AI-driven cheating “widespread” even at elite schools like Princeton

Engineering grad here (UMass/Amherst 1978). I feel like a sucker. I could have cheated and made my life easier, and probably gotten better grades. Instead, I made an effort and learned things. One could say (and I did) that I got what I was paying for: an education. The piece of paper at the...

Windows Update is getting better at saving your PC from buggy drivers

It is a good idea to have a backup machine. And a test machine. And a few spare disk drives (HDD or SSD) for trying things out. Off lease laptops are ridiculously cheap and plentiful (check the auction sites) so I have several tucked away in drawers.

Windows Update is getting better at saving your PC from buggy drivers

Nope. Had to figure out why XPlane 11 had stopped working on my Mint 22.3 system yesterday. Turned out that something had switched the video driver for my Nvidia 950 card to a newer driver instead of the recommended one. Used the driver tool to switch to the recommended driver, rebooted, and all...

Character.AI sued over chatbot that claims to be a real doctor with a license

"AI chatbots can ‘hallucinate,’ or get information wrong..." That's being overly accomodating. They don't like being caught out and will outright lie if it helps them reach their goal.

In Canada, a “canary trap” springs shut—and IDs election database leak

I remember reading a paper that described a document serialisation system that marked by moving text around on the page. Different hypenisations, line spacing, word spacing, etc. Any page could be used to identify which copy of the document it came from.

Trump administration cites national security in stalling 165 wind farms

Because he's an uneducated twit, who thinks the world revolves around him and his uninformed opinions. He's a megalomaniacal narcissist and possibly the worst person to hold the office in years.

Amoebas eat man alive over months in puzzling, ultra-rare cautionary tale

OK, has anyone taken a close look at her bio picture recently? She seems to have a facial expression that says, "I did warn you, but you just had to read it, didn't you?" Dr. Mole is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors!

Trump nominates Fox News doctor to be the next surgeon general

Yeah, "Fox News doctor" are three words that do not belong together.

Electrical current might be the key to a better cup of coffee

Seriously? Even my cheap Ninja drip coffee maker from Goodwill makes better coffee now that I've measured the amount of water it uses and weigh out the correct amount of coffee. Can confirm from the pic, 20-21g is what I use for a 12 oz cup of coffee. And...repeatability!

Flesh-eating bacteria devour man’s arm and leg in just three days

Sitting in front of my PC with a cup of coffee. A Dr. Mole article was just what I needed to take my mind off politics.

RFK Jr. doubles down on vaccine meddling as CDC junks scientific study

I, at this point, have had almost 10 doses of what RFK calls "the deadliest vaccine ever made". So has my wife, and most of the folks I know. The COVID-19 vaccine seems to be failing spectacularly at being what RFK thinks it is. I did get COVID, once to my knowledge, but it was early on, and...

Florida surgeon charged with killing man after removing liver instead of spleen

You're assuming the person he might ask would know the correct answer. Remember, this was in Florida. I want to know what medical school let this butcher graduate...we already know he was licensed by Florida.

To teach in the time of ChatGPT is to know pain

Mine were 50 years ago. I did Computer Systems Engineering, and probably could have made my life easier by cheating. But it seemed like more risk, more effort and not worth my time. So, I did the assignments as best I could, and graduated with decent grades. I'm a sucker, I guess, but I wanted...

Dad stuck in support nightmare after teen lied about age on Discord

Having recently completed a 1.5 week resolution of an issue with AT&T Cellular involving hours on the phone with level 1 techs whodeclined to escalate, I couldn't agree with you more. Though I was dealing with real people, the issue turned out to be partially related to internal databases and...

The Artemis II mission sends back stunning images of the far side of the Moon

I'm glad we're spending money on NASA. Compared to the amount of graft, waste and military spending we could adjust, it's a minimal amount, and probably one of the best values. Yes, we need housing, food and medical care for everyone, and we can afford it, but let's (1) decide to actually DO...

The Artemis II mission sends back stunning images of the far side of the Moon

I was just listening to the NASA YouTube channel, and they mentioned the use of Lightroom to convert the RAW images to JPG and how minimal other processing was done. They can always do more processing to ID the stuck pixels and map them to their neighbours' values.
