Tesla’s Superchargers open up to GM EVs today—adapters needed

A few weeks ago I downloaded the Tesla app and set my vehicle as a Chevy Bolt, and it didn't show any chargers near my location. I just checked again and it's showing several, so I believe that means the Tesla app can be used as well.

US sues RealPage, claims rental-pricing algorithm used by landlords is illegal

I spent six years living at an apartment complex that used Realpage, and during that time my rent increased over 50% (going from $800/month to about $1250/month). Other apartment complexes in the area also used Realpage and raised their rents similarly, so moving wouldn't have offered any...

Amazon is bricking primary feature on $160 Echo device after 1 year

I'm of the opposite mindset - if something requires a cloud connection to function, I'd rather pay a subscription fee if it works well. Cloud infrastructure costs money to run, and paying for that infrastructure with one-time hardware sales usually isn't sustainable. That means that they either...

Microsoft strips ads from Skype in a move toward “user-centric design”

Skype for Business and Skype (for consumers) are two completely different products which have little in common other than the name and that they're both instant messaging/conferencing apps. I suspect that company is using the former, while this article is referring to the latter. Though that's...

Microsoft strips ads from Skype in a move toward “user-centric design”

They still could be trying to kill it off. By removing ads, that would mean that Skype will be generating less revenue going forward. The less revenue a product generates, the easier it is to justify discontinuing it. Of course, the introduction of new functionality does contradict this, but it...

Microsoft strips ads from Skype in a move toward “user-centric design”

I'm sure the roughly twenty people who still use Skype will be delighted with this news.

Roku ad push continues with plans to put video ads in OS home screen

Factory reset, then don't give them the WiFi password. I have two Roku TVs, and they both let me set them up without network access. I have an Apple TV 4k connected to both of them, and it works very pleasantly with no ads.

Business groups sue FTC to block ban on noncompetes, claim they help workers

They understand that leverage is a vital part of bargaining, right? If an employee can't easily leave to work at another employer, then what leverage do they have to bargain with?

Billions of public Discord messages may be sold through a scraping service

Most likely just using compromised accounts to scrape data from any servers said accounts are in. Account hijacking is a recurring issue on Discord - usually by sending malicious scripts ("hey, I made this game, can you test it out") or getting people to try authorizing random applications on...

“Ban Chinese electric vehicles now,” demands US senator

I bought a 2023 Bolt EV, brand new, for around $32k. At the time, it was the most affordable new EV on the market. If the Seagull is sub-$10k, then a 125% tax on it's price is still significantly cheaper than $32k.

The 2024 “Modern Manners” book now includes EV charging etiquette

I feel like giving preferential parking to EVs (such as covered spots or spots close to the entrance) only encourages ICEing. If it's raining, someone's going to want a covered spot, and if they see an available open spot with an EV charger, they're gonna be less likely to care that they may end...

The 2024 “Modern Manners” book now includes EV charging etiquette

It depends on the vehicle and plug. The Chevy Bolt will lock a DC Fast Charger, but it will not lock a slower level 2 charger. However, properly designed/functioning L2 chargers will have a switch in the release button that triggers the charger to cut power as soon as you press it to unplug the...

The 2024 “Modern Manners” book now includes EV charging etiquette

Per Chargepoint's documentation, yes: https://na.chargepoint.com/waitlist_driver_faq#F2 I should note that these chargers I'm talking about are owned by the Ikea store, not Chargepoint directly. Their documentation makes it sound like whoever owns the charger gets to decide how the queue works...

The 2024 “Modern Manners” book now includes EV charging etiquette

My local Ikea has a few Chargepoint stations for EVs, and they have a queuing system where if all the plugs are in use, you can just scan your tag/phone to get in a queue. You then park elsewhere, go do your thing, and when a plug opens it lets you know it's your turn. EVGo also has...

Ford rethinks EV strategy, is working on a smaller, cheaper EV platform

I feel like a part of OnStar's success can be attributed to people forgetting they have it. The safety features really only matter if you get into a wreck or your car gets stolen - situations people try to avoid. The connected/data features only matter if you are using the built in navigation...

Ford rethinks EV strategy, is working on a smaller, cheaper EV platform

I believe that's called "leasing a vehicle" and that's been a thing for many years.

Ford says customers will get free adapters to use Tesla Superchargers

There's a lot of low quality EVSEs (chargers) available on Amazon, a lot of which are not UL Listed, meaning they don't necessarily comply with American safety standards. Electric vehicle charging uses a massive amount of electricity. Usually a "Level 2" home charger will provide 7-14kW of...

Ford says customers will get free adapters to use Tesla Superchargers

A lot of EVSEs go a step further and have a switch in the mechanical release button of the plug, so as soon as you press the button it tells the EVSE to cut power.

Ford says customers will get free adapters to use Tesla Superchargers

Different EVs charge differently. A Tesla takes about 10-15 minutes of charging to add 100+ miles to its range. A Chevy Bolt takes about 30-45 minutes to add 100 miles. The problem is that, much like gas pumps - only one car can use a charger at a time. When Tesla's advertising how fast their...

Ford says customers will get free adapters to use Tesla Superchargers

That's for the current "universal" Superchargers that have CCS plugs built in. Ford has implied that you'll be able to charge at a Supercharger using their app, but it's not been made clear if that will be required, or if you'll have a choice between Ford's app or Tesla's app.
