Can we please just go back to using smaller wheels and tires?

"Why is this bad? "There are three principle reasons I dislike this trend. Bigger wheels might look better and allow for larger brakes, but they negatively impact ride and handling, they're more expensive, and they sap energy efficiency." I would add a fourth - and my prime reason for being so...

The “low-cost MacBook” rumor just won’t die, but it might finally make sense

I have an ageing Dell XPS. I would love to replace it with a Mac. But I really got to like the Dell's touchscreen. So easy to lounge with the laptop lying down in a sofa and surf or close windows using fingers. Please, enable touch on Mac screens.

The iPhone 13 mini is dead, leaving small phone lovers in a lurch

I doubt the reason for not having a 14 mini or 15 mini is the lack of sales. It was always a niche market, but a very strong one, with committed consumers, and one where where Apple ruled. Me and my entire extended family have the 13 mini. I suspect the mini was relatively expensive to develop...

BMW’s Neue Klasse points to a radical reinvention for future sedans

Long bonnet, massive C-pillar. This car is just another iteration in a long line of obsolete space-wasters. Nothing new her. Nothing appealing. Nothing aspirational. I am hoping, waiting for something practical (large inside, as small as can be outside) to replace my car with, but the industry...

iPhone 15 rumors take shape: More screen, titanium body, and (finally) USB-C

A year ago, I got aFLIR One Pro. It's an infrared camera, which attaches to the iPhone's lightning port. It's not the kind of thing one writes off in 3 or 4 years. I really hope there will be a practical adapter of sorts.

iPhone 15 rumors take shape: More screen, titanium body, and (finally) USB-C

All my family and my closest friends have the 13 mini (as do I). It's probably a coincidence, but they're all quite convinced it's the best phone for them. In some way, by having scrapped it for (I presume) lack of popularity, it feels like Apple is telling me/us that we're all a bit weird, indeed.

Insteon finally comes clean about its sudden smart home shutdown

"optimizing assets" when liquidating probably also means parceling up and selling on user data? That's why I am very stingy with my data: even if the custody is limited to the company supplying you the service, what happens when they sell out / go bust /... ?

Apple’s new iPhone SE features 5G, a faster CPU, and more

I had the 7 and it served me well for maybe 4 years. But the 13 mini I replaced it with was worth the upgrade. Its form factor is quite similar. FaceID works well - I was not keen on getting that intimate with my phone, but in my case the unlocking works more reliably than touchID. The main...

iPhones of US diplomats hacked using “0-click” exploits from embattled NSO

"The only thing stopping a bad guy with an exploit is a good guy with..." oh, wait, there's really no symmetry here, so even that nonsensical argument doesn't apply.. kinda like with nukes. Maybe we should work on a global treaty banning the commercial use / peace-time use / all use (I'm open to...

Hyundai and Kia preview compelling three-row EVs coming to US in 2024

Will we ever reverse the trend of more and more aggressive looks? It's as if car execs want to compensate for the (welcome) lack of engine roar and belch by making the cars look like World War I tanks... No need to do that, really.

Meet this unique, compact Android phone from a Japanese toaster company

Remember the Ericsson T66i? Tiny bit of plastic, less than 60 grams. You could actually tuck it into your cuffs. I guess a cell-capable watch would be the equivalent these days. But the market took quite a detour to get there.

Meet this unique, compact Android phone from a Japanese toaster company

Completely agree. On top of that: the article on poor iPhone Mini sales, which is linked in the above article, is an old one. It refers to the Mini 12. The Mini 13 improved on the 12 quite a bit (a real top-of-the-line camera and better battery life). I got one and, coming from an iPhone 7...

Intel’s 12th-gen Alder Lake CPUs will try to make up for Rocket Lake’s stumbles

Tile’s 2022 lineup has longer battery life, longer range, and a UWB model

Like I said, I would have been happy to have a device which helps me find keys in a 10-20m radius (around the house). The Tile was advertised by the local (very large) retailer as being able to do that, so I was surprised the services you describe could not be opted out of. I did not see any...

Tile’s 2022 lineup has longer battery life, longer range, and a UWB model

Thanks. This is new to me. I could not get it to work as a local bluetooth tracker without staying connected. In any case, if it really can work as a local bluetooth tracker, one should have the option of using it without an account.

Tile’s 2022 lineup has longer battery life, longer range, and a UWB model

I returned a bunch of Tiles 30 mins after receving them. I wanted to use them to find keys around the house. They did not allow for this without having an internet connection (and maybe a few more steps I did not fancy). The tracker was advertised as bluetooth-based, which is what I was...

Ireland fails to enforce EU law against Big Tech

That in itself is a massive stereotype. Did you forget to add /s? But indeed, the quote by that columnist is jarring.

What to expect from Apple’s September 14 “California Streaming” event

Yes, that's true. I am less concerned about the involuntary unlocking of my phone, than with the idea of registering my face in great detail for something which can be achieved by other (simpler and less invasive) means. I'm pretty sure Apple's FaceID is secure - more so than any other...

What to expect from Apple’s September 14 “California Streaming” event

It's a clear preference & I have several reasons for it. No need to give out to me over that.
