SpaceX readies a redo of last month’s ill-fated Starship test flight

I wonder what the hold up is on Raptor 3. Is it not reliable enough yet? Is it not in full-scale production? Or are they perhaps trying to use up the existing Raptor 2s?
I believe that Raptor 3 debuts with Booster Block 2. Doesn't explain why they're not in use on Block 2 Ship, I'll grant.

Yeah, still not interested in spending time at Ars anymore...

I hope they clean up the trolling some day.
It’s not Ars Technica! It is the state of our country! Can’t you see that things are very much not normal and rapidly trending in a bad direction? Just look at what happened today with the Trump Admin and Zelensky! Elon is very much part of that.

I have a huge problem with the current state of affairs; I think Trump is the most corrupt president we've ever had, and might genuinely be in the pocket of Russia. The video today left me disgusted.

I have a problem with DOGE, I have a problem with the firings at the NOAA, I have a problem with the "explain your job or get fired" email... the list goes on.

What I don't have a problem with is SpaceX or its mission, which is the same as it ever was and is staffed by over 13,000 people who believe in that mission, and happens to have been founded by one guy who has taken a dark turn, but whose dark turn hasn't been reflected back into the company he founded.

Anyways, logging back out again and I'll check back in a few months.

When the time comes, I'll be watching it launch...
Once it clears the pad, I'll be rooting for it to have a successful staging...
I'll also cheer for the Engineers who can bring that massive booster back in one piece...
And regardless of whatever "Renamed Ocean" Starship is going to be landing in...
I'll be wishing that Elon was riding inside of it.

4 posts in and the Elon hate starts streaming in...
Guess haters are going to spew hate wherever they can
I don't spew hate everywhere, just as nazi LARPers...

I can't help it - it's what I was taught in American schools growing up - by the son of a father lost fighting in Germany and the Pacific against fascists.

Also, it's quite ok to hate on a hater - no ones does the bitter, salty, insecure middle aged man routine better than Elon.
Always playing the victim like little bitches too..

"The rocket worked perfectly except for landing on the wrong planet."

It's not the first time this particular field has been caught between the incredible achievements of engineers and researchers...and the horrible, monstrous people for whom those engineers and researchers ultimately worked.

I don't know how to be more clear - if you work at Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, Twitter, or any other Musk-owned enterprise, you are LITERALLY working for and helping to enrich an Oligarch who is unabashed openly Nazi who is doing his best to destroy American democracy and embed his businesses in the US Gov. His AI, Grok, is also a vile piece of crap and Elon is using it to automate decision making on illegal mass layoffs in the US Gov.

He also happens to be, so far, the richest guy on the planet, and he is using his wealth only to perpetuate more wealth instead of using it for any good. He doesn't operate a charity worth a damn, and does nothing to contribute any good to society.

He's literaly the embodyment of a James Bond villian.

This is abundantly clear to all of his employees. The fact that they are still working in his companies means that they support him and his decisions, which means that, as far as I am concerned, they are supporting treasonous activities and are supporting this MAGA-led coup against the US.

May all of their rockets blow up on their launchpads. I'll be cheering.

EDIT: Fix typos

I was reading the article and feeling an uncharacteristic lack of enthusiasm. Space flight is exciting and they are pushing the limit. And for a long time it's been possible to stay excited about SpaceX was doing, even while watching all the rest of Musk's properties go to hell in one way or another. But I just can't anymore. That said, I was just honestly surprised how many commenters had reached that same point.

I mean, yay, space, it's science and technology, but we're cutting half the science budget, we're crippling university research programs, we're firing weather forecasters. All so... the arrival on Mars can be a more accurate reenactment of a dystopian SF novel? It makes no sense.

It is just simply too hard to separate whats happening from whats happening.

No different from a guy in town who is helping build a better after-school center for kids - but everyone knows he gets drunk every night and beats his wife and children.
It should surprise no one that the "good" he does is far out shadowed by the disgusting.

Additionally, Starship is not being produced purely for the good of man kind. This isn't an endeavor strictly for this science and expansion into space. It is a commercial endeavor.

It's recognized that the advancements will eventually (hopefully) branch off into pursuits of science and knowledge and endeavors that are aimed simply for the good of common society - but that isn't the goal right now.

I have always loved space and always will and acknowledge that, perhaps, the majority of the technology that has lead us to where we are today have come from otherwise vile individuals and/or are the results of the weapons of war and death.

It's not about being naive - it's about having to deal with current reality.
Every space and science enthusiast wants something good to happen (for starship to work) but the end result of that is more power and more success for an individual that is, out in the open, trying to transform a democratic and free America into a South African Apartheid 2.0 (or worse).

It isn't about not wanting the good to happen, its about the bad results that come as a result of that otherwise good outcome. Net negative bad, is still bad.

Nobody on Ars or anywhere else choose to make Elon a target - he has done that to himself by his past and continued actions.
He is peronsally attacking people's liberties and the foundations of the country they're patriotic to - there will be backlash to that - and since he doesn't bother to seperate himself from his business interests in that manner, then those too are subject to balcklash.

With the takeover of the govt that has occurred, the problem is that SpaceX and it's mission are NOT the same as it ever was. They are now part of the weapons Musk and Trump are using for their personal benefit in the political arena, just look at how Starlink has been used as of late - just yesterday Musk was prattling on about replacing the Verizon contract with the FAA with his own company.

Did SpaceX staff resist Musk's meddling in starlink terminal availability to Ukraine? After Trump and Vance's shameful display today I don't doubt for a second Musk would demand it of his employees again. Has the company distanced themselves from him at any juncture? That alone is an example of his dark turn reflecting back. The man and the company are linked as long as he is the figurehead.
And at this point, employees at his venture are knowingly helping him achieve his goals. They may hate it, but at this point they need to think long and hard about what they are actually enabling. Need we point to 1930s Germany? The parallels are not lost on the majority of the world, including those of us in the states watching in horror at our own government shitshow.

I do not wish for any venture associated with or owned by Musk to have success. Neither do I for pretty much any of the multi-billionaire oligarchs now infesting the halls in Washington. I am disappointed to have reached this conclusion, as I find the space and rocket sciences incredibly impressive and absolutely have cheered on past success.

But that success is no small part of what gives him power, and that needs to end.

Sorry Spacex folks, it's past time for you to find another rocket company to take your talents to. Stop letting your work enable Musk's corruption.

So, cool stuff no matter the cost, but the cost helpfully masked by a mountain of denial. And I do mean a mountain of it. Of course, he denies it, but let me think a moment about a certain SNAFU where a certain President threatened to withhold military aid unless he got what he wanted, and then was impeached for it.

Nah, we must be making that last one up too.

Sigh... Elon has entirely killed any enthusiasm I've had for SpaceX. Which is unfortunate because there are tons of talented folks actually engineering and building their rockets and it is undeniable that they have made incredible technological progress but... it is such a terrible shame they allow Musk to claim all the credit for their accomplishments.

I will likely watch the NasaSpaceFlight coverage of the launch, and won't be hoping for it to fail, but my passion for the project is pretty much gone.

Von Braun's direct contributions to the Nazi war machine and involvement in war crimes ended up being nearly completely whitewashed by history due to his contributions to spaceflight; Perhaps Elon's legacy will end up the opposite: With his funding of spaceflight technology being marred and overshadowed by his massive contributions to MAGA, and whatever terrible things the Trump regime has already, and will surely wrought before all is said and done. All one can do is hope that Elon falls short of Von Braun when it comes to his contributions to crimes against humanity (although i fear it wont be for lack of trying).
