A dangerous E. coli strain has emerged; a small mutation may explain its rise

And how was this allowed to be published given the CDC's restrictions on publishing, and especially since RFKJ doesn't believe in infectious diseases and genetics?

/s (should not be necessary, but...)

This was probably in the publication pipeline before Kennedy showed up to screw the pooch. So we can blame this on DOGE, they were supposed to purge the CDC of such woke nonsense. Apparently they are inefficient.

Do we have a video (schematic or real microscopy) anywhere of bacteria battling cells using syringes? I found this basic animation about how P. syringae infect plants but no clear syringe action... I'm just fascinated by the weird and wonderful world of molecular technology that single-celled organisms have evolved.

So, what's the actual solution here from a food safety perspective?
It's never a question of safe versus unsafe--it's always how much risk we're willing to tolerate in pursuit of producing A megatons of food product B at a price of C, resulting in D dollars of productivity lost and E deaths.

As that calculus changes from year to year, Frosty Grin's wisecrack is predictive.

Gamma-ray sterilisation?

Some sort of ionizing radiation, at least. You can have anything you want, as long as you're willing to pay for it, and food irradiation is surprisingly cheap--maybe $.01-$.20/lb, depending on dose. But with STEC killing under a hundred USAens per year, even the prospect of that number doubling is unlikely to result in a regulatory change.

The fact that this seems new or novel is based on the public presumption that evolution finished when we were created. This biblical view still pervades our world view. Sadly, this world view will continue to result in deaths that are preventable. Maybe this level of human stupidity is nature's way of making up for the advances of civilization. It is an arms race in nature that never stops. H.G. Wells understood it when he wrote War of the Worlds in 1897 because Wells understood Origin of the Species.
Nice rant, but how the heck do you get there from the article?? And who is this "our" you refer to?

Like, the headline is almost literally "New E.coli strain evolves"

Not to worry, if you ingest bleach, feed cod liver oil to your cows, drink their raw milk and then swim in sewage, RFK Jr. will almost guarantee that you may survive, and that is a risk that he is willing to take. Just stay away from all vaccines, since they are the real killers!
