Reports are everywhere that Apple is dropping iPhone screen protectors from its retail stores. We called around and they're still available—for now.

No more screen protectors for the iPhone in Apple Stores.

My world lies in ruins, shattered; my heart, just a black stone in my chest which has stopped beating.

I am stunned, outraged; I´m looking for the right words, yet I am unable to find them; and I don´t know where to go from here.

If I buy a 10-year subscription to Ars right now, will I get all the additional informations about this enormously meaningful topic as they become known?

I'm onto my second iPhone, and I've never used a case or screen protector for either of them.

The first phone is still around, I'm an iPhone dev, so after using the first one for a year or so, I picked up the 3GS as a replacement, and put the 3G as my devel phone. Both of them look scuffed on the back, but the screens are almost immaculate. 1 small scratch on the front of the 3GS, that no one can find if the screen is on.

Screen protectors even when applied properly always seem to put little distortions on the screen, and if applied badly wind up with dust and crap trapped under that makes them even worse than not having them.

"Don't worry—you can get the exact same thing for your iPhone from places like Best Buy, Fry's, and almost any other outlet that sells iPhone accessories."

Thanks, this caused much distress to me.

But thanks to you I now know I can purchase assecories for my iPhone outside an Apple store.

This is the hardcore journalism I expect from Ars.

i personally love the anti-glare screen cover. great for cutting out glare, and also has the added benefit of not attracting finger prints as easily. Had the cover on my 1G iPhone, and have one on my 3Gs. My wife, brother, and sister-in-law all have the anti-glare cover as well.

as for being hard to put on...only if you are incompetent off with the dexterity of a kid wearing a grownup baseball glove on both hands.

Much to the horror of everyone around me, I skipped on the $20(CAD) screen protector for my iPod Touch and just make sure I never put it into the same pocket as my keys.

I also never got a case for it, and the shiny back has gotten scratched to hell, but that's partially because I like to place it on tables in restaurants and bars and spin it around. Front glass is still scratch free!

It's not about scratches at all. But my iPhone screen has a small chink from a hard fall (it's glass, after all), and that's when I decided to install a full body <a href='zagg.com">InvisibleShield. Bonus: Far less visible fingerprints, better grip. no scratches on the back or sides of the device. And the tough skin takes up most of the strain when the device is mistreated. Cons: Touch sensitivity is slightly reduced.

I would never use one of the lesser plastic film products, however. Not worth the effort or money.

(hope this doesn't come out as a double post).

Much to the horror of everyone around me, I skipped the $20.00 (CAD) screen protector for my iPod Touch. I just make sure I never put it into a pocket occupied by keys / other metal objects.

I also skipped on buying any sort of case, and the chrome back has gotten scratched badly, but that's partially to my habit of placing in on a bar/restaurant table and spinning it around. But hey, the front touch-happy glass is still scratch free!

I keep my iphone in my pocket, along with a pen, earbuds, and various receipts from credit card purchases throughout the week. I've dropped it 3 times of more than 3 feet, and many other times of a foot or less. I never leave anywhere without my phone. I've had my phone more than a year, and there aren't any scratches on the screen at all. What the heck are you doing to it Aurich?

+1 on anti glare screen protectors

Even with a thick rubber case I've managed to put a couple of cracks in the back of my 3G
one from the base up and the other from the chip in the headphone socket.
But the case has certainly stopped me from completely destroying it, including bouncing on ceramic floors and cement and insulating it from HV.

Almost time for a new one, hopefully a new model in July + iphone OS 4

Looking forward to hopefully a proper directory structure so different apps can access the same files
(ebooks etc)

I wish my iPhone 3G was so impervious like people say, I take care of mine, don't drop it, don't carry it with keys etc, and the screen it scratched to shit. Like deep gouges that will catch your fingernail. :(
That is crazy. Even with a key it's fairly hard to scratch the screens--they are glass and not plastic, after all.

I dropped my ipod touch, and the screen is smashed. Totally spidered and cracked, looks like it will fall apart any second. But I put a screen protector over it, and it's been working perfectly for the last year since. The screen protector holds the broken pieces together well enough, and the capacitive sensor still works perfectly.

So they're useful for something.

When I first bought my iPhone I also bought a nice new cover that included a protective cover. But I soon discovered that my iPhone must be defective because sometimes it worked perfectly, sometimes it didn’t detect when I was holding it to my face so it would “face-dial”, and sometimes it just refused to respond to touch of any kind.

I was just about ready to call Apple Care when I thought I’d try an experiment, and I left the phone in the case ... I just took the protective cover off the face.

It has worked perfectly ever since and I now avoid protective covers on the face of the phone.

I think Apple has been having to deal with too many trouble calls that are directly attributable to protective covers interfering with the operation of the phone. I suspect that the plastic cover has a tendency to acquire a static charge that fools the touch sensor into giving false positive, and false negative, results. And since it would be bad manners to put out a black-list of offending protectors, and then have the legal hassle of proving why a particular vendor is on the list while another vendor is not on the list ... it’s just easier all around to simply ban them on basic principle, and let the owner that wants to use one take the responsibility when their phone misbehaves due to the protector causing problems.

Otterbox Defender. That is all.
http://www.otterbox.com/iphone-cases/ip ... nder-case/

I got one for $25 (yay for corporate discounts) and it is amazing. I feel like nothing short of getting run over by a car will hurt my iPhone. Sure, it adds a lot of bulk, but it beats paying $25 for a really thin silicone cover that doesn't do anything.

Ehh, I see these a lot, and while I'm sure they're lifesavers for some people, I'm really gentle with my phones. They always get their own jeans or coat pocket, and they never get dropped. As such, I've got one of the Power Support Air Jacket clip cases on mine; it essentially covers the back but leaves the whole screen, bezel, and metal rim exposed. I like to see the design of the phone, not the lumpy turdishness of the case.

TLDR: everyone has his own sweet spot where protection and practicality meet.

This is news?

And the Ars staff wonder why people think they pay way too much attention to anything Apple does. Can't think why.

The Apple writer writes about Apple stuff. The Microsoft guy writes about that stuff. The science guy writes about science stuff. I don't see the problem.

Rumous say Apple MIGHT stop selling an unimportant accessory item at their stores, but it is still available from a dozen other manufacturers at tens of thousands of stores and places on the internet.

How in any way is that newsworthy enough to post on the front page of Ars?

Only a fanatical Apple fanboy would defend that, or post it. It's flat out ridiculous catering to Apple nonsense like this.

I don't get them to protect my screen, but the matte-finish anti-glare "protector" is far and away the best purchase of any accessory that I've made for my iPhone.

Regardless of what Apple chooses to do in the future, I'll always have a matte-finish cover on my screen (the "power support" ones are very nice, highly recommended).
