A mysterious and maddening hum is tormenting residents of this Canadian city

Interesting story, interesting discussions. I grew up in that area on the Canadian side. I can say for sure that geography is quite interesting, it is earth quake prone and being flat sounds travelled quite far. For example when we were growing up we would get notices in our little town about...

A whole new world: Ars reviews the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Seconded. I was blown away to see something so familiar yet so foreign in an online review. It's foreign because I'm lazy and VNV is only thing I have on my captivate yet foreign in that most reviews include more mainstream bands for their pictures. To the author, were you able to make to...

Activision's <em>Skylanders</em> erases the line between toy and video game (e3 Embar

forgive my naivety but how do you actually play the game? I assume you put the toy on this portal piece then control the character using the controller? Or is there someway to control the character in the game using the toy piece?

<em>Modern Warfare 3</em> vs. <em>Battlefield 3</em>: the difference is in the PC

I have been trying and trying to get into Bad Company 2 and I just can't. I've completely given up on the boring to me single player campaign, i guess i'm maybe 20 to 30% through it, hard to tell where exactly, I just had to retrieve something from a downed satellite. Anyway just find it...

<em>Ghost Recon</em> goes free-to-play, fails to make case for itself

I assume they meant the original Ghost Recon. Which in my mind is still a great game. I still play it to this day. When i was playing Crysis and I was sneaking around forests and fields and what not I had a lot of fun because it specifically reminded me of my days playing Ghost Recon.

Big data meets big storage: an in-depth look at Isilon's scale-out storage solution

Check out Dell's EqualLogic offering that is the most direct competitor to this stuff. The equallogic stuff is pretty cool stuff too, seems to be target at smaller businesses. http://www.equallogic.com/

It's unfinished, but we definitely want more: Ars reviews RIM's PlayBook

After using the Swype keyboard functionality on my Galaxy S phone I can say with certainty that any tablet that doesn't include Swype is useless. Swype is the answer to touch screen entry.

Windows browsers benchmarked: October 2010 edition

@squidz: What are you smoking? It's minimalistic interface is exactly why I'm using Chrome. Speed being the second. Chrome shows only what is needed, no unnecessary waste of space, has every functionality within reach without any keyboard use. What's not to like? Maybe every function that you...

Netflix on PS3 gets 1080p, adds 5.1 surround, loses the disc

Rogers limits what we can download so I have to actually scale back my movies so that I don't burn through my monthly data cap in 4 movies. 1080p just makes my wallet bleed, I sure hope that we can downgrade movies to 480p or 720p and save some bandwidth.

Mono 2.8 released with full support for C# 4.0

Ok i'll bite, that does look cleaner to me. I'd rather have that open up then a 10000+ line mess. I would rather drill down to what I am looking for then complete code diarrhea on the screen.

Read Kindle book samples right on the Web, sans software

WTF?? I just checked the prices they want for e-books. $9.99 who in their right minds are paying that much for essentially a PDF with DRM added? I love the idea of an e-book but at that price point that is insane. I bet the author doesn't make more then a few cents on the purchase too. I...

Playing <em>Halo: Reach</em> on Xbox Live: how to stay sane

Voice chat is actually very useless as a gaming tool, as we can see it is very easily exploited that most gamers don't use it (global mute, mute but friends, etc). So it really isn't a solution to a problem, just another problem seeking a solution. The problem it set out to solve is how to...

    Anyone deployed VMWare View?

I was looking at the equal logic SAN for the back end. I would just need a PXE network card that could boot it. We have Dell optiplexes across the board so I gotta figure out if they can boot it. What type of OS licensing would be needed then? Windows 7 is what we would be using. In your...

Comments on setting up a quick and dirty secure external facing website? Sharepoint?

I'm assuming though that you don't want to do any programming just want to use built in tools to deliver content? I would use something like dotnetnuke (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/ ) over sharepoint. That's a personal preference though when it comes to stuff like this I don't there is a right...

    Anyone deployed VMWare View?

I'm curious how it actually works on the desktop itself. Does the client machine network boot the VM on the server? or does the client machine require an OS that boots then starts the VM? Their documentation isn't very clear.

ISVs - Bad habits on servers and how to deal with them. Always logged in desktop app

Right now the problem I am dealing with is they require their "Server" program to be installed on the server but you have to have the Windows server logged in at all times with this basically client program running. To make matters worse they require the account that is logged in to be the...
