This is an Asus tablet, Google isn't in the hardware business anymore than they have ever been. You need a bezel of at least that size on the bottom to be able to hold a tablet comfortably. The top one is likely for holding it landscape and for symmetry.

Why not simply write one complete article instead of posting a paragraph at a time as if this were a live feed ?

You did see the part where ASUS is making the hardware - right ?

Speaking from the perspective of someone whose only tablet is the original Kindle Fire (which has bezels that seem to be about an inch wide), wide bezels are a virtual necessity for a 7-inch tablet. While it seems like a waste, it allows a user with small-to-average size hands to comfortably hold it with one hand as one would hold a clipboard, or some such, without accidentally touching the screen. Smaller bezels would require either two hands, or being able to get a decent grip around the entire back of the tablet, while twisting one's wrist uncomfortably.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Xavin! I obviously must learn to type more quickly.

I wonder if Apple is planning to equip the ipad mini with a full retina resolution and an A6 or if they're going to continue their habit of selling last generation sub standard equipment as their less expensive offering.
Your statement fails - when you compare a just announce product that is not out yet - with hardware that is in excess of 8 months old.

@jackstrop -- No. Becaause I would have made the same comment in response to someone saying the same thing if a nwe iPad mini came out and being compared to 8 month old android hardware.

And it's funny how this comment got voted down for saying the exact same thing as the comment below mine (which got voted up) - one more fail point on this voting mechanism ARS. ("follow the leader" - i guess)

Your fanboy is showing.

The ipad mini is what Apple currently offers in a similar form factor. The rest was just my rhetorical question wondering what Apple's move would be. Is Apple going to cannibalize their $500+ market by giving the ipad mini similar performance to the standard version or are they going to attempt to just continue coasting in that segment on marketing strength.

I would hope so, the mini is around 9 months old now.
And the mini's specs weren't impressive to start with. Much as I personally dislike it, the screen's quality not its resolution, and the iOS ecosystem not the mini's specs, are what make it desirable to some.

Liking this new Nexus 7. The "large" bezels are also needed to house the dual speakers - the feature I most wanted. :) Now to find an excuse to hand down my current one, so I can get this new one...

I wonder if there's a Nexus 10 update coming anytime soon. Faster charging maybe? It's rather good (even if selling slowly) and that's its major weakness.

All good updates from my current Nexus 7.

-two speakers, 7 speaker now is too quiet and on the back.
-still decent bezel size to hold
-Camera on back for use as a scanner and quick photos
-MicroUSB to HDMI

But I doubt I will pick it up, seems unnecessary to upgrade year to year, despite it having 4 big improvements. Maybe if there is nothing else to get during the Holidays and I can use 7-1 for something permanent (maybe mod it on the wall in the kitchen?).

You could to something like a USB sound card, but thats not a great solution. Instead you're supposed to use wireless streaming to a chromecast device or something similar.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If we have the money coming in, we will upgrade both of our 2 year old Nexus 7's. They are terrific tablets, but a bit more speed and screen quality are great reasons to upgrade to 32gb as well. :p

Drop it 10cm. That screen did break into a thousand pieces by just looking at it from an angle. Which brings me to the question is the new one using Gorilla glass? Might need to RTFA.

I've personally experienced vertical stripe screen artifacts on 2 TF700Ts and one Nexus 7. The way I see it, either Asus or the Tegra3 is to blame.

If you're talking hard-wired, what's wrong with the audio out from the headphone jack?

The new N7 has better software and better battery life. Is this post supposed to be sarcastic?
