What are the other holes for? Perhaps a flash and laser autofocus/rangefinder. The last hole... I dunno, maybe a microphone facing the subject for a change?

Also, if they use the ARCore for 3d with two cameras (instead of two different lenses), maybe having accurate range is necessary for the requisite processing. Still, what devices would display the resulting 3d photos?

There's also the possibility that Google goes the iPhone-route and dumps fingerprint sensors entirely in favor of a face-based unlock method.
oh god i hope not.

I rather have the ability to use a non-primary finger to unlock the phone.

I dont have a non-primary face. :p

Good on you Google. All this secrecy is kind of pointless and feeds a whole industry devoted to ferreting them out - which then increases costs as you put in more security to hide this stuff.

No competitor is really in a position to radically change the arrangement of parts of their next product at this late stage anyway.

And with a multi-lense camera, fingerprint reader under the screen, and air-gestures - I'm on track to upgrade my Pixel 2 the moment the Pixel 5 drops;)

While competitors like Samsung pile more and more rear cameras onto their devices (the Galaxy S10 5G is up to four rear cameras) Google has stubbornly stuck to a single camera, choosing to focus on image quality over lens gimmicks.

When did a wide-angle lens become a "lens gimmicks"? We must warn all the photographers who've invested in multiple lenses and some are wide-angle!

Jokes aside, wide-angle lenses are a much-needed improvement for mobile photography. You can't create wide-angle photos via software (at least with any quality) and they're absolutely stunning for immersion.

This sentence is a weird balancing act: multiple lenses are gimmicks, but resisting multiple lenses is "stubborn"?

Hopefully they learned their lesson with the Pixel 3 and launch a mid-tier option on Day 1, not months afterwards.

That was the correct decision to release afterwards. Never release a cheaper option of a Flagship phone that's half the price. Unless you're Apple and all your products are expensive to begin.

i almost bought a pixel 3 until i discovered it's still only got 1 lens.

I know computational graphics has come a long way, but call me old school'ed, I still like my 2x optical lens.

This, with the the possibility that iphone probably still won't have USB-C connection this year, may make me hand in my iphone 8 for a pixel 4.

I'm not sure why this is getting downvoted, a digital zoom/cropping is simply not the same as an optical zoom. Anyone who is even basically familiar with photography knows that changing your optical zoom changes your perspective/compression/depth of field.

I like my P3 a lot, but I would like a ~50mm perspective lens on it.

Well at least it looks like it has physical buttons at least - that was one bad rumor.

I would have been more interested in the front, curious how they are doing the front camera. Not that I'm in the market (happy with my 3a), but with how many different solutions have shown up in the last year, it's certainly a feature to keep an eye on.

I don't really want more cameras in my phone. I'd rather have more phone in my phone.
what does that even mean?
Is there something "phoney" beyond making phone calls?

anything else, texting included, assumes a computer in your pocket. Which means features besides making phone calls aren't phoney.

How do you put more phone in once it makes phone calls?

edit to add: and personally, making phone calls is one of the least important features to me. Sure, I do make phone calls and answer the phone sometimes. But, I do just about everything else that the phones does more often ...

Actually, you do :D

draw two eyes on your index finger and point the side of your fist at the phone to unlock.

Obviously it could make two phone calls, one speaker on each ear. /s

Make the phone an appropriate size/shape for clear talking/listening; increase battery life and phone reception; improve phone contacts management, add encryption-over-voice as a feature, add voice recording and phone connection as audio output as features.

Those are just a few things off the top of my head.

How about some RAM this time Google?
Performance is my only concern with the Pixel phones. I loved my Pixel 2 but it was slow after six months. The issue definitely seems to be almost entirely a lack of RAM so I wholeheartedly agree with this comment. Apple need to get on the RAM train also as, while my iPhone is worlds faster than my Pixel in terms of responsiveness in general, it's running out of RAM in a noticeable way almost every time I use it.
