Ars Asks: Share your shell and show us your tricked-out terminals!

Silly but useful. I have an alias for “cat > /dev/null”. I then use that terminal window as an ephemeral copy paste buffer which has “copy on select” semantics. It’s surprisingly useful. I use iTerm2 and I have some Python scripts that decorate the status bar. I like Powerline exists but don’t...

F1’s new engines are causing consternation over compression ratios

Part of what I disliked about F1 (the Brad Pitt movie) it was “oh wow Brad Pitt is the only person in the history of racing to go up to the edges of rules to get an advantage”. This happens all the time in every race series. Look up Smokey Yunick.

Supreme Court debates whether ISPs must kick pirates off the Internet

Will they kick off Meta/Facebook for torrenting, or is “pirating is only bad if you’re not rich already” going to be the rule here?

Samsung forces ads onto fridges; is a bad sign for other appliances

In a way, that this is from a korean company isn't too surprising. I was listening to a podcast where the Korean population crash is really hitting (among many other areas) home appliances hard. Just no need for a lot of household formation. so, you target upmarket, higher margin. and, as we...

Roku says unpopular autoplay ads are just a test

True for TVs. My RokuOS tv hasn’t touched a network since the day I got it. But, a stick kinda needs WiFi. This whole “no it was a joke.. unless it’s ok with you” bs sucks

AI-generated phishing emails are getting very good at targeting executives

It used to be “well I’m just worth the effort to target”. Now, effort is going to zero. Everyone needs to stay aware because everyone can be a target

Researchers hone in on headache-causing compounds in red wine

I stopped about a year ago, maybe closing in on 2. Just too much of a hit for not a lot of benefit. Wasn’t an alcoholic. Didn’t drink to excess. Just didn’t serve me. Congrats on clean living.

Mid 20s actually. It keeps pretty strong growth until mid twenties and slower but non-zero growth after.

Researchers hone in on headache-causing compounds in red wine

The “Asians get all red faced” is essentially this. A big chunk of the population doesn’t have the enzyme that processes acetaldehyde. My wife has this - she can drink maybe half a drink of anything. Her uncle is a hard drinker tho. It’s not universal There’s a drug for alcoholics called...

iOS 18.2, macOS 15.2 updates arrive today with image and emoji generation

Every build doesn't make it out the door nightly. I think for 18.0.0, the 18.0.0RC was the same as what shipped for the final build to everyone.

Company claims 1,000 percent price hike drove it from VMware to open source rival

You’ll get pat on the back for your genius. Never mind the slow bleed. The people who no longer say “well I used X and it worked pretty well” no, that’s for the next CEO to make excuses for. Those boats aren’t gonna buy themselves.

Elizabeth Warren calls for crackdown on Internet “monopoly” you’ve never heard of

It's the registrar and there's some "independent" (umm, not really) agent that owns it' it's just a row in a db someplace.

Elizabeth Warren calls for crackdown on Internet “monopoly” you’ve never heard of

Not sure why this was "monopoly you never heard of" this was a concern a long time ago. It was just forgotten.

Microsoft pushes full-screen ads for Copilot+ PCs on Windows 10 users

This is another reason why I don’t do Windows. Add this to the pile “record everything I do for AI use elsewhere”, force Microsoft accounts for everything, yadda yadda.
