The big “alternatives to Google Photos” showdown

A very interesting possibility. People don't pay google. No thank you. Services aren't guaranteed. I mean. If you have a choice between iCloud and Google? I think Google loses this one and sucks up the cost, and we lose Google Photos. That's not to say things like Youtube Premium don't grow...

YouTube now lets you pay $4.99 per month to support your favorite creators

I think this is a good idea, but they need to be flexible in my subscription price. I am willing to chip in a dollar or two per month to some of my channels, but not $5 each month. For $5 a month I think they should throw in youtube red too, and maybe let me allocation a percentage of my...

France seizes France.com from man who’s had it since ‘94, so he sues

So I'm curious at the end of the day, who do you go to if Web.com is uncooperative or unresponsive? Is it the nameserver's responsibility? ICANN? This guy does have an easy legal case against web.com I think. But right now when I do a whois lookup on france.com, it goes to the French tourism...

Windows 10 Game Mode: Free FPS boost of a few percent, with more to come

Yup, and you can even tweak the registry to enable no foreground task boost, or change the time slice to short or long. The advanced setting in My Computer has a simple toggle for server settings which enables fair scheduler settings (with long time slices) rather than giving more time to the...

This low-cost device may be the world’s best hope against account takeovers

I've recently started using the Google Authenticator for my Ubisoft and Battle.net accounts, but I realized it has a flaw. The token seems to be tied to your initial pairing on your smartphone. If I were to change my phone, I don't think I can get that token back without resetting it and using...

This low-cost device may be the world’s best hope against account takeovers

At my university we've started implementing Yubikey for our linux systems (the Windows guys are trying to force us to use a crappy smartcard solution that only works in Windows with drivers and an application). The best thing about the standard yubikey is that it presents itself as a generic...

DOD covered up report that said it could save $125 billion in overhead

Yes, but that's cumulative. The DOD projects to waste 125 billion over the course of 5 years (I'm sure it's higher). I'm not saying fund private colleges. Public is just fine.

DOD covered up report that said it could save $125 billion in overhead

And yet politicians say we can't excuse student debt and provide free college.

Decrypted: I think we’ve got Westworld all figured out now

My problem with the show is the constant replay of the same scene (wasting on screen time) of constant agony. Please writers, just move on with the story already. I was falling asleep Sunday night listening to constant screaming and crying of the same scene(s) I've seen dozens of times now.

The 2016 13- and 15-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pros reviewed

I actually like new MBP keyboard when I tried it in store. I have the 15" Mid 2015 MBP at work, and I prefer the new one. Key travel is low, but they've improved the squishy feel so it's more solid. I was able to type 90WPM on the new one, which is slightly lower that my mechanical keyboard...

Energy drinks may give you wings, but also a DUI—even without alcohol

Thank you! My parents were always on my case about this. People don't realize they are about equivalent to coffee, except for adding vitamins (I drink the sugar free ones).

Amazon wants to challenge UPS and FedEx with its own delivery system

The same happened in San Diego recently with the coming of same day delivery and weekend delivery. My Amazon employee packages get lost or get returned. Seemingly no attempt at delivery is made, and I get no notices posted on my door. They don't have the keys to the community like USPS does...

Amazon wants to challenge UPS and FedEx with its own delivery system

And at least for me they suck compared to the established players. USPS and UPS have keys to my apartment complex, while Amazon doesn't. USPS at least makes the effort since they have to deliver standard mail to my mailbox anyways. And they do quick weekend delivery. With Amazon drivers, it's...

FCC forces TP-Link to support open source firmware on routers

So they are forcing us to use a binary blob for the wireless firmware rather than have the wireless stack be a completely open driver like some previous routers had. I guess it's a compromise, but I know open source developers don't like it. What if there's a firmware bug? You're stuck waiting...

Turn on 5G, turn off old landlines: FCC plans future of phone networks

I agree. When AT&T switched us over to uverse and disconnected the old POTS line, they did include a backup UPS for the modem. However, that was several years ago. I'm sure that battery can't hold any reasonable charge anymore. Yet I don't see them reminding us or sending us a new UPS.

    Wi-Fi gets multi-gigabit, multi-user boost with upgrades to 802.11ac

We're about to order about 1000 of Cisco's new Wave2 AC APs for density reasons. It allows us to put more APs in the same building, yet steer coverage and adjust power levels so they aren't interfering with each other. We already have to shut down our 2.4GHz radios in many locations because of...

Google Fiber’s wireless plans take shape with purchase of a gigabit ISP

They claim it's the same as fiber: https://webpass.net/about_network (I've added a link to the story.) It's actually faster in some cases, because it's line of sight. Fiber has to route around the city in conduits avoiding underground structures and buildings.

Reports: Microsoft preparing multiple Xbox upgrades over next two years

Well they recently stopped production of the 360, so they need a new entry level and cheap console for poorer areas. I can see that role taken by the Xbox 1 with the lowest specs. Or, this new console may be genuinely cheaper even with a new APU since 14nm requires less silicon. And over time...

Reddit forsakes Imgur with launch of native image upload tool

I don't like it one bit. Imgur already works fine in mobile apps like Alien Blue. It's dead simple to use as well, with html5 and drag and drop. And reddit often goes down during times of big news, or gets put into read-only maintenance mode. I don't see how they're going to replicate imgur's...

AMD promises three new gaming processors coming soon—is one for Xbox?

They'll just have to treat them more like PCs, which their fundamental architecture is. PC games manage to scale to variety of systems, spanning years. And it's not as bad as developing for a PC, since you have clearly defined generations of consoles and their capabilities. Apple kind of does...
