    True-Wireless, Open-Air Earbuds

If you aren't in a hurry, you might want to wait a little, Samsung is rumored to be entering the market: https://www.sammobile.com/news/samsung-launch-wireless-open-ear-bone-conduction-headphones-soon/

I threw away Audible’s app, and now I self-host my audiobooks

I've been using ABS for a very long time, and having just started listening to podcasts, I can say it's decent. It's not perfect, there are some oddities, but it's much better than trying to use Plex/Emby/JellyFin, which are just too far out of their core competencies to do it well. I've...

FS: Surface Pro 4 + Accessories

Surface Pro 4, i5, 8GB memory, 256GB storage. Includes Surface Stylus, 2 chargers, and a Surface Dock 2. The keyboard is one for a Surface Pro X as I recall, bigger touch pad I think, but not one with the finger print reader, and is red. All accessories are Microsoft OEM, not 3rd party...

It took a year, but Gwyneth Paltrow figured out how to exploit the pandemic

As far as I'm concerned, the only Cole Protocol that matters is the one that keeps the Covenant from finding Earth.

What may cause a SATA III 6Gbps to run at SATA I 1.5Gbps?

Is it the only connected disk? If it's not, try disconnecting all the other disks and see if it's able to go full speed then. I know if you have a port multiplier in there (doesn't sound like you do), that you will be limited to the speed of the slowest disk connected.

Slow boot, certain disk operations slow

Will test and post update. I seem to have gotten the boot time back to normal, while poking the uefi settings. I didn't think I changed anything substantially though. I'll have to double check the settings there. But my bios time is now down to 7 seconds, so that's good. Accessing disk...

Slow boot, certain disk operations slow

Ok, so this has been happening a long time, but I've finally decided to get around to doing something about it. My daily driver machine is pretty long in the tooth these days, but it shouldn't be experiencing slowness like this, and it didn't used to. So gear-wise, it's an i5 quad core...

    Fictional Starship comparison

I swear I remember seeing it in some of the older ones. Huh.

    Forward HTTPS to another server

Yeah, it took me a few days to get my setup upgraded from v1 to v2. Docker was really nice for that though, letting me switch between the two versions easily, so I didn't have to just be offline forever until I migrated successfully. I don't know that I think of it as any more abstract than v1...

Nothing. And no video evidence exists to prove otherwise.

College contact-tracing app readily leaked personal data, report finds

It wasn't called out in the article, but some other people in the comments mentioned it. The social commentary is relevant, of course, but it's really important when considering the "can they do that" side of things, to note that Albion is a private school; as I recall, it's specifically a...

to NAS or not to NAS (formerly: help me select a DAS/NAS on a budget)

Super late replies, but I wanted to close the loop up a little... Yeah, I'm sure it's fine in a RAID1/RAID0 style configuration (actually the RAID0 configurations used to be HORRIBLE if you had a disk failure, like more bad than actually RAID). The RAID5 style (parity checked) configuration is...

Always read the fine print? GM Super Cruise only free for three years

Is OnStar more reliable or magically has less latency than a standard cell connection? There are ways to achieve this that consumers already have and pay for, which they could use without charging for it. It's completely reasonable to say "if you have no active Internet connection that has less...

Change .URL to open with notepad or disable it entirely

I'm trying to figure out how to change something that's been annoying me recently. .URL files...there doesn't seem to be a way to force them to open with anything other than a browser, at least not easily. I'm going to look into just editing the registry entries associated with the extension...

Android version of popular Dark Sky weather app shuts down

I've often read (at Ars even?) that the forecasting models outside the US are much better than what NOAA/NWS uses. Does anyone know if there are any apps that use those/does any place apply said models to US weather?

Android version of popular Dark Sky weather app shuts down

Yeah, that's my understanding of how Dark Sky worked so well. It used barometric (and other?) data from users (you could opt out, as I recall it asked you if you wanted to provide it...I've had it installed for so long I don't remember) to give the hyperlocal forecasts.

Android version of popular Dark Sky weather app shuts down

I just uninstalled Today Weather, because they want a subscription to see _radar_. I don't mind subscribing to a good product, I paid for Dark Sky. I'll pay when/if I find a good replacement. But asking to pay for something so basic...nope, don't wanna support that product.

    Name that movie 2020 edition

Some more correct ones for Magus` Nope! I got a PMd guess on 12 of Annabelle:Creation, but it's not that! Sorry if I didn't respond to every guess individually, I have been checking all the posts, everything is current, so if I didn't respond to your guess, it wasn't the right movie.
