DNA and jolts of electricity get people to make optimal antibodies

This is simply natural selection at work. Those who are following conspiracy theories of “bad” mRNA vaccines or any treatments that works just simply gets (de)selected.

Backblaze, owner of 317,230 HDDs, says HDDs are “lasting longer”

Ah.. the bathtub curve. Back in the 90s (yeah, I am old), I was writing control apps for ovens that burn-in DRAMs for a company that specializes in getting rid of the early infant mortalities. The ovens steepens the “death” curve, shortening the time for an iffy RAM chip to fail and hence the...

@EricBerger Are there major differences between the US and UK edition of the book besides the cover image?

Third suspect arrested after man was kidnapped and tortured for Bitcoin

Well, if he had given up his creds, he would have ended up “accidentally” falling off the ledge.. Edit: language

Trump administration’s attack on university research accelerates

Meanwhile, China is rubbing her hands in glee - the researchers need to eat and guess who will be preparing a banquet for some of them.

SpaceX has caught a massive rocket. So what’s next?

What a time to be alive! So glad to be able to observe what is possibly the first real step to solar system colonization. I wish this happened 20-30 years earlier but better late and never!!

India is on a path to become the world’s third-largest space power

Well, it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison. Perhaps a more app comparison is what NASA spends on Betchel’s Mobile Transporter alone - also $2.7billion and counting. Edit: fixed link insertion issue.

SpaceX has a license to launch Starship—this time it might fly at dawn

A lot of posters mentioned pumps being used for the microgravity propellant transfer test - wouldn’t a partially-depressurized destination tank help? Some of the propellant will obviously phase-change to gas but wouldn’t you get most of it moved over as a liquid? Just a bit of armchair...

World’s largest space conference succeeds in making a Starship update boring

I almost hope that China lands first in the next few years and set up a base. It will definitely give a big impetus to everyone else to push to do the same. Otherwise there will be a lot of dash lines on the moon map… Edit: language

“How am I in this war?” Book details Musk’s doubts on Starlink in Ukraine

Must is neither stupid or yellow-bellied; he is a “longtermist”. He doesn’t care about the Ukrainians being wronged; he just think he is the hero preventing a thermonuclear war from wiping out humanity. Whether you agree with this ethical philosophy or not, he is acting true to his (IMHO flawed)...

How ChatGPT turned generative AI into an “anything tool”

Thanks, Huang for the article. I find it useful as I now understand a little better on how LLMs can be tuned. Like another poster said, it’s early days and these kind of articles helps to separate the chaff from the real stuff.

US judge: Art created solely by artificial intelligence cannot be copyrighted

Not a lawyer, but this feels like a slippery road… what happens when an AI model discovers a drug that cures cancer? I know this article deals with copyrights but it would seem the arguments can extend to patents?
