Hands-on: Handwriting recognition app brings sticky notes into the 21st century

Another Apple (and SNL) idea that was just too early for the market: View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q-BH8j06pM

How a stubborn computer scientist accidentally launched the deep learning boom

That is part of it, but there is a reason that in the last few months Google, AWS, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle have all announced plans to start adding nuclear power to their datacenters. As the providers have said themselves, AI is what is driving the extreme need for new power solutions and...

More and more astronomers are eager to use the James Webb Space Telescope

The actuators that align the mirrors are actually really fascinating. They have the ability to reliably align the mirrors in multiple axis with nanometer precision and are way simpler than you'd imagine. The YouTube channel Breaking Taps did a really interesting video where he goes through their...

More and more astronomers are eager to use the James Webb Space Telescope

Fraiser Cain did a really fascinating interview on The Universe Today with Dr. Gerard van Belle about the potential for super-cheap, super-powerful telescope arrays using optical interferometry. I didn't realize just how huge the potential was. It's definitely of the best recent videos I've...

Huawei laptop teardown shows China’s steps towards tech self-sufficiency

Honestly I'm not super worried about them stealing EUV plans from TSMC. TSMC + a huge band of super advanced partners can just barely make those machines function in an economically viable manner. I don't doubt they'll get to EUV eventually if they keep going like this, but with or without...

Samsung recalls 1.1M electric stoves after fires caused injuries, killed pets

Sorry for the long delayed response! It wasn't a galley kitchen but there was an island that made it someone constricted. I also found it happened a good bit when I was reaching up to get something from the cabinets above the stove.

YubiKeys are vulnerable to cloning attacks thanks to newly discovered side channel

Ironically, the only reason I have one of those YubiKeys is because I got one for free from Ars :) Nice to see the exploit reported here too.

AnandTech, mainstay of computer hardware reviews, closes after 27 years

I really miss the detailed reviews they did of each of the new A series processors in iPhones every year. They were fascinating. I learned so much about CPU/SOC architecture from those. Chips And Cheese does a pretty good job, but the AnandTech reviews were a lot more approachable.

Samsung recalls 1.1M electric stoves after fires caused injuries, killed pets

I had one of these in my last apartment and I would constantly turn it on by accident as I walked by. After the first time melting tupperware onto the range I took all of the knobs off except when I was using the stove.

On self-driving, Waymo is playing chess while Tesla plays checkers

I'm not sure there is a lot you could safely do to tag road infrastructure. The possible issues from bad actors could be enormous. If you can hack the environmental data tags there is all sorts of mayhem they could create. I can also see rich communities getting their police to mark the...

Ars goes to the Chicago Auto Show

So I know there are a legion of people staffed with detailing the show cars to a mirror finish. Are there also people employed in making cars look "dirty from intended use"? It seems that after all of the handling needed to get these cars set up they would at least need a touch-up every time...

Dragon Dictate for Mac breaks its "Golden Rule"—and users rejoice

The important question is: Does it re-enable support for John Siracusa's F15 key?

Can we transport food like Internet data? Foodtubes says yes

Someone already posted the one from German in the 30's, but here's a pretty nifty packet switched pneumatic tube network from 1951: http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2006/01/ ... age-tubes/ German food tubes: http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2006/05/ ... -to-homes/ And of course New York used to...

Poll Technica: how many monitors do you use?

I had been using 2x24" for the last few years, but recently I bought a new computer and along with it an ATI Radeon 58xx video card. The new ATI cards allow you to have three monitors on a single card. Well actually six, but that one is a bit pricey. I bought a third 24" a few weeks ago and I...
