You joke, but let's not forget that the TV show was called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in the UK for _years_. It was only fairly recently allowed to be called Ninja Turtles. Due to violent connotations of the word 'ninja', I think...

How exactly is Apple replacing the gun with a water gun considered "doom and gloom"? That seems like some really weird wording in the article.

Also, the ambiguity this introduces is a little bit icky.
What it effectively means is that if I use my iPhone to text someone a playful emoji of a water pistol, what they might *see* is something a bit more threatening. Could become a problem in some cases.

Ok then, seriously:

This is a lot like the O.E.D. removing some word and some group calling that a victory...

Or, it is like how the Germans outlawed the Swastika and so skinheads just fly the Flag of the Confederate States...

I'm pretty sure the "doom and gloom" refers to the gun violence in the US, rather than Apple's decision to replace an emoji with a water pistol.

And not gun violence anywhere else, or just guns and war in general?

The terrible with this kind of thing is that life is a bit icky and a sanitising it to make it more 'safe' attempts to make it harder to address difficult issues in an adult way. I know we are being infantalised by our new media lords and masters but we shouldn't take it so readily.

Nobody got hurt by a gun emoji after all. Or a little bomb...

I must confess my Sumerian is quite limited, so I headed to Wikipedia to gain some insight:

Sumerian is a split ergative language. It behaves as a nominative–accusative language in the 1st and 2nd person of present-future tense/incompletive aspect (aka marû-conjugation), but as ergative–absolutive in most other forms of the indicative mood.

It really cleared things up.

The cross-platform ambiguity is indeed a valid point. Interestingly, Microsoft has, in fact, just (in the Anniversary Update) replaced the laser gun with a pistol.

A group called New Yorkers Against Gun Violence are claiming the change as a victory for their campaign, having lobbied Apple heavily to remove the pistol symbol “as a symbolic gesture to limit gun accessibility.” A representative for the charity told CNN: “Apple has stood up to the bullying tactics of the NRA and gun industry by showing that there are many more life-affirming ways to express oneself than with a gun.”

Yes, congrats on your enormous victory getting weapons off of people's phones. /s

Seriously, politics and PC are so far off the reservation that if they get any farther away from reality, they'll have passed the furthest point of the globe and be coming back again.

I just learned this minute, that apparently, it differs, depending on where you're from. So it could be a pistol, a revolver, or both.

Really ?

Shouldn't people be more concerned about REAL guns instead of this Politically correct BS ?

We're becoming more like the Muslim extremists who freak out about depictions of Mohamed ..

"YOU CAN'T SHOW GUNS IN PICTURES!! - YOU HORRIBLE COMPANY!"

I'm either becoming really old and bitter, or the world is becoming a truly increasingly sh*t place.

I'm curious about a possible scenario.
Child A has an iPhone and wants to have a water fight with their friend, child B, and so sends a message telling them they're going to squirt them with their water pistol.

Child B receives a text saying something like "I'm going to get you good this time", but sees a picture of a handgun, instead of a water pistol.

Changing the emoji on one device doesn't mean everyone sees it!

And if child A is a person of color then they'll be lucky to survive the onset of the SWAT team.

It does? I had no idea! I thought it was revolver when you had a revolving cylinder delivering bullets. A pistol was pretty much everything else.

I avoid using emoji in cross-platform situations for this reason. I'd rather use an ASCII smiley than have to guess at what the emoji is going to look like on the receiving end.

I understand your sentiment, I used to think the same.

But since my mother (59) and my sister (42) have gotten WhatsApp, I found an appreciation for emoji. These two have missed out on social networking before and are using WhatsApp like the generation before them used Facebook: they document their lives. But Facebook is not direct communication, you see someone's photo of their food, roll your eyes and move on. On WhatsApp, they expect a response. But how do you respond to your daily dose of random?
Today, my mom send me a picture of a cat that sat on the porch swing. Yesterday it was a picture of the sun going down.
I'm literally at a loss for words and responses like "Neat." or "That's nice." were acquiring an increasingly passive-aggressive tone.
Emoji have been a godsend to me. They really soften the harshness of short answers.

Not everyone delineates them like that. In fact, most people just consider a revolver a type of pistol, and handgun as synonymous with pistol.

That right there is the problem with them IMO. They need a built in real time translator that suggest emoji as you type.
