Congress fails to pin down oil company execs on their bad faith arguments

Large institutions (like corporations) ALWAYS have more power than individuals. We absolutely CAN blame the corporations, and also our government. As consumers it's not like we're replete with effective alternatives, because established interests have every reason to ensure there aren't any.

Audacity’s new owner is in another fight with the open source community

I very much disagree with the absolutism in AndyP's comment, but I will add that most artists aren't career artists. Only a very few can make a career of art. Most do hold full-time jobs to actually support themselves while they make art. The current system certainly isn't doing much to support...

Freenode IRC has been taken over by the crown prince of Korea

Seems he basically filed some kind of legal challenge or threat at tomaw (the individual the staff voted to be head of staff) to gain administrative rights and to gag him after the fact. At least one staffer who resigned indicated they investigated challenging Lee back but it would cost a lot...

The Rolls-Royce Ghost: A magic carpet ride that costs as much as a house

You first have to get past defining "fair" when it comes to taxation. That word can mean dramatically different things to different speakers. A lot of people would disagree with what I think is "fair" taxation.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets a post-launch epilepsy warning on PC

Reading the quoted tweet from Liana Ruppert has me hoping that this is the beginning of some very positive change. "I’ve had 4 major AAA studios reach out to me saying this article has caused them to re-evaluate their dev process and more inclusive regarding neurological accessibility." This...

Florida posted the password to a key disaster system on its website

Fruit of the Poisonous Tree, hopefully. I really hope a court looks closely at the search warrant and throws it right out. And any cooperating employees may need to lawyer up and be prepared to fight.

Here’s what we learned from that massive House antitrust report

I think a more appropriate way to frame it is that Apple has a majority share of mobile app commerce. The numbers and amounts of mobile app transactions going through Apple's App Store gives them vast power over app developers, if not necessarily directly over mobile users. So if you're a...

Baldur’s Gate 3 early access—mediocre RPG, amazing rendering engine

I would too, save that the Jim Salter goes on about how other RPGs often handle things differently. But we're talking about a D&D game, so I don't think there is any reason at all to expect that things would be done differently. There SHOULD be that dichotomy. I am having trouble figuring out...

As Epic attacks Apple and Google, it ignores the same problems on consoles

But maybe some are. And I don't know that $100/year does cover those costs. The point is, there is subsidizing of costs going on, and Apple is not, nor are they required to be, transparent about their costs. Further, that 30% cut is commensurate with other services and even with brick and mortar...

As Epic attacks Apple and Google, it ignores the same problems on consoles

When looking at whether 30% is "overcharging" for the services Apple provides, we know it is, because part of Apple's justification for their take is that they host lots of free apps that never pay Apple a cent (aside from the developer program fees, presumably). In that sense, the paid apps and...

As Epic attacks Apple and Google, it ignores the same problems on consoles

I understand that analogies can be very helpful, but I have yet to see one offered up that does this situation justice. I worry that the competing analogies might actually cloud this issue and make it more opaque.

As Epic attacks Apple and Google, it ignores the same problems on consoles

I don't know that that changes anything. According to what I've read, Nintendo buys ROM chips from a single source, and developers have already complained about the higher costs of the larger cartridges vs discs. Chinese knock-off cartridges are probably already demonstrating that lower costs...

As Epic attacks Apple and Google, it ignores the same problems on consoles

I believe this is still the case, at least for Nintendo and Sony. Your physical media must be produced by Sony or Nintendo. I'm not sure whether Microsoft has this same policy.

    Analogue Pocket’s FPGA-fueled features revealed: $200 pre-order on Aug. 3

If I may wax pedantic, none of the units in the Gameboy line (including Advance) have any FM Synthesis hardware or capabilities, other than some rudimentary software FM in Nanoloop. The Gameboy, rather, uses a combination of PSG (2 pulse waves), noise, and basic wavetable synth. The GBA adds a...

RPG remakes maintain the problematic racial representations of their pasts

Isn't it lovely you have the option of stepping away from these issues? Some folks LIVE these issues and cannot step away from them. Demanding that outlets never challenge your comfort is not a recipe for good journalism.

Shareholder groups say Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is overpaid

Do you have some materials I could read on this? This isn't an area I'm very knowledgeable and you make a point which, if true, deserves the eyball time.

iPhone SE review: Though it be but little, it is fierce

Power efficiency, for one. More recent and powerful CPUs have accommodations for lower-speed power-efficient operation. They also often include co-processors or components to offload certain functions from the main CPU.

TurboGrafx-16 Mini review: Mostly best-in-class retro gaming, sometimes WTF

The Genesis audio subsystem lacked a critical timer the TG16 had. The Genesis could play high quality digital samples, but the programmer had to kind of hold the system's hand while doing it. Trying to play quality samples while other audio was playing was rather difficult and hard to...

TurboGrafx-16 Mini review: Mostly best-in-class retro gaming, sometimes WTF

Honestly, answers to questions like this aren't always straight-forward. The TG16 could put more colors on-screen at a time, due to having a lot more color palettes available. The Genesis supported two layers of background tiles vs the TG-16's one. In terms of sprite handling, the Genesis could...

TurboGrafx-16 Mini review: Mostly best-in-class retro gaming, sometimes WTF

Well, the original hardware, especially in the PC Engine/TG-16's case, is falling apart. In addition to needing capacitor replacements, most older units also have CD drives that are in various stages of failing, either needed new laser units or custom plastic gears. And CDs? Most of the CD games...
