Tech firm’s new CTO gets indicted; company then claims he was never CTO

Clearly your reporting is wrong. Ramyond was CTO, not Raymond :sneaky:

Welcome to our latest design update, Ars 9.0!

Nope. I like the L to open and the J/K/L keyboard navigation. I just wish it didn't open in a new tab.

Welcome to our latest design update, Ars 9.0!

Fair point. But then why do the other 3 layouts, and clicking the "read full story" link not behave that way? Settings suck but I wish that was a setting. I prefer the back button game (a swipe on my trackpad) to closing a tab with CMD + W, but that's just me.

Welcome to our latest design update, Ars 9.0!

Wow. I may be in the minority but I like the new design. I appreciate the 4 different view options, although I do agree with a lot of the comments here about information density. I'm mainly bothered by minor consistency nitpicks. One thing I love about Neutron Star: the way stories have a state...

UniFi devices broadcasted private video to other users’ accounts

Correct. I was trying to say you can use a USG/UXG or firewall-of-choice + UniFi switches and APs with self-hosted controllers. UniFi layer 3 is basic at best, but it can usually handle switching and wireless. That's why a lot of people keep UniFi at layer 2. But to your point, yeah, the...

UniFi devices broadcasted private video to other users’ accounts

😬 Insert HomerBackingIntoBush.gif here I knew I should have been more creative with my username. But thank you! Cheers.

UniFi devices broadcasted private video to other users’ accounts

True. To be clear for those of you lucky enough to not know the specifics as well as I do. There are several flavors of UniFi, and "Cloud" means several things. Putting all the other applications (UniFi Protect for video cameras, etc) aside and focusing on UniFi Network, you can: Download the...

Liveblog: All the news from Apple’s “Wonderlust” event

Fair point. I only spent a few seconds searching for something to represent the mood at the time. Definitely not 100% representative. Anecdotally, I remember a lot of negativity surrounding the port change, and especially the underwhelming 3.5" to 4" screen size bump on the iPhone 5.

Liveblog: All the news from Apple’s “Wonderlust” event

I doubt they will meaningfully talk about the Vision Pro. They may mention it in passing, or they may mention it if they have an iPad/M3 Mac event before the end of the year. Vision Pro will have it's own launch event sometime early next year. That will be the time to go in depth and re-do the...

Liveblog: All the news from Apple’s “Wonderlust” event

The hatred of Lightning is overblown. It was a great connector when it launched in 2012, pre-USB-C. Apple promised Lightning was the connector for the next decade, and they have delivered on that. Being reversible was a blessing, and it was so much better than both the iPod 30-pin, and USB...

Thank you for this. I got one on Prime day and realized I'm still within the return window. Guess I'll be Sans SanDisk

Apple releases first public betas of iOS 17, macOS 14 Sonoma, and other new OSes

I've been running macOS 14 and iPadOS 17 betas since launch. They have been stable enough, and I haven't had any major issues. Too chicken to put iOS 17 on my phone yet, though. Widgets on the macOS desktop has been nice, even if it makes me long for a separate space for them a la Dashboard...

iPhone 14 teardown: One key change makes it much easier to repair

We're probably all numb to it thanks to constant march of progress, but wow, it is amazing how small that logic board is.

    Recommend Mesh Networking Hardware

Author of charts here - I never got to the bottom of the AC Wave 2 support for Instant On. I've seen it both ways, including in their official documentation. It's been a while since I dug into the details, but I chose to show them as Wave 1 devices due to the Wi-Fi Alliance certification at the...

Biden: ISPs that take gov’t funding will have to offer “low-cost” plans

I work for a nonprofit community WISP. I'm putting the finishing touches on a proposal for a network that covers the poorest county in our state, where something like 80% of people don't have access to Internet. The fact that municipal broadband and community-owned networks were dropped from...

Apple hardware chief Dan Riccio stepped down to focus on AR/VR

Never underestimate Apple’s ability to reuse a name. See: -MagSafe vs. MagSafe -iPad vs. iPad vs. the “new” iPad -Apple TV (app) vs. Apple TV (hardware) vs. Apple TV+ (service) etc.
