    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

So... I'm not sure how she managed, but my friend did ... forget her password. I also don't know how she got there, but at some point during her attempts she got a message about the drive being encrypted. She had backups on an external so fortunately she didn't lose everything, and she's back in...

RAM shortage chaos expands to GPUs, high-capacity SSDs, and even hard drives

I had to look for cheap USB thumb drives earlier today. Hit the wrong button on the site of one of the big general warehouses and got the most expensive first. I realised my error but I had the time to notice the price of the 3rd prize or so winner: over 1660€!! In this case a 1 or 2Gb drive...

RAM shortage chaos expands to GPUs, high-capacity SSDs, and even hard drives

Well, yes ... for desktop machines and maybe a handful of select and (once) very expensive laptops(?)

RAM shortage chaos expands to GPUs, high-capacity SSDs, and even hard drives

I guess I'm getting (too) old, but for me, technological progress has sucked for a while now (to think that I've held off from SSDs for a very long time)... Over here I'd say the difference is marginal if not inexistent or even reversed, at least for the 1Tb drives I've been looking at. And...

RAM shortage chaos expands to GPUs, high-capacity SSDs, and even hard drives

Me: Can you tell me the cheapest price for a glass of water? It: Sure. Before you asked, that was 29.99. Now, because of your question, it's up to 35.55. Prosit!

RAM shortage chaos expands to GPUs, high-capacity SSDs, and even hard drives

Haven't read through the entire thread, but yeah, I was already wondering why the WD SA500 1Gb SATA SSDs I bought for less than 90€ in december '23 now go for about 250€ a piece, and a 250Gb Kingston SU500 that went for 33€ back then now costs almost 3x that. I fear that's not just the prices...

Bridging PipeWire to PulseAudio (yes, the "wrong" way around!)

Well, yes, I'm looking for a way to get applications to think they're talking to PW while in reality they're talking to Pulse. For that it would presumable have to link to libpulse and AFAICT from the sources, it doesn't... (then again, it also doesn't raise an error if it can't find PipeWire...

Bridging PipeWire to PulseAudio (yes, the "wrong" way around!)

But that's a patchbay for PipeWire, doesn't it require to have the PW daemon running?!

Bridging PipeWire to PulseAudio (yes, the "wrong" way around!)

Hi, Remember that old Apple slogan, "Think Different"? Well, I guess that's me :) I have a system running an older distro that I keep up-to-date with self-built packages, mostly installed in a parallel prefix. It runs a recent PulseAudio daemon which actually works fine for me (I even got it...

    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

Oh, this was about the initial post? I could no longer edit it so couldn't check if it had colour codes in it. Thing is, I didn't ask for them, and cannot see any setting in the my control panel that would be responsible for them...

    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

That looks more like you are somehow getting the dark theme (and something is wrong with that). I'd ask if you have a browser extension that enforces black text, but that's probably not possible on an iOS device so it can't be that...

    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

Yeah, it looks that way. And I guess that didn't make sense back when you could just remove the drive from the computer... This is someone who really could have done without the extra expense, so indeed, my 1st suggestion had been to just find a cheap 2nd hand external screen and a keyboard...

    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

I vaguely recall complaining at some point that I found the default theme hard to read, but that could have been on a different site - or it was about this reply editor. As you can see, it uses text that appears to be rather dark-grey than black, on a grey background, and I'm not inserting any...

    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

I hope that article is accurate because the other I found on the same site mentioned that you need a TB cable starting with OS 11 : https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mchlp1443/mac I only have a 2011 Mac that I keep under 10.9.5, AFAIK it doesn't require a login to use Rec. Mode...

    MacBook Air 13" M1 (2020) target mode?

A friend of mine dropped her 2020 13" MBA M1 and broke the screen. Given the prices of repairing that here in Europe, the most economical option was to order an identical replacement from the same refurbished-devices vendor with a contract to send the broken one back after transferring the...

Network players that don't duplicate features already available in any decent modern amp?

Ah, those MS "storage pools" don't work well? The Linux would be the way to go, indeed. FWIW, I've been using ZFS root for about 15y now, but using an ext4 /boot. Last year or so I verified that this also works with Devuan (I moved an actual full-btrfs install to a /boot(ext4)+/(ZFS)...

Network players that don't duplicate features already available in any decent modern amp?

FB2k v1 runs fine under the 32bit Wine 4.0 install I currently have installed from a WineHQ package. But it'll only play to the default (PulseAudio) output device; the WASAPI emulation doesn't work. In other words, I have no idea what happens in that playback chain and doubt it'll be...

Network players that don't duplicate features already available in any decent modern amp?

A bit by accident I stumbled across this mini "NAS PC": https://www.gmktec.com/products/intel-twin-lake-n150-dual-system-4-bay-nas-mini-pc-nucbox-g9 : N150, 1 64Gb eMMC and space for 4 M.2 NVME drives I was actually looking for a NAS that could replace my Time Capsule which also serves as a hub...

Ripping a personal copy of a DVD+CD album to MP4 ... from which source?

No idea, I'm not aware that I'm doing that (the text I'm typing now is darkish grey on light grey which is also not very easy to read).
