X office raided in France’s Grok probe; Elon Musk summoned for questioning

There's truth to this, but I'd also add that in my experience of living and working around the world, I've yet to find a culture that fetishises power and money as much as the US does (esp. that weird undercurrent of "if you're poor, that's a moral judgement on you as a human")

Oh god, don't even joke about that shit...

This is the oldest evidence of people starting fires

Nah, we definitely didn't invent fire, you're good ;) But we definitely invented gravity.

This is the oldest evidence of people starting fires

Really? All this time and still I'm the first to make the lazy East Anglia - Neanderthals joke? This wouldn't happen on The Register :D

When “no” means “yes”: Why AI chatbots can’t process Persian social etiquette

Came to say the same thing - what the article describes as "western" codes as "american" to this brit. Just within europe there'd be a very wide variation of norms, but many would regard the example of "thanks, I worked hard for it" as odd, perhaps even over-prideful. (And judging by earlier...

    403 forbidden in Singapore

Relieved to find this post (while on a VPN, obviously!) Had originally thought Ars was just down over the weekend, but experimented with VPN yesterday, and realised it was more local. Had assumed some innocuous article had been POFMAd (hey, it happens to Bloomberg, too), but thanks for the...

Civilization VII preview: A new age dawns for this decades-old 4X series

Like a lot of ppl on here it seems, started with Civ 2. Have loved every version since then, and (for me) have incorporated the game changes each time to the point where $LATEST_VERSION is the one I play. I love VI, and am excited about VII. We've had big gameplay changes before, and (so far)...

“Pained by having let you down”: Sonos apologizes for app failures

it definitely begins with a 'C', but that's not the word I was thinking of.

“An absolute mess”: Google seemingly ignores hundreds of Fitbit complaints

Yup, did exactly the same (and got all my data deleted by Fitbit*) and am very happy I moved - wish I'd done it earlier. *At least, I completed the procedure in order to have my data deleted, who knows what actually happened on their servers...

Leaked logo points to imminent Civilization VII announcement

Same same. 5 was great, and I have been playing 6 since it became current version. Have played since 2, and have loved them all. Resigned myself to shrugging my shoulders at "6 IS DOGSH!T" persistence - it's up there with "Lars is a sh!t drummer" as a tiresome negative meme... YMMV, of course.

Microsoft and IBM release source code for one of the weirdest versions of MS-DOS

Exactly the memory this lovely wash of DOS nostalgia brought back for me! Ending up with multiple versions of the 2 files, and writing a little script to select between them, depending which game you were trying to get running. (Pretty sure that was DOS5, guided by the Norton Book, but +/- 1 is...

It’s cutting calories—not intermittent fasting—that drops weight, study suggests

Despite multiple months visiting/working in US, the typical portion size over there staggers me. Yes, some will take part home as leftovers, but to me it feels like part of the normalisation of "massive portion = normal portion". Anecdotally, at least, despite having broadly similar diets...

Cisco warns of large-scale credential compromise attack that’s likely to get bigger

Came here looking for this response, was not disappointed. (Also, pleasing not to see it on Cisco's list...)
