These newest vacuums from 2023 clean up well, and they’re on sale

Very happy to read this. I too am in the camp of Dyson disappointment and looking into Miele. I have a pet and only hardwood floors, my Dyson is constantly clogging, the air filter needs cleaning every use, which makes a big mess, and emptying the canister unleashes a plume of pet dander no...

Breaking: Sam Altman reportedly in talks for potential return as OpenAI CEO

Of course. And? If the board is in fact in talks to bring Altman back, it's because they made a decision that backfired calamitously and likely would result in their cashflow drying up with Msft taking the uncommitted portion of their $13B and walking. So while the board is in charge, they may...

Breaking: Sam Altman reportedly in talks for potential return as OpenAI CEO

Oh I agree. The different sides should have sat down together and either found a compromise to continue working together or collectively decide who should walk.

Breaking: Sam Altman reportedly in talks for potential return as OpenAI CEO

And if they did as you suggest, would they not be very cowardly to shrug off deep ethical and safety concerns due to others’ profit motives?

Breaking: Sam Altman reportedly in talks for potential return as OpenAI CEO

Bringing Altman back and losing Ilya in the process solves that? Seems like both the now-status quo and control-Z options are quite damaging.

Fall COVID shot uptake is an “abysmal” 7%; wastewater testing impaired

Stratified RCTs are the standard for robust evidence, and there’s no reason at all we wouldn’t have them for this vaccine. And without them it’s just not clear why I should. Observational studies are interesting, but even those are rarely stratified and ultimately not compelling. Per the WHO...

Apple’s China ties under Congressional scrutiny after Jon Stewart cancellation

Not sure what l was difficult for you to understand. I explicitly said that if Apple is fine doing this, then that’s their right and choice. However, if Apple is being coerced by a foreign government to suppress speech in the US as a condition of conducting business in the foreign country, then...

Apple’s China ties under Congressional scrutiny after Jon Stewart cancellation

Does the USG have any say when other countries’ governments violate our first amendment? Surely there is a legitimate legal question here about protecting domestic first amendment rights. Sure, Apple is subject to local laws when providing content to other countries, but I’m deeply uncomfortable...

Fall COVID shot uptake is an “abysmal” 7%; wastewater testing impaired

There literally is not data to support this claim. Certainly nothing approximating stratified efficacy and safety. Even flu vaccines have RCTs. All we have for Covid is Pfizer's word. It's no wonder why ~95% of people haven't gotten the new vaccine, and many countries are recommending it only...

Fall COVID shot uptake is an “abysmal” 7%; wastewater testing impaired

Turns out there aren't any RCTs. Certainly no data about my demographic. Big surprise.

Fall COVID shot uptake is an “abysmal” 7%; wastewater testing impaired

My doctor advised me not to get it. Anyone know where can I find the results of RCTs with safety and efficacy data for someone in my demographic, with my history of Covid, and my history of Covid vaccinations?

The world’s most expensive robovac is the $1,600 Dyson 360 Vis Nav

My experience is the opposite. After 1.5 years with the Dyson V11, it’s utterly useless. It’s so bad that I’m thinking about going back to a bagged canister vacuum like Miele.

Report describes Apple’s “organizational dysfunction” and “lack of ambition” in AI

You seem to be equating “first to market” with innovative. And I suspect not many would agree that is the right way to think about it. Apple invents things and also improves everything it touches. Both of these are innovative.

Signal vows to defy UK legislation that puts E2E encryption in the crosshairs

In principle I don’t understand how this can be justified without also arguing it would be just to monitor or access records of my hand written or verbal comms. The latter isn’t realistically feasible, but as a matter of consistent legal philosophy there isn’t much of a different because my...

It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop

But it’s fun to imagine scenarios in which idiot aliens discover their own lost, ancient technology for travel across the universe while not themselves having vast advanced technology otherwise. So they travel here, but then are rather unimpressive when they arrive. In a universe of infinite...

Twitter shuts offices for day as it cuts 50% of workforce; staff already suing

Sad but inevitable when employees are creating value. Twitter loses money 8 of the past 10 years. So increase revenue or cut costs. There is no other way about it, and there is no indication revenue growth is around the corner.

New Jersey politicians want to ban subscriptions for car hardware

Actually better than the words I would choose. It’s impressively broad while being simultaneously specific enough to draw the line at what we would intuitively feel are the set of things that shouldn’t require a subscription. And without seemingly having loopholes. It’s the words I would want...

Comcast wanted $210,000 for Internet—so this man helped expand a co-op fiber ISP

It is not correct that the same costs would be to Comcast (rather, would be incurred by). The primary costs are fixed costs, and Comcast would spread these over a much greater project scope than this one project, so a much smaller share would be attributed to his one project than the residents...

SpaceX says it can’t keep funding Starlink in Ukraine, asks Pentagon for money

Why stop at Ukraine? Why not use private businesses to help the defense of every country?
