Microsoft rolls out, then pauses, pop-up that asked Chrome users to switch to Bing

You can basically just ask for a key. There’s a tiny script out there somewhere that you can run on an unregistered version of Windows and it’ll ask you what license you want/need then ask Microsoft for it.

BMW uses autonomous cars for boring, repetitive tests

EV’s, and many modern hybrids, have an electrical brake booster. I believe Bosch calls theirs an iBooster (because it was invented in the i-age). It works similar, but can also perform brake by wire by actuating the master cylinder on its own. The way it’s implemented in my Tesla the pedal...

Our big unanswered questions about the switch to Tesla-style EV plugs

That’s a lot of questions that could be answered by looking to Europe - where Tesla has opened a lot of their chargers for non Teslas. 1) The plug in and of itself does not solve anything. Case in point: European Teslas are equipped with CCS2. 1A) However, European, CCS-equipped...

Assetto Corsa: Are PS4 and Xbox One ready for a true driving simulator?

A bit dated now, but: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpWrZEKeuSE Tiff Needell reviews different racing games. Needell is a former racing driver.

    Poll Technica: The engineering survey

    - Slowest survey ever. Had to wait like 30-50 seconds for every page. - WTF is postgraduate degree stuff for people that doesn't live in countries with that system? (Yes, I know how to google, but still difficult to figure out how it compares to my masters degree. What if I hadn't done the...

The troubled history of the foreskin

Some anecdotal humor: When I was in the Royal Norwegian Airforce I heard stories from several of our F-16 pilots who spent two to three years in the US as part of their pilot education, and they all went largely the same: The local women were very fond of the uncircumcised visitors, they...

Why DNS in OS X 10.10 is broken, and what you can do to fix it

Haven't noticed this particular issue like described, but with Mavericks my sister had serious issues with her Mac Mini and AirPort Extreme (kept autoswitching frequencies and lost connection, etc.), so when I tried helping her out I remember coming across this huge thread on the issue. It...

Chinatown tales of an $85 iPhone screen replacement

(Apology up front; couldn't bother to read _all_ of the comments) Is it just me that has a fact-problem with this article? Replacing the screen on an iphone 5, 5s, 5c is easy. Two screws and you're halfway done. Replacing the screen on an iphone 4 or 4s on the other hand does actually require...

Why should passwords be encrypted if they’re stored in a secure database?

I'm a bit shocked that someone with - seemingly - enough knowledge to build a webservice can ask a question like this. First - there's Google. And secondly, when you build something you ought to read up on a bit more than scaffolding. And honestly, if you had asked google that question I'm quite...

Shields up: Tesla Model S gains (free) titanium and aluminum armor upgrade

After the hitch accident Tesla updated the software so that the car would ride higher at motorway speeds (actually - they removed the part where it hunkers down to become more slippery). Second - I don't think the Teslas are going to be much plagued by rust on the battery package (which is what...

Shields up: Tesla Model S gains (free) titanium and aluminum armor upgrade

It's a plastic clip holding parts together. The titanium plate stops intrusion, but as you can see it flexes on impact. Those clips are commonly used in cars and are insanely cheap to replace. If you have such an impact in any car you should obviously have your car checked out.

Windows 8.1 Update 1: More interface concessions that still won’t make people happy

I've been using Windows 8 for a while on my desktop, and as nice as it is to read about upcoming changes in this review, I do feel the author lacks a bit of depth and immagination. Personally I run Win8 on my desktop, which is positioned such that reaching for the power button if I want to...

With new iWork, Apple spotted the problem but declined to fix it

As a long-term Office user I don't see why people are screaming over this. Honestly - Word still isn't good. Yes, the UX is much better now than it was before Office 2007, but mac/windows compatability still is really bad. Having helped people who have written their bachelor thesis in word...

Dell's Linux Ultrabook gets more pixels, European availability

Might have missed, but as far as I could see nobody took notice that Dell thinks that upgrading from 720p to 1080p gives more color saturation and a slight yellow tint on the whole picture: http://i.dell.com/sites/imagecontent/pr ... dule-2.jpg Sadly their illustration of the benefits of 1080p...

More on Fusion Drive: How it works, and how to roll your own

3 pages of posts, TLDR, but this all sounds great obviously :) I also noticed somebody wanting something like this for windows, closest (afaik) is getting a software cache drive (corsair accelerator and such) using NVELO Dataplex. It's a pretty clever system, and doesn't require a...

Microsoft pushes software subscriptions on home users—whether they like it or not

Maybe I wasn't precise enough, but I feel your missing the context a bit. I'm on about the price point for the new consumer version of Windows and Office, the article is about Office. My point is that both Microsoft and Apple sell their productivity software at a higher price than their...

Microsoft pushes software subscriptions on home users—whether they like it or not

Since there's 5 pages of comments (TLDR). The first paged did fail to mention one thing that I've noticed in the recent years (after getting a Mac in the household as well, yes I said Mac, but bear with me for this one). We "all" "know" that cutting the price of software products lead to more...
