I almost exclusively buy my steel from local scrap yards. Saves me a LOT of money and often I'll find cut-offs that are right (around) the right size for my projects.

I've seen some folks mention making their own fences (or highly modifying their existing) with success. The fence on my table saw is sketchy too, but I'm not giving up hope. Looks like I need to find an old craftsman to bug about it soon. :)
