We've located the reality distortion field, and it's in the consumer's brain

Mind if I asked what kind of job you have and if you enjoy it? Surprisingly though, that's not how most people would determine what a "good" purchase is. How about how it makes you feel for example? You could still have a high CRT score and be receptive to more information but still make a...

Apple complies with UK ruling, proclaims Samsung's design "not as cool"

Precisely. Again the voting continues to be a big eye opener into the quality of commenting community at Ars. While I can't 100% rule out a legal reaction to the statement, throwing out phrases like "contempt of court" isn't insightful. A look at the Wikipedia entry...

Apple CEO Tim Cook: iPad mini "not a compromised product like 7-inch tablets"

Personally I'm glad Tim addressed the iPad Mini size. I hardly see his comments vs what Steve said as nitpicking. It's quite clear Steve never said a smaller device was out of the question. He was quite specific, a 7 inch device wasn't appropriate. Given the differences in real estate, how...

Apple joins the fray: A survey of the 7-inch tablet scene

Unsurprising comment in the context of a tech blog where the emphasis on hardware specs doesn't jive with real world use and perception. Tim even highlighted the emphasis on the combination of software and hardware driving the value behind Apple's offerings. For the general public, I still...

Android apps used by millions vulnerable to password, e-mail theft

I wasn't suggesting that a burden of proof needed to be presented before anyone could take that account and make use of it. Nor did I suggest that it should be dismissed on those grounds, or any other. Rather, its puzzling that someone who decides on his own accord not to put much stock into...

Android apps used by millions vulnerable to password, e-mail theft

Wow, is the voting here really representative of Ars? Putting forward that while someone's reasoning and theory appears sound, even acceptable but without proof or some method to substantiate the claim, its at best a well reasoned theory not absolute fact is greeted with down votes?

<i>Haunts</i>' Kickstarter failure highlights the risks of crowdfunding

I wasn't aware of the legal requirement from Kickstarter. WIth that in mind, I find it surprising that any entrepreneurial business venture would choose that venue. A legal requirement not to fail? Failure is part and parcel of the whole enterprise.

Comment voting now shows the vote split!

If you erroneously vote a comment, can it be undone? In my experience, if a post is at 0, if you upvote it and then try to remove your vote by a down vote, it doesn't return to 0 but to -1. Is this correct? Intended? Likely to change?

Xbox Music officially announced for Windows 8, iOS, and Android

You know how about talking about this a bit differently. What do you think Microsoft should have done differently? What about this announcement do you wish as a WP7 user, do you feel you should get that you don't have?

Xbox Music officially announced for Windows 8, iOS, and Android

Please feel free to articulate how they won't be supporting Zune users. Seems that a few users have tried to show that nothing's been lost for existing users in the transition. Apart from the ad-supported music streaming, this is but a name change as far as current users are concerned.

Apple puts money where its mouth is, pays for Swiss railway clock design

While I don't buy into that story because I have no evidence to support it, if a deal had been done before hand there wouldn't have been any brouha and SBB won't have made a statement and this would have been a non starter.

Apple puts money where its mouth is, pays for Swiss railway clock design

Is this even factual? Oh my bad. I get it now. Its a joke. Oh wait, its that same joke we've heard for almost a year that incidentally isn't congruent with what's going on in this case. Is the internet still laughing about that? Here I thought my peers had moved on and the more dutiful ones...

    Comment voting working, getting expanded

I don't think they have the system set up on the forums section yet (or a confirmation they will do it for sure).

    Comment voting working, getting expanded

In bizzarro world I would flippantly say "balance ≠ design". :D But I guess what's you've said is a fair shake. On a side note, is it possible to get a trifecta? Have the Ars Staff badge that's get editor's pick and reader's fav?

    Comment voting working, getting expanded

But that's exactly what destroys a good commenting community. As was clear in the article, several posts often get down voted because of people merely piling on. There was a hilarious example where someone criticized an aspect of the article on Apple getting patent happy after the incident...

    Comment voting working, getting expanded

My recommendation: Please hide vote counts. The quantitative aspect affects voting patterns and reading patterns which are not necessary to achieve the results of getting comments fairly rated. Let individual users see how their personal posts get voted though. It diminishes "I'm voting up...

Alternatives to Camera app can give you better iPhone photos

Wow, some of the skeuomorphic designs here are atrocious. Why can't some of these devs re-envision a camera interface suited for a touch screen?

Creative pushed Steve Jobs to armor up for the smartphone patent war

I did make a recommendation to hide vote counts to prevent piling on and quantitative bias. That kind of voting will only be amplified when the threshold for downranking or highlighting a post becomes known. Hide vote counts except for each person's individual posts. You can see how much...
