Physicists discover new kind of tetraquark—the longest-lived yet found

No disrespect to the artist, but why are the two charm quarks different colors?

Delta and Gamma variants’ reign begins as Alpha drops from 70% to 35% of cases

I've been fully vaxed since late March, and am grateful to feel protected against these variants (so far). Now that mask restrictions have been relaxed, most people I see in my travels in the DFW area are unmasked. As it turns out, only ~60% are vaccinated, so I expect a surge of cases here...

Texans regret opting into power plan that remotely raises thermostat temps

Agreed. I've lived in the DFW metroplex for 25 years, and we have always set our thermostat at 82 in the summer to conserve, save money, etc. We run ceiling fans, dress lightly, and don't do jumping jacks. It takes a few days to acclimate, and we're fine. I know some folks are heat-intolerant...

Hospital suspends 178 health care workers for failing to get COVID vaccine

Texas is an at-will employment state, so good luck with that suit. Of all people, at all times, I would expect these folks to get the vax. Shame on them.

Virgin Galactic announces another human-tended science flight

Assuming for the sake of argument that the science is valuable, couldn't the sensor test be done on the vomit comet (albeit in 30s increments)? And the fluid experiment could hitch a ride to the space station and get far more than 4 minutes to muck with. Don't get me wrong, the craft is...

Vaccine FOMO is real. Here’s how to deal with it

Count me among them...I had to look it up, and I've been on the internet since its inception. However, I am thankfully only a very light user of social media, where such terms are used extensively. The acrimony of this chain confirms my desire to remain largely distant from social media.

Vaccine FOMO is real. Here’s how to deal with it

I received my second Pfizer jab two days ago. I did/do not feel the sense of unbridled joy some have reported, but I have experienced a notable reduction of my background COVID anxiety as I am already much less likely to contract COVID and/or pass it along to my immediate family. In two weeks I...

Boeing recommends grounding 777s with Pratt & Whitney engines

So, sorry if this has been asked...but what’s with the continuous fire in the engine? Is there not a fire suppression system, or at least ability to cut the fuel flow? Or is the fire burning off residual fuel after cutting off the flow? I’m certainly glad the engine bits went the right way...

It took a year, but Gwyneth Paltrow figured out how to exploit the pandemic

Wow, she was great in "Shakespeare in Love":..a warning not to fall in love with beauty.

NSF had a drone watching as Arecibo’s cables snapped

Who knew drone downwash was so strong?

Famed Arecibo observatory to be decommissioned in wake of cable breaks

All tools reach the end of their lives, and we will all mourn when Hubble goes dark as well. But if we can afford to spend $8B replacing Hubble with Webb, I suggest we can afford to replace Arecibo and create an endowment for another 50 years of operation.

SpaceX seeks to fly unproven rocket, put engine issue to rest

Right, time to start charging more for "proven" Falcon first stages!

White House informally endorses letting pandemic spread unchecked

Trump destroys everything he touches. We can't afford another four years of this kind of "leadership". For God's sake vote!

Ignore the critics--I think it's brilliant.

NASA’s Mars Perseverance launch date has slipped eight more days

So the delay certainly sucks, but this is what the wet dress rehearsal is for. My concern is whether the launch window is long enough to work through any more snafus they haven't hit yet. Perhaps the integration/test schedule should be a tad longer when the consequences of missing the window are...

Younger people not immune from severe COVID-19, new CDC guidance suggests

Maybe these conclusions are more data-based rather than anecdotal? Unfortunately there's a pretty large dataset of morbidity and death to work with now.
