ChatGPT won’t talk dirty any time soon as sexy mode turns off investors, report says

They are willing to give people bullet wounds, but not boners? That red line is awfully flexible and not very line-shaped.

Following backlash, OpenAI won’t be rolling out an erotic version of ChatGPT any time soon.

According to the Financial Times, the controversial plan has been shelved “indefinitely” as OpenAI “refocuses” its attention on “core products.”
It is technically and literally true that it is following backlash, but don't make the mistake of reading that it is because of backlash.

It's because the company is financially--pardon the on-topic euphemism--boned.

It's really scary how accurate this was.
Our sense of morality is so skewed online. I sign in to Youtube or major news websites and see gifs of missile and drone strikes. Without any choice. Just murder immediately.

But oh boy... You better create a whole new language with words like 'unalive' and 'grape' so advertisers don't get upset about us reporting and recording crimes.

I think that spending $10 to recoup $1 is a higher business risk for OpenAI than the lawsuits, but as I am not an accountant I could be misunderstanding this. However, I do take the deprioritization of porn as more a sign of the end of times, rather than of corporate responsibility spontaneously arising out of the void.

This has nothing to do with benefitting humanity and everything with realising that consumer AI isn’t a viable business case.
With the potential liability they've already flagged, and now with social media companies being held liable, the revenue wasn't going to be worth it.

It's so much simpler to peddle AI to businesses and when someone complains about poor outcomes, you just explain it away by saying it wasn't implemented correctly like every business software that's touted as being transformative.

It was also hard to keep illegal behavior out of outputs, like bestiality and incest, when using datasets that included sexual content, sources said.
Not American. But fictional (text) descriptions of incest and bestiality fall within the first amendment protections or no? I'm not clear on this, but the "illegal "behavior"" comment seemed like an overstatement.

Isn't ai girlfriends and such still growing?

Some even come with creepy holograms and such...

As much as I am glad to see a reduction in slop, I am surprised to hear they will be letting others make money in that field.
Possibly, but it's a market that's probably best left to a small company running in a remote country that can more easily avoid lawsuits.

On YouTube you can eventually train it not to show stuff like that if you just persist in flagging all such content as something you don't like. It must have taken me a couple of years, but these days YouTube pretty consistently only displays stuff related to my interest.

As for major news sites...well, I decided already over a decade ago that those just aren't good for my mental health and made the conscious decision to just not read or watch general news at all. One of the best decisions in my life.

I need to watch the news. I feel like it's important to act as a witness to what is happening. Especially the things that are done in my name.
I would perhaps just like us to go back to not having unsolicited murder footage on our feeds. This stuff used to have warnings or be kept to certain times of the evening.

My main issue is the double standards though. The fake puritanism and moral outrage that always seems to be directly and blatantly performative.

Online porn seems to be one of the few areas online where you can actually get people to pay real money (albeit with a higher chargeback rate than other content verticals). For a company that's as morally bankrupt and hemorrhaging cash faster than a blast furnace could burn it all, you'd think this is an area OpenAI could actually find some possibility of profit.

I guess Americans are still more afraid of nipples than bullets.

Depictions of those generally fall into the obscenity exclusion and can be legislated.

That really does need to be stressed. Microsoft's Copilot. Google's Gemini. Amazon's... whatever. Know what all of those have in common?

They're subsidized by profitable products.

OpenAI has no other products; they're just AI. And everyone is finally starting to realize that "just AI" isn't good enough. The money just isn't there.

OpenAI, and their investors, made a bet that AGI was right around the corner and whoever managed to achieve that would basically win technology. That bet has not paid off, and they have nothing else to prop up their costly AI research and data centers with.

It's not just that OpenAI is rethinking going into porn for ethical reasons. They can't do it. They don't have the money. That's why they ditched Sora; it was unprofitable at a time when investors are really wanting the company to stop setting billions of dollars on fire every month.

Don't you hate it when a story teaches you about your faith in humanity in the same way that a broken parachute teaches you about the importance of safety procedures?

I would have assumed that the reason for ending the experiment was that no one would want this. I still strongly suspect that this is the reason, but I did not want to have to consider how this would affect people who sought it out.

At the same time, if this massive IT investment isn't capable of porn, I don't see how it can possibly be worth this investment. I have seen videos of vacuum tube computers fed from punchcards or magnetic tape, that were capable of running adult software. I feel like this is a hard-and-fast (pun completely unintended I swear!) rule for the adoption of computer technology: it must have adult use-cases.

See also: consumer VCRs, what if porn studios had used Betamax?

While people will pay money for GenAI porn, they won't pay enough money to cover the costs of OpenAI to develop and produce those AI models. GenAI porn companies tend to be, like most porn companies, run on a shoestring budget. They don't attract the best programmers because they can't afford to pay them that much.

It's not about the bad press; it's all about the bottom line.

“Staff began questioning whether sexy ChatGPT aligned with OpenAI’s mission to make AI that benefits humanity.”

What benefits are those? Funnelling yet more wealth to a small number of people whilst doing their level best to make the rest of us ever more dependent on their largesse?

Killing creativity, not caring as more and more people outsource their critical thinking and information finding to flawed electronic oracles?

Spouting forth about 20% of the working population losing their jobs, without any noticeable signs of concern?

Playing economic Russian Roulette on a grand scale? Being the first to come begging for a handout when the loaded chamber comes around because they’re too big and too important to fail?

Fuck AI and fuck the arrogant, utterly out-of-touch Silicon Valley mob pushing it on everyone.

Oh yeah, and turning back to the article for a second, I don’t believe their pious claptrap about porn not aligning with their mission for a second. They couldn’t make it work without a risk of getting sued, and their investors were getting nervous. Money talks. End of story.

The kinds of people that need online adult AI 'companions' are not usually cash rich.
