Google used AI to block three times more fraudulent advertisers in 2024

It specifically amuses me that you say "that's just the legit ads." I don't often see references to my own situation: Personally, I don't block ads at work -- not for lack of desire, but because my employer manages all software installations on company hardware. That is to say, I'm not allowed...

Google used AI to block three times more fraudulent advertisers in 2024

A good start, perhaps. Now, how long before Alphabet starts tackling that other AI generated ad-money grab that's been infesting their YouTube platform? That is to say: not just ads, but "videos" that are nothing more than an AI generated voiceover commentary accompanied by a vaguely related...

There’s no Mac version of Counter-Strike 2 because there are no Mac players

Not recently, you haven't. The article you just read and commented on was published back in October of 2023, which was shortly before Valve discontinued official native support for CS:GO on the Mac, in January of 2024.

Apple barred from Google antitrust trial, putting $20 billion search deal on the line

Indeed. In fact, I would argue that all of the posters you quoted were actually citing reasons that Apple's users might not care, and misattributing their reasoning to Apple -- which is perhaps to say, they were offering their own reasons for not caring. It is perhaps difficult for some people...

Massive botnet that appeared overnight is delivering record-size DDoSes

The irony herein is that their advice betrays a focus on "litigation mitigation" instead of actual "risk mitigation." Pretty much the entire point of a DMZ is to house network devices that you've decided not to trust. It's somewhat harder to successfully sue a company when their inherently...

Massive botnet that appeared overnight is delivering record-size DDoSes

Based upon the position of that wedge, I'd speculate that it's "Other" which is a combination of all of the countries that are smaller individually than the smallest wedge in the graph. The way it typically works is: starting at the right edge of 12-o-clock is the biggest figure, getting...

Massive botnet that appeared overnight is delivering record-size DDoSes

You would think by now that this is just common sense... and yet, it baffles me just how many people blithely drop their IoT cameras and such onto public IP addresses for all the world to see.

Sergey Brin says AGI is within reach if Googlers work 60-hour weeks

Playing (ahem) Devil's Advocate, here, at least in part... I tend to wonder if perhaps the cause-and-effect relationship might possibly be the other way around. That is to say, what if "getting lucky" and successfully growing a small fledging company into a megacorporation has a natural tendency...

Sergey Brin says AGI is within reach if Googlers work 60-hour weeks

If someone in Brin's position truly believed this "theory", they would advertise that they're hiring, and then hire absolutely every person who walks in the door -- qualified or not -- and they'd find ways to parcel out the job to all of these willing new employees, offering training where...

The PlayStation VR2 will get a drastic price cut, but that might not be enough

Is it weird that I suddenly want to try out Skyrim in VR?

Sergey Brin says AGI is within reach if Googlers work 60-hour weeks

That's the real story; Brin just wants to extract more/better/faster work from his employees by convincing them that it's in their best interest to work for free as much as possible. The more employees that believe him, the more Brin profits on the venture... even if AGI never happens.

Sergey Brin says AGI is within reach if Googlers work 60-hour weeks

True. However, it's often the irrational people who ultimately changes the world... because they refuse to believe it when they're told "That simply can't be done!" (That said... I think perhaps Brin is still more optimistic than I am, about AGI. Maybe that's a good thing.)

The PlayStation VR2 will get a drastic price cut, but that might not be enough

Wishful thinking, much? While Apple's $3,500 price tag on their (now discontinued) headset was certainly eye-wateringly painful, the PSVR2 was far less than that even before this price reduction... and you can only cut costs so much before you find yourself losing money on a product. At the $200...

The PlayStation VR2 will get a drastic price cut, but that might not be enough

For me, No Man's Sky was absolutely amazing in VR -- right up until I discovered how many bugs there were in the interface, which totally destroyed the immersive experience for me. The game itself is still incredible, and is frankly just more fun to play in 2D without all of those bugs marring...

Nothing explains why the Phone 3a Pro ended up with a giant camera

And just to circle around to this prior note... this is not always true. Anecdotally, in some ways I'm probably living pretty close to the worst case scenario, technologically speaking: I used to live in the 'burbs where 5G data flowed as in the land of milk and honey... but now I live in the...

Nothing explains why the Phone 3a Pro ended up with a giant camera

And to that, I will respond: Nobody needs a high end anything. But we all want our stuff to happen faster, we all want nicer cars with all the latest whizzbang features, we all want the comfy first-class seat on the airplane, we all want these luxuries that we can't always afford. It's not...

Nothing explains why the Phone 3a Pro ended up with a giant camera

Certainly... but you can't carry that desktop PC around with you in your pocket. Very different use case. Of course, technology does not stand still: cell phones today eclipse the performance of many older desktops. You may or may not remember this... but in 1999 Apple produced a mildly amusing...

Nothing explains why the Phone 3a Pro ended up with a giant camera

You've prompted my curiosity, kgb999. Can you please indulge me, and check your "Alerts" bell for any indication of this reply? I'm curious as to exactly how much of a technological difference there is between manually BB coding a quote and using the "Quote" button. (For the purposes of this...
