Ars Asks: Share your shell and show us your tricked-out terminals!

Yup, this works for a true jump (bastion) host. I was more talking about having a host where I can leave long running shells with work in them and even if I get disconnected, I'm not losing that work or context nearly as easily.

CATL’s new LFP battery can charge from 10 to 98% in less than 7 minutes

Thanks for this, reinforces my desire for induction when I get a new stove.

Ars Asks: Share your shell and show us your tricked-out terminals!

And oh yeah... colors. I play crawl inside SSH sessions, and it sucks when the default blue is so dark I can't read it on a black background. So using colors is hard at times, I want them to be bright and readable. So normally I just don't use colors much at all because sometimes the defaults...

Ars Asks: Share your shell and show us your tricked-out terminals!

I've been using the CLI since around 1986 when I got to college and started using VT100s to access our school's DEC-20 system. I had used my C64 and a 300 baud modem to access "Electronic NY" way back in the days too... so I think I've been a CLI user for a long long time. While I can...

More than just an SUV? Rivian is working on more R2 variants.

I actually like carplay because at least it's a consistent interface from car to car. The damn apps might change, but I can bring that semi-muscle memory between my car, the wife's car and the kid's cars without too much trouble. It's not perfect, but it's not terrible. And yes, you might...

As NASA eyes lunar base, there’s still much learn about landing on the Moon

We haven't even demonstrated being able to land in the same area consistently either. And if we do the Lunur LEM style, we will be littering the moon with base stages. LOL! We need a moon pickup truck to deliver stuff, and ideally one that we can leave for extended times on the moon and still...

More than just an SUV? Rivian is working on more R2 variants.

With all the push back on touchscreen controls, and some automakers rolling them back, it will be interesting to see how Rivian handles this. My Subaru Outback from 2024 has a honking big screen in the center with alot of touch screen to use, but alot of the basic controls are still physical...

CATL’s new LFP battery can charge from 10 to 98% in less than 7 minutes

I grew up on gas stoves, but have been using electric for the past 30 years. I still miss the "instant" heat adjustment of gas stoves. My next stove will be an induction range, even if I have to replace a bunch of pots. And my wife will be happy since she won't have to remember to turn down...

Internal emails show how Amazon raises prices across the Internet, lawsuit says

Break amazon into four... split AWS into four new names... let them compete.

Robot runner handily beats humans in half-marathon, setting new record

It would be nice if we had actual race results and more of a discusion on the power packs used for these robots. Were they battery powered? Some sort of engine? Steam powered (clanks!) or some combination? And how much power did they have when they got done, and how beat up were they...

Errant upper stage spoils Blue Origin’s success in reusing New Glenn booster

I would suspect that any of these "locked down" insurance policies include language which says that if there is a failure of types x, y, or z in the next n launches, the cost will either increase, or the value of coverage will decrease in response. The people doing the underwriting aren't...

Trump picks qualified, normal health leader to head CDC; experts still cautious

Which makes me wonder why she accepted this nomination and didn't tell Trump and his staff to buzz off? What is her plan? I wish her well, I really do since she seems qualified and has leadership experience. But ... can she put up with Kennedy? Or is she playing the long game of making him...

With Orion still flying, NASA is nearing key decisions about Artemis III

Artemis needs to hit higher launch cadences first

NASA’s Moon ship and rocket seem to be working well, so what about the landers?

Neither Blue Origin or SpaceX will have their HLS systems ready in two years. Mostly because even though Artemis II is going well, it's still not over and they haven't even decided what Artemis III missions will be? What...? Gah... it's all so silly.

Rocket Report: Russian megaconstellation takes off; Isar preps for second launch

Re Vulcan: I think this shows why SRBs are a bad idea. You can't really test them without a full launch, since you can't only use them once. They're too expensive to test extensively to see how the manufacturing variations will affect performance and reliability. Vulcan's choice of SRBs is...

Which of these two arcades is the “world largest”—and does it matter?

The US Senate empowers NASA to fully engage in lunar space race

ISS Is going to get extended to 2040 at least in my opinion, this is just the first small step since I don't see VAST or any of the other space stations flying anytime in the next four years in any meaningful way.

Rocket Report: Neutron launch date is delayed again; Vector Launch is back—sort of

ULA is dead in my mind. They have a throw away booster, with no reuse possible. They have low capacity without the solid rocket boosters, which are not known to be flaky, to be generous. Vulcan itself is durable, the BE-4s look to be ok, but only time will tell. So Vulcan-0 has approx 10t to...

TCL to gain majority ownership over Sony’s Bravia TVs

I've got a Sony LCD TV (42") which is 17 years old and still works fine. I want it to die so I can justify a new one which is also bigger and better display... but why replace something that still works just fine? And I was planning on spending the money on a Sony Bravia for my next one...
