At I/O 2025, Google leaves no doubt that AI Mode is the future of search

It's been a couple of months that I've been searching more with chatgpt and I'm finding that for some use cases it's more efficient than a plain Google search. For example: "Acting as an expert in carpentry tools, please find the top three most respected companies that make straight edges in the...

Google discontinues Nest Protect smoke alarm and Nest x Yale lock

Ok, I'm fed up with Google. What ecosystem should I invest in? I'm willing to start from scratch and invest whatever it takes. My ideal smart home system would be controlled by a smart assistant (ChatGPT would be awesome but I know it's not ready yet), and have all the smart things: security...

Researchers astonished by tool’s apparent success at revealing AI’s hidden motives

"... the broader purpose of studying hidden objectives is to prevent future scenarios where powerful AI systems might intentionally deceive or manipulate human users." I don't know what intentionally means here.

Google is expanding AI Overviews and testing AI-only search results

When I ask ChatGPT Plus to search the web for something, I get great results. Of course, I engineer my prompts so as to keep the bot honest, check its work, provide links to sources, etc. When I do the same thing with Gemini Premium, I get garbage.

The surveillance tech waiting for workers as they return to the office

I think they care only about profits which often results in the abuse of power and cruelty but always is a by product of an immoral, depraved disregard for workers' dignity that is baked into the system.

The surveillance tech waiting for workers as they return to the office

“You couldn’t just rule them tyrannically, or so they said. You had to treat them as your fellow Christians, with dignity and respect. In many ways the original work ethic was an ethic which uplifted workers.” There was absolutely nothing uplifting about Puritanism.

I agree with OpenAI: You shouldn’t use other peoples’ work without permission

Agreed, cooperation and planning to achieve a goal is efficient, effective, and catalytic. But, competition. No one wants to share everything with everyone else and be equal. They want to have more than the next guy because it makes them feel special. And, corporations are required to prioritize...

Movie industry loves bill that would force ISPs to block piracy websites

"Rather than attacking the problem at its source—bringing the people running overseas piracy websites to court—" Give me a break.

Streaming prices climb in 2025 after already surpassing inflation rates

Yup, Platinum is $695/yr, but it pays for itself through the cash back. And you get points and other benefits. (OT) I switched about a month ago from T-Mobile (after 23 yrs) to Verizon, which is better in every way and gives the above perks. And I traded in my old Pixel 2XL, worth about $100 on...

Streaming prices climb in 2025 after already surpassing inflation rates

Saving a few bucks with perks: Amex pays for Walmart+ which includes Paramount+ so I get that for free. I subscribe to a Netflix/Max bundle through Verizon and upgraded to premium and plus so both ad-free. I get Peacock+ also through Verizon via their +Play perk. I bit the bullet and pay Amazon...

Anthropic adds “Citations” in bid to avoid confabulating AI models

I have a ChatGPT custom instruction that requires all output to include links to sources. Of course I frequently have to remind it to apply it. And sometimes the links are dead. Maybe I'll try Claude again and see if this works better than my workaround.

Anthropic chief says AI could surpass “almost all humans at almost everything” shortly after 2027

The continuous, ubiquitous, hyperbolic, utterly baseless claims made by these amoral, self-interested bleebs are beginning to test my patience.
