Users who own the iPhone X will be glad to see that Gmail has been updated for that device. That means expanding the viewport to fit the new screen while respecting the sensor array, home indicator, and rounded corners.

That's English for: "Oh shit...I needed to add a new launcher image?!"

I don't think I had to do anything special for the iPhone X as long as I used a XIB or Storyboard as a launcher image. But perhaps Google rolled something completely proprietary in terms of UI just to make it more Android-y?

Do we know exactly how it works? Does Google proxy the connection to the back-end mail servers to make push notifications work, does network traffic only go directly between the app and the mail server, or is it some kind of hybrid?

(It matters a lot for folks whose employers don't trust Google with the login details for an on-site company mail server, for example.)

People still use Yahoo for mail? /s

Why not just let people use generic IMAP/POP3?
Yahoo for example doesn't have pop or imap for free, yet you can via their app or via whatever it is apps use.

Edit i used to have to pay for this many years ago, but recently iirc it was due to 2 factor authorization.

Not sure. In the past they've advertised that you can apply Google's spam protection for other providers, yet now it seems they've basically merged the old email app into it.

Not sure if I understand, but I am pretty sure that I am using Yahoo via IMAP access both on Thunderbird and K-9 Mail without paying.

I recently tried this with an Android phone. Actually the reason might have been 2 factor authorization was set, and it was easier to set it up via the app, Gmail in this case so that it could do the 2 factor check.

Its like Google went out of their way to make the wedge look ridiculous.
yeah that was my first thought as well.
Curiously I just looked up another phone to compare it with

Samsung Galaxy S8 5.8 inches, 84.8 cm2 (~83.6% screen-to-body ratio)
Apple iPhone X 5.8 inches, 84.4 cm2 (~82.9% screen-to-body ratio)

somehow samsung manage to have better screen to body ratio and they've done it without the notch, are they just masters of design or something? Hmm actually look at apple watch vs samsung gear s3 watch, perhaps they are. Though I'll never buy samsung cause of their heavy OS layer

Except the native mail app from Apple does the same thing. Same UI placed below the notch making it look elongated up top. People just need to accept that for some applications there simply won't be a layout that works or looks as good as a regular shaped screen while for others it might work better.

Apple is intentionally keeping the bezels equal on all edges, where the S8 goes all the way to sides but still has a noticeable chin. There is virtually no chin on the iphone because the OLED panel is folded around back to route the display driver electronics behind the panel instead of underneath it, where the S8 needs a small chin at the bottom to accommodate it.

Samsung makes it happen by curving the screen edges. Apple does it with the notch. Both have a distinctive hardware trick to maximize screen-to-body ratio. In both cases, forum users complain about how it deviates from the ideal screen being a flat rectangle, but in my experience, most consumers aren't upset about either.

Honest question: is Google doing anything to index the contents of what's contained within those other inboxes? Or otherwise parsing the data?

They certainly are if you turn on the "Gmailify" thing.

There's no way for them to spam block without reviewing the contents of headers and probably message bodies as well.

Whether they are doing anything else with it... The safe assumption is that they are.

Maybe they took easy street and simply poll

There isn't a single app where the notch is going to work better than a full rectangle.

You might be able to mitigate the issue, but oh my god that main image drives me nuts.

That notch looks so dumb. I can't get over it. It's ruined Apple's legacy of good design.

It's the worst design flaw to ever exist in relation to phone screens.

Seriously folks, if you think putting a notch over top of a portion of video content, BLOCKING IT, is anything but pure shit design, please excuse yourselves from any future discussion of anything related to design.

Jony Ive, if you're going to copy Deiter Rams, AT LEAST develop a comprehensive understanding of the basic design rules he laid out.

Okay. I mean, there were two options:

1. The camera has to exist somewhere, so make the whole top of the screen part of a larger bezel.
Pros: no stupid notch.
Cons: wasted screen real estate.

2. Implement the stupid notch.
Pros: you get some extra usable screen real estate, can devote that to things like battery indicator and signal strength.
Cons: it looks f****** stupid.

I get your argument, but this might be one of those rare cases with Apple where function trumped form. Personally, I don't love how the thing looks but those indicators have to go somewhere - so maximizing the screen in the way they did wasn't the worst design. Functionally, it gives your more screen with which to use.

We know you are correct because I have had a free yahoo mail account since the mid 90’s. It is now my garbage email for spam sites, but it is free nonetheless.

Given Samsung's higher screen to body ratio I'm not really buying that it'd be wasted real estate.

Why do I need to use space for an app (Gmail) that does the same as a built-in app on the iPhone? The differences between the two are minimal.

For me, the only reason I ever used the Gmail app was when I needed to search for an older post. Now I just use the built in client and when I need to search, I use the web page.

Wait, really? Wow...I thought I remember them having POP3 quite a while ago for free.

They use the rounded borders of the screen as well to display. This leads to highly distorted edges. While the screen continues all the way to the borders Apple only uses the flat part of the screen.

I really wish Google would rework how labels are displayed in the app. On webmail, labels and sub-labels are displayed in a hierarchical fashion. On the app, they display as a long list where it will look like "label/sub-label", which can be quite unreadable... especially since it will abbreviate the long, concatenated names.

The notch is far from perfect, but I'll take it over the curved screens of Samsung devices. After playing with an S8 for a while, I really disliked how it looked, how it distorted parts of what is on the display, and how it felt. The dislike was progressive, the longer I used it. The notch, though, disappeared for me within 30 seconds.

I have no doubt there are those with polar opposite experiences.
