HDR10+ Advanced joins Dolby Vision 2 in trying to make you like motion smoothing

If you never saw a soap opera would the soap opera effect bother you? Soap operas do this intentionally, possibly because it gives people the feeling of watching a live performance. It is like having a play performed in your home by real live actors without having to get off your couch. So...

Flush door handles are the car industry’s latest safety problem

The guy who suggested a flush button that you push had an idea. Lots of replies that seem to misinterpret as single mechanism that needs a push then pull which already exists in many cars. I think what he meant was a flush push button that ONLY unlatches the door. Pulling the door open further...

“I’m getting dizzy”: Man films Waymo self-driving car driving around in circles

"Johns" should not be CEO of anything. He ignored the polite lady's requests, talked over her, and was not intelligent (AI my butt) enough to realize he was talking to tech support. You ask for compensation after the fact from customer service, not while trying to stop a car. Plus he lied about...

Ghost of Yotei: The acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima is getting a sequel

For two years now every Ars article is followed by an invitation to view a story about the Unsolved Mysteries of Quantum Leap. As I type this it is just below again.

EV fast-charging comes to condos and apartments

There is also going to be 277V charging available to apartment buildings soon. Most condos have 208V @ 40A which is 8.3kW which is low end Level 2. At 277V you can run at 11kW. I'm wondering why this tech doesn't use some type of capacitor storage.

EV fast-charging comes to condos and apartments

If you have 3x 40A circuits available and don't have to run the wiring very far you can get the wiring done for less than $USD3,000 and a company like Plugzio can get you 3 Level 2 chargers for about $USD4,000. Which includes automatic billing. So the $7,500 per charger is way off.

Microsoft will stop accepting new third-party print drivers in Windows

Most printers now have the driver onboard and can download and update over the internet. I doubt they are banning 3rd party drivers, just not including them. Better drivers for multifunction devices are needed also, particularly scanning.

What happens when the NASCAR car needs to turn right? Does it just go off the track?

Rovio delists pay-to-own Angry Birds because it hurt free-to-play earnings

So the article says "negatively impacted" over and over and over, but never states how they know this and never answers the question of why the presence of one game would stop people from dowloading another game. Are we supposed to be psychic? If I can't find Angry Birds after searching for 10...

Viral Instagram photographer has a confession: His photos are AI-generated

Reminds me of wine connoisseurs who love to hear themselves compliment a fine glass of wine that they later find out came from a box.

Mini-robot shifts from solid to liquid to escape its cage—just like the T-1000

I think this was my science project in 3rd grade except I used an ice cube.

Samsung’s new touch tech enables thinner, lighter OLED laptops

I would love a 16:10 screen for a large desktop monitor but I guess this is laptop size only.

BMW is developing a full-screen head-up display for 2025’s Neue Klasse

How can it augment reality by projecting on the window for more than one person? The viewpoint would be incorrect for all passengers other than the driver.

Electric cars are doomed if fast charger reliability doesn’t get better

The article ignores the fact that charging is not the same as filling a tank. Most of the time you only need to charge the small amount you used since the last charge. Also, electrical outlets are far more common than gas stations so keeping topped up is not hard. Most new EV cars now come with...

Couple bought home in Seattle, then learned Comcast Internet would cost $27,000

Anyone who can afford a house in Seattle can afford this, it is less than the cost of the average car. Or they can install an inexpensive point to point wireless connection.
