Microsoft’s Game Pass gets cheaper, loses launch day Call of Duty access

It was rough around the edges when it launched, but it's become one of my favorites of all time that I play almost every weekend with friends thanks to all the Mechs and Campaign missions that have been added over time. The release of Mechwarrior 5: Clans dovetailed into the Clan Invasion...

Microsoft’s Game Pass gets cheaper, loses launch day Call of Duty access

I'm tired of not owning the stuff I pay for - I don't have the time to play all the stuff a subscription gives me. Hell, I'm spending most of my time on DRM-free games that have long-lasting value like Factorio or Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries more than I am playing anything new lately. My life is...

New Steam Deck competitor lets you easily swap in more RAM, storage

Of all the Steam Deck competitors I’ve seen, this is finally one that has four buttons on the back like the Steam deck. I wonder if they are paying the patent blood money to Scuf for it.

Sony enters the high-end custom controller arena with the DualSense Edge

Oof. Not having 4 back buttons makes it so I'll still need to take my thumb off of the right stick to hit 2 of the face buttons - my favorite part of the Xbox Elite or Scuf Reflex is that they have 4 back buttons and make it so I never need to take my thumb off of the stick. They were so close!

Office 365 is now Microsoft 365, and it’s getting new apps and features

Hmm, I wonder if/when we will see Windows wrapped up into this subscription. I'd love it if I could have 5 installs of Windows 10 Pro available at any time since I switch PC's around a decent amount.

Lumines Remastered turns the Nintendo Switch into a full-body vibration party

I believe it is the piece of equipment found in planetariums - the multi-faceted projector that can show starfields and presentations across a dome.

Samsung gets into the Surface clone business with the Galaxy TabPro S

Have AMOLED displays conquered their eventual screen 'ghosting' or 'burn-in' issues? If not, I'll never buy a device with a large display that will be showing very similar UI elements for a long period of time, and a productivity device like this fits that bill pretty well (spreadsheets, word...

Intel creates $125 million fund for tech firms led by women and minorities

Speaking as a white dude in tech, I'm all for this. We need some way to kickstart getting women into technology; there are way too many good-old-boys clubs or superiority complexes on the part of male nerds in the outfits I've worked in. Ideally, I'd prefer for women to be encouraged to get...

Report: Xbox One to get DVR functionality, “probably this year”

Not to pile on, but I am quite interested in this for OTA purposes. I used to run a couple HDHomeRun tuners feeding into a PC with Media Center, but it was a nightmare to maintain (plus has an interface as old as the hills). If I can plug in a tuner and tell my XBO my zip code to get listings...

Texas admonishes judge for posting Facebook updates about her trials

Generally, I consider it a good rule of thumb not to post work-related things on your personal Facebook page no matter what job you may have. No good usually comes of it.

Halo anthology makers apologize, will give distressed fans free ODST

ODST is easily my favorite Halo game - I was going to purchase it on the XB1 when it became available, but free is even better news than just knowing it was in production at all. I'm also really glad to see that they are providing the content free to all Xbox Live members. I don't play online...

Google’s Nexus Player—More prototype than finished product

The biggest news to me out of this thing is that x86 seems to be ready for prime-time with Android. Could this mean fast & easy virtualized Android instances on other x86 devices running windows as the host OS? (Surface Pro 3, I'm looking at you)

HP plans to launch memristor, silicon photonic computer within the decade

This is really cool news, and it's good HP is setting its sights on bringing new technology to the market. The company lost its way during the Mark Hurd and Leo Apotheker days by slashing R&D and attempting to turn the company into something it isn't. Seeing a return to form is very...

In a world of me-first smart home gear, can smarthubs make them all play nice?

Another part of that guinea pig thing is dealing with the amount of vapor ware that's out there - like the meterplug. I helped fund the project over a year ago and the only thing I've heard over the 7 updates they posted was that they are awaiting UL certification. At this point I consider it...

Introducing Steam Gauge: Ars reveals Steam’s most popular games

Coming from a data analyst and tech geek, it's articles like this why I consider Ars to be the best tech site on the net. I just registered with a premier subscription. Absolutely fantastic work, Kyle.
