Pixel phones are getting an actual weather app in 2024, with a bit of AI

Na, I think I'll stick with WeatherCAN (What I'd recommend to any Canadians).

Countdown begins for third try launching Boeing’s Starliner crew capsule

They did not have two spares, it's a three computer system that requires at-least two systems agree with each-other. Loosing one system means they where essentially running on a backup with no redundancy. There was no way to avoid an abort at that point.

Vending machine error reveals secret face image database of college students

We share a land border with Greenland, unfortunately they are a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, and as of the 80's not part of the EU, I was vary sad when I found out.

200-foot AM radio tower disappears, halting Alabama station broadcast

Looks like a tower to me: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.8067882,-87.2686755,3a,15y,342.94h,91.69t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWJzxeTcMOcMph6rhON8n0g!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en&entry=ttu

Nvidia RTX 4080 Super review: All you need to know is that it’s cheaper than a 4080

I picked up a 7800XT with Starfield (I put 120 hours into the game in the first 2 months and plan to revisit it). And nothing from nvidia comes close to the value of that in my books.

Mazda not ready to bet on EVs but says more plug-ins for the US market

Not that I'm in the market (EVs don't work well for my use case and I don't drive often enough for there to be much benafit anyway). But still disappointing.

The 2024 Nissan Z Nismo is sharper and quicker, but it comes at a cost

I can fully accept that these days a manual transmission is slower. But I'd be driving a car like this for fun, not to win races. I've always owned manuals, but ended up with an automatic Subaru, despite it having more hp per lb, better suspension, and in much better condition. I still find...

Toyota is recalling 1.8 million RAV4s due to 12 V battery fire risk

There are two main types of lead acid batteries, Flooded and Sealed (SLA). Most cars use Maintenance Free Flooded cell Lead Acid batteries. They have a catalist to re-combine the hydrogen and oxygen that gets split when charging. But they still have a vent (and will drip if left on there side)...

Raw milk outbreak sickens 14 in Utah—a state with loose laws, bad track record

Well, you need un-homogenized milk for cheese and I think it's generally better for cooking. But un-pasteurized is just a health hazard (and illegal where I live).

What’s going on with the reports of a room-temperature superconductor?

Though thankfully only used in small and/or old piston aircraft, and the FAA is trying to replace it. Alcohol is used as an octane booster in road vehicles but the FAA deems it unsafe for aircraft. And a surprising number of older aircraft can't handle it. Anything with a with a turbo jet or...

Best standing desk accessories to get you on your feet

Well this is the first article by "Chuong Nguyen" that isn't called a dealmaster. Looks to me like slightly better hidden paid for advertising.

Not your grandpa’s ride—the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, tested

Many adventure bikes already sort of do that. You need something to grip with your knees, and moving the fuel tank to under the seat is better for weight distribution. Mine (BMW F650GS) has the oil tank, battery and airbox there. And my buddies has a cubby, airbox, and battery there (no drysump...

Google’s “Topics” advertising system starts rolling out to Chrome Canary

One of many reasons I won't use Chrome, and avoid Chromium browsers. They've gained a monopoly like IE of old.

DIY mechanical keyboard switch lets you set its actuation point

I totally don't have a dozen other more important projects on the go... But ordered some magnets for testing. I'm kind if heavy handed with my keyboard, and my last good one (mid range with cherry mx keys) wasn't reliable.

DIY mechanical keyboard switch lets you set its actuation point

A better 3d printable key is the void switch: https://github.com/riskable/void_switch Sins it uses three magnets you get a definitive buckling spring like feel.

Mounting poisonings, blindness, deaths as toxic hand sanitizers flood market

Yes, methanol can be absorbed through the skin, but the amount required (ld50 of 2+grams per kg) means it's unlikely to to enough for symptoms unless you;re bathing in it. Keep in mind most of the sanitizer evaporates, only a small percentage gets absorbed. Also you body is quite capable of...

Mounting poisonings, blindness, deaths as toxic hand sanitizers flood market

I use methanol for cleaning, and regularly get it on my hands. I really think all the real cases of poisoning are from people drinking it. Also I have never seen any evidence that methanol poising is cumulative (all store bought booze has a small amount).
