Facebook integration rumored for iPhone OS 4

What's more surprising: that Apple hasn't added Facebook integration yet, or that it would take time out of the WWDC keynote to make such an announcement?

This is even better than when my iPaq worked with Friendster!

...seriously: what happens when Facebook gets superceded?

I hope it's more of an "here's an API to sync contacts, and Facebook has implemented it" instead of the alternative.

Exactly. "Now Facebook knows who you call, where you are, what you're listening to, and whether your last run was 4 miles or 8. And they're giving it all to the developer of Farmville."

Software update is your friend :p
Facebook is integrated in iPhoto and Aperture, so it's not foolish to believe Apple would add a Facebook pane in preferences. I won't use it, even if I have a FB accound, but, well, FB is THE big website right now, so it makes sense. It'll just be thrown away in a few years when "website X" takes its place, and on and on. Except if FB manages to do what Google did of course... Holly crap.

Smells like BS to me. I mean, the company line is that Apple does not want to be dependent on other companies (or have their developers be dependent on other companies), why would they include built in support for Facebook?

The YouTube app is laughing at you.

Well, that's a bit different than integrating Facebook-specific API's into the OS.

Facebook, in my book, has just become malware. Some privacy-whoring, POS application that's invading every nook of the net.

I can't believe Apple would allow anything beyond an app.

So my fingers are crossed that this is and remains unsubstantiated rumor. Because I still can use my Windows computers. Haven't completely Macced out.

Because the real non-techy (and unfortunately sometimes clueless) users want it?

And most non-techy also want Flash. It's a freaking nuisance with a ton of baggage I don't think Apple would want to be a part of. I hope not at least. What would Apple gain from this? I just don't see it.

Bah, non-techy don't care about Flash. They want internet videos which are increasingly provided by Apple's video app and they want games which are provided by the Apple Store (besides existing flash games do not really work on a multitouch device anyway since they either require a mouse with move over or a keyboard.)

The competitive advantage of Android etc. for using flash is very spurious. Doesn't make Apple's approach any better.

like FB. I don't put there the sensitive informations, and the rest of my life is free for everyone to see. My self-esteem is high enough so that I don't have to lurk in the shadows

more or less agreed. I like some privacy anyway but you still have the necessary tools to keep most people from accessing your account unless they really want to and I just do not put anything into facebook that I couldn't defend before my boss. I think some drunken pics that for example are put in by friends are ok.

A friend putting up a questionable foto is different from you doing it for everyone to see because the latter tells people that you do not have a lot of common sense. And everyone has a private life hopefully.

I was just reconfiguring an old Airport base station (one of the UFOs) and came across another legacy that Apple somehow bought into - the built-in AOL dialup setting. And anyone who reinstalls OS 10.4.x these days on an older Mac will see the initial iTunes support for the Motorola ROKR phone.

Granted, these are obsolete products, but the vestiges of past marketing decisions are still there.

How do you figure?

Apple controls the integration of YouTube in the iPhone OS, what features the app has, etc.

The same is true for the Facebook integration. Apple creates the API, and has full control over what is there and isn't.

It's very much different from allowing a 3rd party, intemediary framework like Flash.

Until now I liked everything about the iPhone OS4 ... this is the first new feature that I don't like. But hey - as long as I'm not required to recreate my FB account (which I deleted last week) in order to use any other features on the OS4, I'm fine with it and just ignore it. Hope they also add a feature that I can hide/uninstall apps that came with the OS - really annoying to have those build in apps that can't be removed. At least I can create now a folder and move everything unwanted in there.

Facebook seems to be headed for a nasty collision with the Feds, the educated classes, or the entire world; and it's certainly not a quality brand.
I cannot see how it would be in Apple's advantage to tie itself closely to such a disaster waiting to happen --- way too much downside, very little upside. Leave that to third parties, so you can pull the plug if necessary without Apple looking bad.
