At I/O 2025, Google leaves no doubt that AI Mode is the future of search

Editors of this site have turned into crazed fanboys. Or sorry the opposite, haters. I get if you don't like a product but you have to show some objectivity. Ars has fallen so far.

Zero-click searches: Google’s AI tools are the culmination of its hubris

I actually really like AI overviews now. I know blasphemy but there is no doubt they have gotten better.

Why Google Gemini’s Pokémon success isn’t all it’s cracked up to be

I think this points to the age old idea that a tool is only as good as the person who wields it. I find there are a lot of people that think AI just replaces what they were doing with no effort. LLMs are tool like any other. They are used by people, they don't replace a person wholesale. You...

Researchers claim LM Arena’s AI leaderboard is biased against open models

I was expecting it to be much worse than this study shows. In any case, it told me the Gemini 2.5 pro was the best model around and I have to say I agree. So it's got something right.

Google search’s made-up AI explanations for sayings no one ever said, explained

Controversially, I have found the AI overviews have gotten a lot better and actually kind of like them now. Pretty much every time it has been wrong has been because the source it was referencing was wrong.

Will Mario Kart World’s $80 price become gaming’s new normal?

I hear this a lot and it does very much depends on your industry... But if we look at broad trends in the last 10 years we had wages lag behind from 2021-2023 but otherwise wage growth has outpaced inflation. I know this doesn't mesh with the narrative that nintendo is evil for charging so...

With the release of Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google looks toward a “dynamic” AI future

2.5 is pretty incredible. I've used it a lot now and it is the best model out there that is within practical reach. It is genuinely useful. I know others are quite cynical about all this and concerned about the current assistant. It may take time but given what this model can do it will...

MCP: The new “USB-C for AI” that’s bringing fierce rivals together

It was very recently updated to expand this somewhat but it is crazy to me this protocol was over SSE. It seems over engineered. Any reason this isn't running simply over more traditional REST APIs?

Google’s new experimental Gemini 2.5 model rolls out to free users

I've been using it since it came out. It is a great model. I'm convinced they have the best practical model in the world right now. What I mean by that is that openAI might have some better models but they are too expensive and too slow.

Oops: Google says it might have deleted your Maps Timeline data

Google seems to desperately want to get rid of this data. It auto enrolled me into a TTL of it and I think it is going local only by default soon?

Google’s 10-year-old Chromecast is busted, but a fix is coming

I have a Chromecast audio, it is the oldest bit of modern "tech" I have. This is sort of crazy to me given how at odds that is with Google's reputation. Hope they fix it soon. It has been a good run.

Gemini Live will learn to peer through your camera lens in a few weeks

Geeeez the cynicism in this comment section  I think this looks pretty cool. I'd be keen to try it out. Edit: and downvotes. Ars used to be a pretty fun place....

Google’s free Gemini Code Assist arrives with sky-high usage limits

Google is all on AI also the cost of switching to something else is extremely low (zero?). So this isn't really a concern Flash is decent but its best feature is its fast. My ideal is to use flash for inline autocomplete and claude for chat based prompting and larger completions.

New hack uses prompt injection to corrupt Gemini’s long-term memory

To be fair, workspace accounts don't have access to the memory feature used in this attack.

As Internet enshittification marches on, here are some of the worst offenders

Disagree. The gemini extension understands way better than the old extension. I've actually started to use the assistant again finally.

Backdoored package in Go mirror site went unnoticed for >3 years

Yup, this kind of attack can take root in almost any supply chain. I would be very surprised if there weren't things like this lingering in almost any popular languages package management.

Google’s Chrome Web Store has a serious spam problem promoting shady extensions

A significantly more granular permission system would be a start. But yes, it probably would require limiting usefulness.

Google’s Chrome Web Store has a serious spam problem promoting shady extensions

It's pretty clear browser extensions are one of the most exploitable security vectors. The whole system needs to be reworked across all vendors.

12 days of OpenAI: The Ars Technica recap

It was extremely underwhelming. The only thing interesting was o3. Everything else was one-uped by Google. And while o3 was interesting, it's not a model that most people will ever be able to use. From what I've read, it cost almost seven grand to run the benchmarks. That's answering only 400...
