“This will be a painful period”: RFK Jr. slashes 24% of US health dept.

This admin is actively trying to harm and kill as many people as possible.

Sam Altman says “we are now confident we know how to build AGI”

"We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it." As we understand what? AGI doesn't actually have a clear, widely agreed upon definition. Of course, then we learn what is "understood" by OpenAI and MS, that "...the firms clarified that 'AGI' will have...

A lot of people are mistaking Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites for UAPs

I mean, those two things aren't mutually exclusive... On topic: we're gonna be seeing so many more breathless social media posts about "ALIENS ARE COMING!!" as the mega constellations grow.

RTO mandates led to “pronounced exodus” of senior workers at top tech firms

This makes me really appreciate my company's work policy: "You want to work in the office? Great, we have snacks! Oh, you want to work from home? Great, enjoy your home snacks - see you on Zoom!" They didn't even hint at asking us to come in after the pandemic restrictions were lifted...

Feds probe Waymo driverless cars hitting parked cars, drifting into traffic

I see Waymo cars all over the city and the ones driving the most erratically are the ones with humans behind the wheel. There's still room for improvement, but these cars are literally the most conscientious, patient and law-abiding wheeled vehicles in SF.

Scientists get first glimpse of samples returned from asteroid

We're hoping that black dust-like material is from Bennu, too! Really looking forward to the updates.

Rocket Lab joins SpaceX in re-flying a rocket engine to space

Congrats to Rocket Lab! It’s amazing how in just a few short years we went from “just throw it away” to “not recovering your rocket is an anachronism.”

Trendy “raw water” source under bird’s nest sparks diarrheal outbreak

Well, not so much unique, but if your definition of a probiotic is "something that makes you poo," campylobacter is a great probiotic... /S

Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan is back and still tending bar in Picard S2 trailer

The Federation didn't seem noble in Picard S1. I mean, a bunch of member worlds threatened to secede due to Picard's proposed rescue mission to Romulus. Actually, now that I think about it, the Federation hasn't really been portrayed as "noble" for a long time...

NASA completes most challenging part of the Webb telescope’s deployment

Bad onions cause Salmonella outbreak in US and Canada, sickening 900

As a verb, mushroom means to spring up suddenly. Outbreaks generally have an element of suddenness. As a noun, it's a fungus, which can also be found in a grocer's produce section, like onions. Get it now?

The Pentagon’s hand-me-downs helped militarize police. Here’s how

The militarization of police in the US has never been about reducing crime. A short hop through history will show why it is done and why it ultimately doesn't work for its intended purpose. It's good that research bears that out.

Game companies delay events, tweet #BlackLivesMatter amid police brutality protests

For the people focused on corporate hypocrisy and the "money money money" angle, look at it this way. These companies, along with many others, have made the decision that they'll see more profit and shareholder value by supporting BLM, equality and justice versus police brutality, ultra...

The first full trailer for Netflix’s new Ghost in the Shell series is here

I can't say I'm impressed by the style or quality of the animation, it looks rather flat and stiff. What really got me was the music - goddamn was that awful. I can only hope it's trailer-only music, but I'm not holding my breath...

Netflix releases first teaser trailer for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045

I think you meant "CGI adaptation of the iconic manga Ghost in the Shell by Shirow Masamune". And, I'm definitely in the underwhelmed camp here. Never really been a fan of Netflix's CGI anime. Here's to hoping the story and voice acting can make up for the styling.

Ars Pro: You can now PayPal us the money!

A question about the Yubikey. I see people here were expecting to have one delivered after going with Pro++. I never received one, either, when I went Pro++, but I did get a coupon to use in the Ars Store for a Yubikey. Was it an either-or thing, or did some subs get a key mailed and others...

Video: The secrets of our first screen names

Nemesis4934 - I've since retired it, but I took it from the Asimov book of the same name and tagged a semi-random set of numbers to it (I thought they made an interesting pattern on my numpad). The one I'm using here I just randomly chose from a Fear Factory song I was listening to when I...
