Perpetual DIY thoughts, musings, learnings, and small projects

My son and I just bought ourselves a Bambu P1S with an external AMS. We've shelved the old Ender 3 (which I upgraded quite a bit throughout its 3 year lifespan) and plan to do something 'fun' with it some day... Maybe tiny form factor laser etcher/cutter... ? Seems possible. There's a kit...

I almost exclusively buy my steel from local scrap yards. Saves me a LOT of money and often I'll find cut-offs that are right (around) the right size for my projects.

Farm, Garden, Ranch and Homestead : Makers au Naturel

I don't think I've ever seen a bunny (baby or otherwise) waltz! As animals go, I'd always thought they were more of the hopping variety. :sneaky: ;)

Farm, Garden, Ranch and Homestead : Makers au Naturel

I had thought of trying Tilapia, but they don't grow well in my USDA zone (NW Oregon) without using a greenhouse or some other structure to keep them warm enough. Oh well. I like trout. :)

Farm, Garden, Ranch and Homestead : Makers au Naturel

I had to take a big step back from my aquaponics rig after killing off all my fish two years ago (carp species). It was a test run anyway. No huge loss. I learned from it. . I'm roughly 75% done with building a new fish pond that's much much larger than my older watering trough tank. . In the...

    Smart Home Automation

    |Sorry for the TL;DR if it's already been posted. Just stumbled upon this thread| . Are the home-automation systems like some of those discussed here still fraught with security vulnerabilities like they were a few years ago?

A few friends of mine and I recently pitched in and hired a local Community College shop teacher (another mutual friend) to teach us how to weld PROPERLY* *we'd been doing it improperly, with mixed results for many months and figured it was time to stop sucking as bad as we were at it. One...

Any other model railroaders on Ars?

Heya. Nice thread. And, nice job on the setup, Paul. I've still got my Lionel train kit I inherited from my dad. He played with it when he was little (1940s - 1950s) I think it's the O-gauge setup. I sometimes bring it out at Christmas to run around the tree and entertain the cats. Good times...

What to do with these 100+ leftover USB Flash Drives

OK. Thanks for all the ideas guys. I pulled one of them out of the packaging and turns out they're only 2GB each, but I actually have 150 of them. I could definitely donate them to a school. I'll look into erasing them all and getting that coordinated. If you more ideas, keep em coming. :D

What to do with these 100+ leftover USB Flash Drives

. K. I worked for a marketing company for entirely too long. We created some USB flash drive marketing pieces for one of our clients (a now defunct hedge-fund company that's umm... closed down). So, I can clean up the drives, and do SOMETHING with them. I have a 25 port USB copy hub at my...

Building a Better Carhole (Perpetual New Shop Thread)

I had intended on being more active in this thread. It's been a VERY busy Summer. I'll work on putting together some images if there are those interested, but here's a summary of what I've worked on (in the shop and around the homestead) since my last few posts here... I think I'm missing some...

That's awesome! Where did you buy the paddle switch? I'm always fumbling with the kill switch on my table saw. If you posted it and I missed it. Sorry.

Nice work! Love the exposed dovetail details you included in there. The grey cat detail is particularly cute. :D ~ c

I've made my own 2x6 I-beams out of 1/2" and 3/4" CDX. Pretty straight forward to make. Dado cut into the 3/4" to accept the 1/2" CDX, glue, clamp and air-nail it all together. Replace 1/2" with 3/4" if it still feels weird. Is that what you're trying to do? The green dimensional lumber you're...

I think a cyclonic dust collector helps save the shop-vac style filter from getting too beat up. Right? The sites I've seen that are trying to sell the cyclonic filter doo-dads tell you they remove anywhere from 99% to 99.9% of the icky bits. So, that's GOTTA help. :D I just want to make my...

Building a Better Carhole (Perpetual New Shop Thread)

I've seen some folks mention making their own fences (or highly modifying their existing) with success. The fence on my table saw is sketchy too, but I'm not giving up hope. Looks like I need to find an old craftsman to bug about it soon. :)
