Netflix increases prices for all plans by up to $2 per month

The most egregious thing about this, IMHO, is charging a 35% premium to stream the 4K bits. You're just squeezing your most dedicated customers for no good reason.

Netflix quietly drops support for casting to most TVs

My hotel solution is a small backpack with an old Apple TV, a Switch dock, and some cables. The tvOS captive WiFi and Home Screen Sync features are really helpful for this. (Maybe someday Apple will get on board with a dongle-sized Apple TV and let me turn the backpack into a small pouch.)

If you own a Juicebox EV charger, you need to read this

I track my charging data pretty closely, as part of a broader effort to manage home electricity usage (I also look at the solar app, and the HVAC system app, and the utility dashboard). It will be a shame to lose that data.

A personality quiz for the math-inclined

But why should we start the circle on January 1? To handle this properly, the circle should begin on one of the solstices, and then Pi Day should fall on the other one. (We should also make January 1 fall on the solstice, but that's a harder problem.)

A personality quiz for the math-inclined

Missed opportunity to bring up tau in the Pi Day discussion.

Internet picks “werewolf clawing off its own shirt” as new Michigan “I Voted” sticker

This case isn't like the others, because it's not a prank—the werewolf is unironically a great "I Voted" sticker.

iPadOS 18 could ship with built-in Calculator app, after 14 Calculator-less years

macOS needs a Calculator widget. I used to use it a lot back when Dashboard was a thing. Now I resort to typing expressions into the pop-up Spotlight search box. What I really wish for, though, is a lightweight mini-spreadsheet tool. Something I can keep in the corner of the screen and do some...

tvOS 17’s extra column of icons is its most useful new feature in years

Beyond the content and metadata standards you suggest, my biggest wish for App Store enforcement is even simpler: video playback must use the standard UI, with narrowly-constrained extension points for customization—no more rolling your own video player that doesn't quite work the same as all...

    Apple phasing out m4v downloads

To be clear, I don't have a problem to solve here, it just seemed like a notable policy change. Yes, you'll see lots of people in the thread fiddling with different download quality checkboxes, mostly unsuccessfully. The change seems to be that doing so is less likely to have an effect. It...

    Apple phasing out m4v downloads

I gave up on Apple movie purchases/downloads years ago because I could see where this was going, but I was sad to see this discussion in MacRumors: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apple-tv-movies-some-download-as-movpkg-filetype.2355658/ It appears that m4v downloads are being silently...

SwitchBot is the smart home stuff I recommend to doubters, and it’s on sale

Reminds me of Logitech Harmony: control-everything concept that works by using standard UIs rather a proprietary device-supported backdoor. Makes some cool stuff possible, but will probably suffer from the same sorts of problems: no/limited feedback, so easy to get out of sync; tricky timing...

Twitter users fear new CEO will end Musk’s commitment to free speech on platform

The headline is really bad on its own, but then made doubly bad by the fact that the article doesn't really say anything about "Twitter users" fearing a reduced "commitment" to "free speech".

Finding a communicating thermostat that isn't ugly

Lower- and medium-tier heat pumps (and AC units, and gas furnaces) operate using binary on/off signals. Thermostat says "send heat", the unit turns on and sends heat. But the higher-end, more efficient systems require what's called a "communicating thermostat", which supports two-way...

Finding a communicating thermostat that isn't ugly

Hmm, yes, OpenTherm seems to be a European standard (I'm in the US). I see lots of mentions about using it with boilers, which wouldn't be relevant to me. Unfortunate, because something like that would be really nice to decouple the system manufacturer from the UI manufacturer.

Finding a communicating thermostat that isn't ugly

(I'm sure when Apple ships the Apple Heat Pump™️ it will have great built-in software and this discussion will be moot. Just looking for the least bad option in the mean time.)

Finding a communicating thermostat that isn't ugly

I dunno if this qualifies as "other hardware", but I don't see a better forum and I've gotten some great advice from Ars users in the past, so I'll give it a try... I'd like to replace my old HVAC system with a high-efficiency heat pump. I've been fairly happy using Nest thermostats in the...

RIP Apple TV HD: Apple went all-in on 4K yesterday

Yes, of course newer Apple TVs support all the older resolutions. It's such a weird framing for this article. "RIP the 4G iPhone. Lot's of cellular networks still use 4G, but we don't think they're in Apple's target market anymore."

New Apple TV 4K, powered by A15 chip, adds Dolby Vision and HDR10+

Alternatively: they dropped the price of the standard model by $30 and added 96 GB of storage 🤩 (oh and there's this Lite version over here that you won't care about, just ignore it)

Where might HDR10+ content be coming from? Is Amazon Prime the most prominent video service that supports it?

Elon Musk provides an update on Starship: “It’s been mindbogglingly difficult”

I used to share your skepticism, but have come around. What I realized: it's not about creating a more livable environment than some future post-apocalyptic Earth. It's about creating a more capable civilization (again, compared to some future post-apocalyptic Earth). The scenario is something...
