Having gone through latoffs multiple times, its no solace to those affected but it's almost never about an individual's capabilities. The incentives for C suites are just too screwed up towards short term operating income juicing. My sympathy for those affected, i have no doubt their skillsets will be welcomed elsewhere.

And Nokia just announced 14K in layoffs this morning, close to 20% of staff
And i have no doubts THAT's all about making sure the C-suite folks keep their multi-million bonuses.

Tech companies seem so convinced there's an impending recession it feels like they're going out of their way to make sure it happens. One sure way to get there is all these big companies doing mass layoffs to squeeze every cent they can out of the next fiscal quarter, because they all seem to believe there is no future.

I really hope search and ads get cut apart at Google, because the company needs a good shock to the system to start making good products again. It's horrendous how much of the world seems to exist solely to make as much profit as possible for Vanguard and Blackrock and the likes.

Agree 100%.

It's incredibly short sighted in a lot of cases, really throwing away the future...

Given how much of tech was predicated on a 0% interest rate and infinite growth, compared to a few years ago I have no doubt the economics at the C suite look and feel like a recession. It's astonishing the rest of the economy seems to be holding up so well.

I genuinely thought it was just algorithms.
I'm very curious to see what the effect will be. They must have been involved in curation in some way or that unnamed staff engineer wouldn't sound so alarmed.

I volunteer on Wikipedia, and Google News is a key resource in finding news stories to establish notability, for one thing. Bing News (or whatever it's called) isn't anywhere near as good.

Google News aggregator is a staple of my daily net experience. Still find it(unfortunately) the best aggregator despite a series of changes in the content spectrum and format.

Questionable sources like Hindustan Times and others that have track records of disinformation on the Ukraine War for example are regularly present on the Google News overview. Frustrating.

Evidently the tech slowdown continues. I used to get LinkedIn messages from headhunters weekly, but I haven't seen a single one now in several months. My company has already done 2 layoffs in the span of a year, and I worry that it will be a tough slog to find another job if I should get caught up in another round.

Well, TIL from your comment and others above that Google News is an aggregation site and that people visit it. I was aware that many/most people get their news from social media, and assumed Google News fed out to social media more generally. Didn't realise it was a site in itself.

The days of visiting a few trusted sources like The Guardian or New York Times is too old school? Man, I feel old. And no wonder the economic bottom has been falling out of 'proper' journalism. I know it's an added convenience to have one place to get everything from, but found Apple News weird and random and would much rather go straight to the source whenever possible. Seems like Google News is the same for some people. And the less said about MSN/Bing News or whatever MS are calling it these days, the better.

Today you learned about a website that launched 21 years ago? Okay...

I was in on the early days of gmail with an invited beta, near the turn of the millennium. I kid you not, I have only just gone to the news.google.com site for the first time in my life, as a result of this Ars story.

I was confused about this article, because didn't we just get an article stating Google was experimenting with adding a newsfeed to their homepage?

https://meincmagazine.com/gadgets/202...ews-filled-homepage-just-like-bing-and-yahoo/
It turns out the "Google Discover" newsfeed is separate from "Google News."
https://www.semrush.com/blog/how-to-optimize-for-google-discover/
Google Discover and Google News are two completely different Google products.

Google News is a news aggregator that mostly focuses on current events and recently published content.

Google Discover, on the other hand, aims to offer users content that’s relevant to their interests, regardless of the publication date

Why not use a good RSS reader app and follow the specific news sources you like and trust?
