What happened today that you liked?

Had my tree guy out today to look at removing some vegetation growing into the power line to the house. Despite the nature of the work he came in way under my budget and offered to clean up a few other problem areas as well. Damn, it's nice to have a "guy" who knows his shit and that you can...

Public transit, how many have you ridden?

I've only been on two subways - the London Tube, and the Tandy Center Subway. The latter was awesome as it made parking downtown a breeze. Other public transit I've taken includes the TRE locally, and the London Tube, British Rail, and a train in Denmark from Copenhagen to Skodsborg while on...

What happened today that you liked?

I've been running some variant of Windows Home Server since 2010 (WHSv1 in 2010, WHS 2011 in 2012, WSE 2012 in 2014, WSE 2016 in 2021). As Microsoft has neutered more current versions and will deprecate WSE 2016 in January 2027, I've been moving to other products, namely Veeam B&R for backups...

In this episode of 'Things That Piss Me Off'.........

Fucking Gmail. I have a bunch of older apps that don't work with modern Gmail OAuth. On Friday I reset my Gmail password out of precaution after getting some spam and a few unsolicited SMS codes to sites I've never visited. Apparently, resetting that password deleted all of my existing app...

    The true meaning of FIRE.

We get the week between Christmas and New Year's off, and it typically works out to where I can take a few extra vacation days to make it a full two weeks. This year we had two full weeks off, and I took an extra week as well. By the end of the second week I was noticeably more relaxed.

What happened today that you liked?

Over the last two weeks I've made good progress hacking down my backyard landscaping in an attempt to tame the jungle. Mini-chainsaw FTW! At work we finally hired a guy to replace the one that got fired in August. He was nervous during the final interview and I had my doubts, but he's hit the...

    The true meaning of FIRE.

I am very fortunate to have an uber-stable job - I've been with the same employer for almost 27 years fulltime (actually over 30 total as I started here when I was a Uni student). If I didn't have that stability I'd definitely be in much worse mental shape. According to several calculators I...

    The true meaning of FIRE.

I wish FIRE was an option, but I can't afford to go without medical insurance, and employer coverage is the cheapest option so I'm chained to my job for the next ~16 years until I can get Medicare (assuming it exists by then).

Oh, you've met my neighbors? If it's not the diesel F250 dually that doesn't fit in the driveway so they spread gravel down beside it to "extend" the parking space, it's the straight-piped shitty 90s pickup with the racing stripe and bumper hanging off that they remote start and leave idling for...

How do we not have a dedicated Lego thread yet?

I considered the Sushi Restaurant but it's a fairly big set space-wise, and my experiences with Bricklink sets have been mostly subpar (typically poor design and/or fragile sets). The lack of physical instructions is a turnoff as well. BDP seems to be a dumping ground for...

How old is your car / cars?

I have a 2023 CX-5 that replaced a 2005 Hyundai Elantra (bought new). I keep cars for a long time, but am likely to move to an EV sometime in the next decade as solid state batteries become available. I barely drive as it is, in just over 3 years I've put 7300 miles on the CX-5.

In this episode of 'Things That Piss Me Off'.........

I have two credit cards, a Chase Freedom for gas/groceries, and a Citi Double Cash for bills/major purchases. Apparently starting on March 27 I won't be able to redeem points on my Chase card for cash back unless I have a Chase account to redeem to. Guess I'll have to find another "everyday"...

    The mild annoyances thread!

This morning I got up early to upgrade a work system, only to discover I could not connect to my work PC from home. Drove in to work to find that it failed to reboot after a patch cycle. It's a brand new HP G1i "workstation". Fuck you, HP. My old Dell was rock solid. :(

How long do you keep the boxes for products?

Main Street was one of my first sets! :D I have way too many Lego boxes, all flattened to save space. I really should get rid of most of them, when reselling a set it's a lot easier to not have to ship a huge box, and the "lost" value from not having the box probably isn't worth keeping them all.

What happened today that you liked?

When we finally got above freezing yesterday afternoon, I spent about half an hour attempting to clear the ice off my driveway, but only managed to partially clear a small section nearest the garage (the driveway slopes toward the house and that section is in perpetual shade). What I liked...

    The mild annoyances thread!

Yeah, it does have an SSD for the OS drive. Supposedly it has at least one NVMe slot open as well, but given prices on those these days it'd be a hard sell to request one or more of those instead of the spinning rust drives.
