    In addition to the answers already provided, the OEM power supply only provided 75mA of current maximum for the -5 volt rail. So, even if there was a short to ground, it didn't draw much power and heat up.

    As long as that drive is physically connected to the internal SATA bus, the OS is going to try to read from it. So, yeah, opening Mac and disconnecting drive is the only option.
