Could a vaccine prevent dementia? Shingles shot data only getting stronger.

I had chicken pox twice, one very mild case at 3 years old that my parents did notice, then a much worse case at 19 years old. It's possible you have been exposed but had a mild response. If you're young enough to have gotten the chicken pox vaccine, then you may be all clear.

This flu season looks grim as H3N2 emerges with mutations

I usually get both (different arms) but this year my main clinic didn't offer Covid shots while they figured out what to do about the "guidance" from roadkill-eating worms-for-brains, so I got flu and pneumonia shots on the same day, and then the Pfizer Covid shot from CVS a few weeks later...

Tesla’s robotaxi test: Three crashes in only 7,000 miles

From my very small sample size of two trips in Waymo in San Francisco, here are my observations: It keeps track of everything very well, and shows you on the screen other cars, pedestrians, bike, motorcycles, etc. Other Waymo cars get a white rectangle. It drives like everyone should but...

    RFK Jr’s anti-vaccine delusions—not science—steer CDC now, ex-director testifies

The press release holds no punches against the morons-in-charge. The good kind of "States Rights": https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/09/17/following-trumps-politicization-of-cdc-west-coast-states-issue-unified-vaccine-recommendations-california-breaks-from-future-federal-guidance-with-new-law/

Pfizer reports positive COVID shot results despite government-fueled chaos

For my 58th birthday this past July, I decided to "bike my age in miles" but overshot, biking 63 miles. I'm going to claim "Physical inactivity" too! That, and I'm still an "active" cancer patient, in that it's been less than 5 years since my metastatic tumor was removed (late December 2020)...

Man fails to take his medicine—the flesh starts rotting off his leg

Many years ago, I worked at the Stanford School of Medicine's computer and AV lab. How many years ago? Think VHS tapes, a laserdisc player controlled by HyperCard, and daisy-chained thin ethernet for the workstations. Anyway, the med students kept insisting that I watch the parasitology video...

Kia hasn’t forgotten the small electric sedan: We try the 2026 EV4

The EV3 is the "more cargo room" similar sized (same "guts"? I think so but am not sure) Kia car. I guess they call it a "crossover" now, instead of a small wagon, or hatchback.

Bicycle bling: All the accessories you’ll need for your new e-bike

Regarding the tire pressure, I've been using Rene Herse tires, and their pressure calculator, for a few years now: https://www.renehersecycles.com/tire-pressure-calculator/ The tires are very expensive, but very nice (I also use their TPU tubes on one bike, also nice, also very expensive). The...

CT scans could cause 5% of cancers, study finds; experts note uncertainty

I had colon cancer in 2017 that was discovered by CT scan (complete bowel obstruction! Fun!) and have had about 14 total CT scans. I’ve asked my oncology team about MRI instead, and it just doesn’t work for discovering metastasis, at least for my type of cancer. A CT scan in 2020 discovered a...

A bonus from the shingles vaccine: Dementia protection?

Shingrix has only been widely available in the US at least since 2018, so there won't be enough people to study yet. How do I know? In 2017 I turned 50, but was going through chemo, so couldn't get the live attenuated vaccine. In 2018, supplies were so short of Shingrix that it was being offered...
