Which is it? This is a pretty huge difference, and would seriously impact my upgrade schedule.
It's a typo on the blog. Checking the live feed (approx 41 min mark on this CNet Video), the presenter says it has a a 2700mAh battery.":39b8i2up]I'm confused. From the liveblog, it says that

I was going to mock it, but in my pretending just now....not so convenient for unlocking, but doesn't seem so bad for Android Pay.

If you have a SDHC slot, 16gbytes are fine.
I just put a 64g card in my phone for $21. Amazing how cheap flash is these days....at least on memory cards.

Good news! There's a 32GB version of the Nexus 5X for $429.
There's always pros and cons to various phones; price is only one factor.":ld9glesi]Bad news, competing phones give you the same or better for less money.":ld9glesi]

SD is very nice but not optimal. You still end up with a space crunch from apps at 16gb even if all your media is on the card. That said, I'd love an SD card slot even on a 128gb phone. The readers cost like $2; kinda crazy not to put it there.

OnePlus One, OnePlus two, nexus 6, and at least the moto x pure has an SD slot. I'm sure there are others, but that's on the top of my head.":18m2rk2z]There's always pros and cons to various phones; price is only one factor.":18m2rk2z]Bad news, competing phones give you the same or better for less money.":18m2rk2z]

Can you give an example of a phone with 32GB that you think is a better value? The Moto X Pure offers 32GB for $449, so it's slightly more.

You've been able to put apps on SD cards for years if you wanted to, but they run terribly.":2qvkutjf]":2qvkutjf]Well this doesn't have an SD slot now does it?":2qvkutjf]":2qvkutjf]Ridiculous they're still making a 16gb phone. Doesn't Android M let you combine both internal and external storage into a single pool?
I carry my music around with me on my phone--I prefer to avoid relying on streaming services, since my signal is pretty much garbage at both home and work. I have at least 16GB worth of music at any given time, so I'd have difficulty with a 16GB phone. 32GB would probably be fine, but it would be even better if I had an SD card to work with.":3fk6cecv]":3fk6cecv]Ridiculous they're still making a 16gb phone. I have a 16GB Nexus 4 still and have yet to fill it up. I'd love to pay less for less storage.
Except there is still some part of every app, however small, that cannot move to the SD card, so eventually you run out of memory and have to start "app management", which sucks. Sure, I only use that app once a month, but I don't want to delete something else to load it once a month to use it, I just want to leave it on the phone and forget about it. This is especially frustrating when your main memory is full and your SD card has tons of available space. Bottom line: SD cards are nice, but you can never have too much main storage.":1qx4yt44]":1qx4yt44]Ridiculous they're still making a 16gb phone.
