at all
That man Ted Cruz can suck my balls

Ok, we can close the Internet now; you've won it.
Tough questions about resolving the root issue aside, I wish Congresscritters would get immediate, explosive diarrhea every time they falsely invoked the First Amendment to justify their skeevy maneuvers.
I feel I have to say that I wouldn't let Ted Cruz anywhere near my balls, under any circumstances.

I was sat outside a wine bar in northern England last week, and on the table next to me, alongside a number of what I will call "open-collars with blazers people", was an American who proclaimed himself to be from California.
One of his English companions asked him, after some discussion on the divided nature of the U.S, if he thought there was a candidate who could "bring America together".
He paused for a second and then uttered this:
"I think Ted Cruz could bring people together".
Needless to say, I spat my prosecco all over the floor.

Someone needs to implement this at the Capitol.

I wasn't aware there were much of any small news rooms left. I thought they were all owned by 1 or 2 companies or newspapers. Our local news paper was recently acquired by USA Today I think . I don't consume any of it because it has all become clickbait desperate for dollars and I see the need for something to be done but damned if I know what (other than start with breaking up the huge conglomerates)
I wish Cruz would spontaneously blow up. Can this guy seriously get any dumber? What idiots keep voting for this moron, or did he already take over voting in the state?
A little more relevant, really Google, Meta, et al. shouldn't be showing the content. If you want to aggregate links to different news sites with titles of articles then that should be fine. But showing content is definitely going to result in consumers not continuing to the real host site because most people have the attention span of a gnat and a few words about it is enough and they move on. Especially on phones with a small screen - they probably reads what fits on the screen and move on. Then those news sites lose page visits which could result on consumers reading more articles on said site. Then they lose all the advertising revenue they would have earned if the consumer just went to their home page in the first place.
If they want to show content from the articles, maybe they should split any advertising revenue obtained from these link aggregation pages across the organizations being linked to on the page at the time?

Spoken either like a conservative who's trying to pretend conservatives aren't as bad as they really are, or someone who really has never met a single so-called conservative in the last 20 years or so.
But, my money's on it just a conservative bullshitter who thinks they're more logical and convincing than they really are.

"Can't we all just get along? Why can't women, the browns, and the poors just keep to their place and behave?"
If you want to save journalism stop click bait, to stop click bait regulate Ads.
The world is rottening because of the Ads keeps telling lie about anything and we got educated to lie and think in a not functional way
I've had ad blockers on all my browsers for years. And I don't use Twitter or any of the other large social media applications, so sort of ad-block to the max there. I don't know if there are ad blockers available for things like Twitter, but if not perhaps someone should look at providing them.
Or, you know, just stop using that stuff in the first place. I seem to get along just fine with email and text messaging and even the occasional mailed paper letter to stay in contact with people. Sometimes even face-to-face talking. My life seems fine.
