I think I'd rather have the history without the music than have the music play in background, behind the talking. Because then I always want them to stfu and play the music already!

Coyote vs. Acme is finally getting released—with a killer trailer

A local TV station ran a piece today on some of the New Mexico connections shown in the trailer. Should be fun and interesting.

    The mild annoyances thread!

Canonical's Ubuntu update servers are crap this morning, confirmed at downdetector. I worry about failed updates bricking one or more of my systems - which would NOT be a minor annoyance.

Not usually my style but I do love a few of their songs. I have a couple of their albums as mp3s. All around my hat is great, an ear worm and a favorite for sure. Here's the official video, which runs about a minute short of the album version. Still nice, though! View...

    The mild annoyances thread!

Aaaand - they fixed it! A day later, I got another update: "EXIF/IPCT/XMP metadata mainipulation"

    The mild annoyances thread!

I had two Ubuntu Desktop systems harmed by an update to an "EXIF manipulation ..." something-or-other. Those words in quotes were the only words I managed to actually see as updates were running. I didn't realize until later that it caused gimp to fail to open image files. (I could paste in an...

But the Ars store closed some time ago, perhaps that's why it isn't on the list. Maybe it's a "brand" but without a store.

I first read that as "harassed by this effing bard" and wondered where you were working and why poets would be so competitive.

Weird scrolling behaviour with a list in an article

FWIW, on my Ubuntu Desktop system, in Firefox 147.0.4 (non-snap version), it depends on the zoom level. I saw the scrolling behavior until I increased the zoom level, then it stopped. It probably has to do with how the site's CSS is used for lists - I see 'li aria-level="1"' for example, not...

Waddaya mean I can't run or install tarceroute? I already did that and I use it all the time! Stupid computer.

/Banana Republish Seriously (?), I take then through checkout naked (the bananas, not me) and put 'em in one of my reusable grocery bags, as usual, as with with everything else. Bananas can be handy to keep bottles and cans from clanking.

My Pixel 6 does that, in the messaging app at least. I spend a lot of time backspacing and editing. It's incredibly annoying.

Things you just watched on netflix/streaming video...spoilers all over the joint...

An interesting family. There was also The Hatred, from 2018. the first (only?) one of theirs that I saw. The wife and mother isn't in it, just the dad and two daughters. It runs just under an hour. I kinda liked it, but don't see it streaming anywhere right now or I'd watch it again.

    Linux and wi-fi: terrible/erratic bandwidth

Sorry to hear that. That tweak isn't really meant for overall and consistently slow speeds - it was for intermittency caused by the OS sometimes powering down the WiFi adapter. I had pings to 1.1.1.1 jump from under 20mS to over 200 or 300 mS, up and down erratically like that before doing this...

    Linux and wi-fi: terrible/erratic bandwidth

I've had the flaky WiFi problem on a couple of Ubuntu Desktop systems with internal adapters - not sure this will apply to USB adapters, but.... WiFI power management can be turned off, with a setting that doesn't seem to be exposed in any settings GUI. In a terminal window: sudo nano...

    eMail Hosting for personal domain

I long since moved from gmail to Proton mail for almost everything, and it's fine on my phone and in a desktop browser (Ubuntu Desktop and Firefox exclusively these days). But I haven't set it up to host mail at my personal domain. I'm curious about how that works. To get your normal Proton mail...

Things you just watched on netflix/streaming video...spoilers all over the joint...

I really liked Monolith (Tubi, Prime and other sources) and have watched it several times. It seems to get meh reviews, but I gave it 7 of 10. It's a sci-fi mystery/conspiracy/psychological thriller. Lily Sullivan is great as an unfairly disgraced journalist, exiled to podcasting, searching for...

    Conde Nast Password Breach

You might try the Help & Feedback area. Staffers may be more likely to see things there. If it's big, they may already know, and there may have been internal communications about it.

An article at NPR linked me to an interesting list of works entering the public domain in 2026. It should be interesting to see how many characters and properties get new treatments.
