AI can rewrite open source code—but can it rewrite the license, too?

Genuine question: if you maintain a GPL codebase that you made yourself, aren't you free to choose your license - as long as it isn't retroactive? So it only affects the new version? (Assuming you don't use other's code that has restrictions on licensing like GPL).

Editor’s Note: Retraction of article containing fabricated quotations

Was thinking of possibly resubscribing after your Conde Nast AI training debacle, but I think I won't after this.

Mass firings at US health dept. partially reversed but still devastating

The competitive areas have been drawn around offices. Which is why entire offices are being deleted. There's no positions to compete for if they are all deleted.

OpenAI signs AI deal with Condé Nast

Just canceled my subscription of 6 years. I appreciate the articles of Ars, and will be happy to resub if things change. But I'm not interested in paying money and still having my data be used to put other people out of jobs. I get you don't really have a say in the matter though.

Framework’s software and firmware have been a mess, but it’s working on them

Tried to install the 3.08 BIOS on my 12th gen framework (from the BIOS page), and it errors out saying it only works on 12th gen boards. Quality!

Agencies using vulnerable Ivanti products have until Saturday to disconnect them

I don't see why any organization that has a big dependency on people having the ability to work remote would want to depend on something that has no guarantee of support. It's the same thing as paying Linux OS maintainers for support of an open source operating system, you are paying for when...

OpenAI employees revolt after board names new CEO and Altman heads to Microsoft

I'm sure developing AI for a capitalist publicly traded company will definitely be done in ways that are safe for humanity. Uh huh.

LastPass says hackers have obtained vault data and a wealth of customer info

I just read the email they sent about this and it's super vague. For an incident of this degree they should include the salient information directly in the email. This 'we have an update on a security incident' BS should sink this company. They're still doing marketing instead of protecting...

Do expensive Nvidia graphics cards foretell the death of Moore’s law?

The article mentions GTX a lot, do you mean RTX? There is no GTX 3080. Moonshark sorry! Moonshark make fix. Moonshark so excited about finally upgrading Moonshark's GTX980 that Moonshark confuse letters.

EA pulls a “reverse Ubisoft,” makes some old BioWare DLC free

Pinnacle Station was ported to the PC version of ME1 Legendary Edition by modders last year: https://youtu.be/HdsX3EcMNHw, which rounds out the SP DLC in Legendary Edition (a few previous comments say it was lost forever). The video includes a write up about how it was done and why it wasn't...

Framework will sell you its laptop motherboard without the laptop for $399

I'm very interested in purchasing a framework laptop to replace my laptop, but I'm not that interested in buying a last-gen intel chip. Give me an AMD APU and I'll be all over it...

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Tests, thoughts, and a 10 am EDT Twitch stream

Looking pretty good. The launcher looks like it has loose assets, so it will be customizable (though not officially).

Chrome 89 brings less RAM use to the desktop, faster launch to Android

I've found that ever since I got Chrome 89 it's been super unstable with videos. I get constant Status Access Violations when I move my mouse over a chrome window when a video is playing, tempted to just dump Chrome altogether because of it. Watching a livestream is nearly impossible.

Sony delists PlayStation version of Cyberpunk 2077, begins automatic refunds

Don't these companies have vetting processes for software? Isn't that part of the submission for these platforms, that they get reviewed for exactly these kinds of problems before they're officially licensed by the platform owner?

Feds issue emergency order for agencies to patch critical Windows flaw

I can't tell from the article if the patches only must be applied to the domain controllers or to all systems. The emails I received from higher up in my organization made it sound like it was all systems, workstation, laptop, local server, DC. This article doesn't really seem to cover what...

Google Pixel 4a review—The simple, basic, reasonable Google phone

I preordered this phone, then google decided to not put it in the box they shipped me. Upon asking why I wasn't shipped my device, they just refunded me (without asking) and said I can order another one, which was a whole month of shipping (which is now like 1.5 months). Wheh asked why they...
