CrowdStrike blames testing bugs for security update that took down 8.5M Windows PCs

Agreed. Due to the Windows architecture, it's required for this kind of software. What's especially indefensible is their driver isn't doing ANY input validation on these updates. Dave's Garage has a good explainer. Frankly, I'm surprised this behavior is even allowed for a Ring 0 driver.

Linus Torvalds reiterates his tabs-versus-spaces stance with a kernel trap

I just can't understand why someone would want to hit a key sequence 2/4/6/8 times versus ONE time in order to accomplish the same effect. Extra bonus: A decent editor will allow configuration of that spacing for tabs so you can customize it to your preferences. Personally, I'm a tabs person, I...

Missouri county declares state of emergency amid suspected ransomware attack

I picked the wrong decade to become an infrastructure engineer. This is the stuff of my IT nightmares.

VMware admits sweeping Broadcom changes are worrying customers

Leo Getz said it best: "They f*** you at the drive-thru, okay? They f*** you at the drive-thru! They know you're gonna be miles away before you find out you got f***ed! They know you're not gonna turn around and go back, they don't care."

George Carlin’s heirs sue comedy podcast over “AI-generated” impression

I'm with what Kyle proposed in his article: Given his views on the afterlife, I’m inclined to think he’d have said something along the lines of “What the fuck do I care? I’m dead. This is your fucking problem.”

X’s Yaccarino calls Musk “candid and profound” after “go f*** yourself” tirade

.....except advertisers. If THEY make up their mind that they don't want to be associated with the "Titanic of Social Media," then it's a conspiracy. This situation with X/Twitter/Musk is like watching someone shoot themselves in the foot....in slow motion...over and over again.

Ultra-processed food warning may be in next federal dietary guidance: Report

I was incredibly impressed by how Mexico labeled much of its packaged products with black octagons that actually INFORMED the buyer with simple information about the contents. If memory serves, you got warnings about excessive salt, fat, sugar, and/or calories. Not really much different than...

Researchers tell owners to “assume compromise” of unpatched Zyxel firewalls

I think I still have one of their modems from the 90’s. It may not have the bandwidth, but it’s way more secure! 😉

Passwordless Google accounts are easier and more secure than passwords. Here’s why.

Once again, a very handy feature not available to Google Workspace accounts until 🤷‍♂️. As time moves on, it has become harder and harder for me to find value in Workspace.

Before Google kills free Gsuite accounts, why not offer a family email plan?

Was considering M365 until I read in the FAQ you MUST use GoDaddy to host your domain. Seriously? Well, at least I have options now unlike when I first registered my domain with InterNic.

Should you wear a face mask? Here’s all the data we have

I lived in Japan for three years back in the 90’s, finding it odd how many Japanese wore face masks on the regular. Being young, small minded and generally ignorant, I just passed it off as “yet another weird thing about the Japanese.” (This coming from a mid-western yokel who had ZERO...

NTSB blasts Tesla, CalTrans, and NHTSA for Autopilot death

Tesla‘s non-response/non-action on these issues has slowly eroded my confidence in the company. When they DO comment about their “Autopilot” system (a TERRIBLE name for this technology), it’s generally along the “blame the user” lines. As a technologist, I can kinda agree with this to a point...
