Lyrics site LiveUniverse slammed with $6.6 million copyright judgment

I had a friend in highschool who came to school one day and said "I don't like Jimmy Hendrix any more". We were puzzled, until he explained that Jimmy was signing about kissing guys. Much hilarity ensued.

New Zealand prime minister apologizes for illegal Dotcom spying

My understanding (from the radio reports) is that the GCSB has been trouble determining citizenship for at least 4 years. It make you wonder where they get their information. The Deputy Prime Minister (not President, lol) signed a certificate 4 months after the spying in order to hush up the...

Helicopters, guns, attack dogs: New video shows raid on Dotcom home

An FYI to add some context to this, the New Zealand police don't routinely pack guns. If there is an offender who is armed, they call in the "Armed Offender Squad" to negotiate, and possibly take them out as a last resort. I think the weapons police usually have are cuffs, pepper spray, tasers...

MPAA leak: O'Dwyer, TVShack.net case "isn't about Internet freedom."

"I'm surprised the UK allows something like this. It would be unconstitutional to extradite someone from the USA in the reverse situation" I'm sure if someone was to be extradited to China or Thailand, the UK and the US would be up in arms about it.

Free Source Filmmaker brings Valve's 3D animation tools to the public

I'm surprised that Blendernation hasn't picked up on this yet. I agree this is an awesome tool, I can see it being used in previs especially if the animation can be tweaked in real time, and exoprted to other programs.

Winamp's woes: how the greatest MP3 player undid itself

I still use winamp at work, and a winamp clone at home. Its simple, and it does what I want, and its not itunes (which I hate), though I'm only using 2.95. I tried some of the other players, but even VLC doesn't compare to the simplicity of winamp.

Falcon Heavy rocket, Dream Chaser vehicle move forward

This is awesome, now where is my flying car? I'm sure I left it around here somewhere :p @another ars account: I believe XolotlLoki was pointing out typographical errors: "Intelsat began as a consortium of 11 countries *in* 1964," "Neither company has announced which satellite will travel...

New $74 Android mini computer is slightly larger than a thumb drive

Thats what I'd get it for, I've got a large, noisy computer as my firewall/router, I'd love to get one of these of the Pi to replace it. I might have to look into it...

Kim Dotcom lampoons New Zealand MP in his new rap song

The problem is that Banks asked Dotcom to split the donation, as a $50k donation would look less "suspicious" Banks then went on to deny that he knew Dotcom, with his office saying that he'd spoken to the guy "for a total of 20 minutes" (in his entire life) despite the fact he'd flown to...

Expert witness says most popular Hotfile downloads are open source apps

If we view MegaUpload as a "test case" for all of the other cases against cyberlockers (which will continue) then there are quite a few procedures which will (hopefully) change, cherry picking evidence and locking up servers being one of them.

Carpathia blasts government for hypocrisy on Megaupload servers

I thought that was Australia? Is there no judicial recourse that Carpathia have, like suing the government for use of the servers? I understand how MU need them for evidence and its assets are frozen, but can't they get a court order for the servers to be released as part of their defense?

New 3D printer could create nano-devices in minutes

I think 3d printing is one of the most exciting things happening right now. The biggest limits seem to be materials and IP. However, once you can print electronics, its going to be all over. People will be able to print what they want, including other printers. I can see Corporations trying to...

Hacked Kinect used to manipulate images, more to come

From what I understand, the kinect uses pulses of light. The wired article (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/11/ ... work/all/1) describes it thus: "The camera transmits invisible near-infrared light and measures its “time of flight” after it reflects off the objects. Time-of-flight works...

Slow death of split-screen, why ModNation Racers loves it

Army of Two (both of them) has fantastic split screen. I've played both on a large screen LCD (50 inch) and a smaller 24 inch widescreen, and it handle them both really well. There is enough room to see around the characters, and yet you can still see what they are doing. Having said that...
